Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

The campus compares favorably to the Stalinist era apartment block I lived in for a few weeks in Warsaw, too, but that's a pretty low standard.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

That was . . . good enough. Barely. Bemidji played a hell of a game and the Gopher defense finally looked like I'd expected them to this season. Ramsey, Garzone, and Wolfe in particular struggled but the only blueliner to play well was Jordyn Burns. The Brandt/Bona/Menefee line was solid. Other than that it was sloppy, to be generous. Kelly Terry's goal at the end of the first was very pretty, getting around the defender and being very patient with the puck until she could slip a backhand in.

GWH -- Congrats on the consistent excellance!

Saw this story...hurt a bit, but it says you value books over looks... http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/americas-ugliest-college-campuses.
I am not a UofM graduate, I really don't have a dog in this fight.

Coffman is pretty ugly from the river side but the perspective from the mall looking down from Northrup is pretty standard college campus mall and is actually quite attractive when at its best. If you go around and look at Coffman from the river side it is, as has been noted, at best utilitarian, at worst, ugly. My perspective is that the buildings near in to the mall from Coffman to Northrup and in a circle around Northrup over towards the Armory and I think it is Pillsbury and then from Northrup over towards the river (the old campus as I view it) are nice enough old buildings, mostly brick, none particularly striking, but mostly attractive enough.

The West Bank? I hope they were going for utility over there because attractive it is not.

Is it leafy and gorgeous like the exurban small town campuses of the east or the west? Well, if you have 60,000 students you really shouldn't be expecting a small town atmosphere. It is a big school in a medium large metropolitan area.

The thing that I find most attractive about the campus is that it supports a really good women's hockey team and in the end that's all I really care about.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Well I AM a UofM graduate, and I take offense at the suggestion that the campus isn't "leafy". I always considered the campus extremely leafy.
Or possibly it was my brain that was leafy during the time I was there.....

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

In only 8 games, 7 of the 9 forwards now have multiple goal games
All three lines have at least 2 players with multiple goal games
That’s what I call balanced scoring

I only listened to the game as I watched the Bulldog-Mav game, it sounded to me like the Beavers put up a good fight Saturday

Gopher women and mens' teams are each ranked No. 1 in the USCHO and USA Today polls, and in addition each is now capturing 100% of the vote. I know, these "human polls" don't mean much, if anything - particularly at this stage of the season - but I was wondering if this might be a first since the women's game was recognized as a NCAA sport. If it's not an all-time first, it has to be an extremely rare and fleeting event.

I would think that Wisconsin got 100% of the first place votes in the final poll the year the Badgers won the NCAA for both men and women (2006).

Just a quick note on a Gopher recruit. Kelly Pannek of BSM was named Ms. Soccer for this season. As captain, she will lead the Red Knights into the State Championship game against Blake on Thursday as the Knights try to defend their title.

I would think that Wisconsin got 100% of the first place votes in the final poll the year the Badgers won the NCAA for both men and women (2006).

It appears that both the Badger women and men were ranked 2nd in the last USCHO poll in the spring of 2006:
http://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-womens-poll/2005-2006/poll,0313/march-13,-2006/
http://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-mens-poll/2005-2006/poll,0320/march-20,-2006/

Then in the first USCHO polls of 2006-07 they were both ranked No. 1 but neither were unanimous:
http://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-womens-poll/2006-2007/poll,0918/september-18,-2006/
http://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-mens-poll/2006-2007/poll,0925/september-25,-2006/

So unless someone can cite another instance I'll go out on a limb and proclaim that the current Gopher teams are the first to accomplish being the unanimous No. 1 picks in both polls at the same time. :)

The problem is finding a unanimous No. 1 on the men's side, something that doesn't happen all that often. For example, the Minnesota men couldn't get those last pesky votes back in November of 2004:

November 29, 2004
Team (First Place Votes) Record Points Last Poll
1 Minnesota (36) 10-3-0 596 3
2 Boston College (2) 6-2-2 527 4
3 Colorado College (2) 10-2-0 512 5
4 Wisconsin 10-4-0 503 2
...

The women were no problem that year, as I think they were unanimous picks every week, including Nov. 29:
November 29, 2004
Team (First Place Votes) Record Points Last Poll
1 Minnesota (15) 13-0-1 150 1
2 Dartmouth 9-0-0 133 2
3 Minnesota-Duluth 9-1-2 115 3
4 Wisconsin 11-3-0 110 5
...
Still, my guess is that there is another case out there, but I'm not going to spend any more time hunting for it right now. I know that there would be in the other poll, because they do have a season-ending poll every season.

I stand corrected; there were some dreamers :p voting for Dartmouth at one point:
December 13, 2004
Team (First Place Votes) Record Points Last Poll
1 Minnesota (12) 15-1-2 147 1
2 Dartmouth (3) 11-1-0 137 2
3 Minnesota-Duluth 13-1-2 119 3
4 Wisconsin 13-4-1 106 4
...

If I have this wrong than I apologize, but I believe you are the spelling, grammar, and word usage nazi so it seems only fair to point out that you must have missed the fact that the first part of your post was mentioned a few pages back. Easy enough to do for sure, but for someone that is such a stickler for details this is indeed surprising.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Ms. Hockey candidate selections may be a ways off...but I'm compelled to inquire, has there ever been a Ms. Soccer on the GWH roster before?

There will be. ;)

:o

I apologize. I admit I don't follow this thread as closely as I should yet I can't imagine how I missed the previous notice, even though it was less than detailed. ;)
