Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Anybody know the over/under for the weekend series?:)

Word of caution: beware of people named "Friend."

Looking forward to seeing some of the Gopher fans at the HBHC today--think you will be pleased with our "new" look, Division I renovation.

The Strib ran pretty much the same recap as the Pioneer Press but at the end added this quote:

“It was a great team win tonight,” head coach Brad Frost said. “We outshot St. Cloud fairly heavily and applied some good pressure, really used our speed on the big ice and came away with the win. It was nice to see Kelsey Cline get her first goal as a Gopher.”

I think I'd a fallen outa my chair if anyone had told me that the Gopher hockey program would be undefeated in November. I predict that comes to an end with a men's loss at ND.

Good call.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

No mention of injuries, or illness, or suspension, or of anything at all and yet the box score only lists 15 skaters including one of the freshman D as a W.

Anyone know what's up?

Good call.
Speaking of...am I the only one who thinks the Irish helmets are ridiculous? Thought I was watching a Marvel Comics team in their superhero headgear or something. All they're missing is a pair of sparkly gold wings or something. I'd use another word to describe the helmet but it would probably offend certain members of the forum.

Reminded me of C-3PO.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

The Gophers played 23 good minutes today: the second period and the last three. In between they were sloppy and mistake prone. They didn't really deserve to win.

A lot of it goes to St. Cloud. They played hard, they played smart, and they played the kind of game it will take to beat Minnesota. Whoever ends this streak won't do it by sitting back trying to keep the score low and capitalize on a mistake to win 1-0 or 2-1. If you give this Gopher team time to make decisions they'll pick you apart.

The key to beating them is to be aggressive at all times. Forecheck hard, with multiple players, and pressure the Gopher defense into mistakes. Much like the Saturday game against Bemidji State there were times this afternoon when Minnesota looked completely lost and when things break down they did not cover well around the net. All three Husky goals came about by forcing the Gophers into a bad play and then finding the player that was inevitably left alone at the side of the goal.

It's going to take four goals to beat them not so much because the offense is good enough to win any game you don't but because if you don't play with that mindset you probably won't even score two. Relentless, non-stop pressure is what it will take to get it done.

I hope this week of practice is spent primarily on how to beat an aggressive forecheck.

They spent a lot of the end of the 2nd period skating to the penalty box, so I wouldn't say that was all good. Even though they got the kills, they lost the momentum that they'd built up earlier in the period.

I hope this week of practice is spent primarily on how to beat an aggressive forecheck.
I hope they can get a little healthier, or it won't matter much, because I don't think they can beat a deep UND team with this lineup. It is hard to have much cohesion when all three of the forward lines have somebody out of the lineup. I guess that the Davis line wasn't technically new, but they were new the week before. IMO, the strength of this team is the offensive balance when they have everyone, and that was gone this week. Kudos to Frosty and the staff for patching together two lines to score a couple of goals down the stretch from the spare parts he had available.

Beyond that I'll defer to you given you saw the game and I only heard/read it. :D

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Flug pretty much disappeared in the third period. I don't know whether it is another injury or just the coaches shuffling lines trying to find something that clicked. Overall, the lines in the third were completely different. Davis and Terry were together with a rotating cast on the other wing, though that might have been Terry double shifting. Megan Wolfe shifted from defense to take Flug's place on the Brandt line. When the Gophers went up with 1:09 left to go, they sent out McMillen/Ramsey/Brandt/Terry/Davis and if Terry hadn't taken a penalty with 13 seconds to go I don't think there was any intention to have another line change.

I thought that final forward line made a lot of sense but I wasn't as thrilled with the defense pairing. Ramsey showed both why she can be so valuable and also why she can be so frustrating today. I'd have felt more comfortable with Gillanders out there but it worked.

Great day for Gopher sports! Football team beats Penn State, men's hockey beats Notre Dame and our women's team comes out on top vs. a determined St. Cloud State team. I'm exhausted!!! (but in a good way) ;)

Late goals spark Gophers women to 61st win in a row

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

The Huskies...Huskies...Huskies!! pushed the Champs to the very brink on this day. Excellent play by senior defender Michelle Burke, lots of pressure (and a goal) from Machine Gun Molli Mott, and constant pressure with a good forecheck had the Gophs reeling a bit. But like great teams, they found a way to win. IMO, the Huskies' deserved the win--in reality, the better team won.

My guess--the Gophers will be a looser and better team once the pressure of the streak is over. I doubt that Minnie will still be undefeated come Jan. 24-25 when the Huskies visit Ridder. . .

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

This game was more nerve wracking than any that we have been to in awhile. I believe having so many players out was the main cause for the poor play by the Gophers. But then to come back and win after looking so tired and out of sync in the 3rd period was remarkable! Hats off to St Cloud though for their relentless forechecking. They never seemed to slow down. The remodeling of the arena was great and the easier access so us old folks with bad knees and backs didn't have to climb up that hill or those steps as in prior years. But blocking off the handicap parking area yesterday was not cool! One last thought. Did that official really call icing against the Gophers in the last few seconds of the game with St Cloud on a power play or did he raise his arm for some reason that I know nothing about? Weird.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Yeah, at the end of the game on Sat. the refs did goof up with that icing at the very end. I think that crew needs to review the icing rules considering they had two times in that game that they got it wrong in my opinion.

No foul, and fortunately no harm.

Brief highlights of the exciting, miracle finish at the HBNHC as aired on SportsCenter.

I agree with the speculations, or guesses taken by The Boomer despite the teams apparent appropriate perspective. No one wants / likes to lose. At some point one would have to entertain it becomes an unnecessary mental burden interfering with focusing on the game you're playing right now. Not a lot of evidence of that thus far though.

Very impressed with the Huskies on the weekend, both effort and game plan. Two solid 'tenders capable of winning games for SCSU. If the Huskies play like that every weekend they should be putting some in the win column.
