Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

And fresh off of Twitter and Facebook... The Gopher women's hockey team will be honored at this Saturday's Gopher football game.

It's highly probably they'll be receiving their NCAA Championship rings. Looking forward to it.

I would hope the school would give them their rings at the rink and not at a football game.

last year they did it at a football game as well, if at a rink, few would be able to attend, and they'd have to wait
besides, with the crappy U of MN football teams, it gives people something to cheer about

on another note:

some Gopher fans may be looking forward to the record of consecutive games won being extended
yeah, that is a cool record and one to be proud of
but it is not required to win every game to win a national championship (which is the goal I assume every team really wants)
as long as you win enough games to get to the NCAA playoffs, you only need to win the last 3 (or 4 if you need that conference championship to get to the NCAAA's) to win the championship

in reading about Sarah Erickson's appointment at Concordia it mentioned she was #2 for games played by a GWH, at 158
naturally, I was curious who is #1
it is Anne Schleper, at 159
now, you may not be excited about that record,
probably not as exciting as shutouts by a goalie, goals & points by a defender
but if Bethany Brausen & Baylee Gillanders don't miss a game this year
neither have missed a game in playing 3 years
they would break the record if the Gophers appear in the NCAA tournament
(something to look forward to)

Congrats yet again to the Gopher Women's Hockey team in receiving their 2013 NCAA championship rings today at TCF Bank Stadium during the Gopher football game. It was amazing! Their was a big buzz in the stadium the minute the hockey team was introduced. The applause continued throughout the ceremony! Gopher fans definitely are aware of the women's hockey team incredible accomplishments!!!

 Wish I could have been there...maybe a few of those appreciative fans will show up at Ridder in a few weeks.

Overall, I'm very glad for the recognition, I'm very glad for the fantastic crowd reaction, I'm very glad the gals got their championship rings, but I thought the athletic department could have done better. The team had already received their rings rather than having them handed out on the field, and the presentation felt rushed -- they had to split a TV timeout with some advertisement, and there was no time to even have the Rouser (the school song) played. Am I asking for too much?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

If you haven't seen it there was a nice mention of GWH captains practice, and in particular how Bethany Brausen runs it, by Mike Russo in writing about the first day of training for the Minnesota Wild which happened to be at Ridder areana due to a scheduling conflict. (Here's the quote from Russo's Rant from 9-12)

"Good late afternoon from the Ridder press box, where I got to watch Bethany Brausen run the captain’s practice for the national champion Gophers’ women. First time I’ve ever gotten to watch a captain’s practice after hearing about them for years and she does a fabulous job. She sure organizes drills impressively like she’s a coach herself."

sports writers crack me up

what do you suppose she's been doing between games the past 15 years Mike?
what do sports writer do between games?

now that the question of who the captains will be has been answered, it will be interesting to see who is between the pipes for the exhibition games, and then Colgate. Not much time before the Wisconsin series, which will almost make it baptism by fire.

And what the lines will be, will Bona & Terry, Brandt & Menefee stay together, or will there be something new?

Prior to the arrival of Noora, it seemed to be Frost's preference to play two goaltenders. Even once #41 arrived, he showed an inclination to include Grogan in the mix until she got hurt. So my guess is that we'll see two different goalies start versus Colgate. Whether that means all three goalies will see action in the exhibitions or only those two will likely be determined by how they look in practice.

Will we stay with Brandt, Terry, and Davis as our three top centers? My guess is "yes" early, but the long-term goal may be to play someone like Cameranesi at center, so it could change. I'll guess that Cameranesi starts out on the Brandt line with Menefee, Lorence moves up to take Kortum's spot, and either Schipper or Garzone joins Brausen on the Davis line. If the staff views somebody like a Flug or Wolfe as having a greater offensive upside, then she could be on Terry's line instead with the Brausen/Davis/Lorence combo remaining intact.

We are in pretty good shape up front, only losing two of the top 10. Even on the power play, seven of 10 are back (or it could be viewed as 6 1/2 as Kortum and Bona split time.) I'd expect that Haley will be added into the rotation on the PP at some point, and Gillanders will likely get a shot, although she hasn't played much PP to this point. There are plenty of forward options on the power play, but the question would be who of those would the coaches trust to play back on the blue line? Probably Davis or Brandt, but they figure to QB the two PP units at first. So it seems like we'd have the returning PP units from last season at first with replacements for Kessel, Bozek, and Jalosuo.

A lot of PK experience back with Davis, Terry, Brandt, and Brausen. Bona and Garzone have done a little and figure to get more, and the rookies will be mixed in. Again, the D will be the greater concern, so it is important that McMillen cuts down on her penalty minutes. We could see somebody like Davis sliding back on the PK if the blue line proves to be thin when shorthanded.

??? interesting response. Anywho, I thought it was nice that the Gopher women's team got a mention in the Pro teams blog. Evidently, my mistake.

well it IS nice, I guess I just thought it was funny that he's never seen a captains practice
OK, I admit it, I find most sports writers kind of... better left unsaid.

Prior to the arrival of Noora, it seemed to be Frost's preference to play two goaltenders. Even once #41 arrived, he showed an inclination to include Grogan in the mix until she got hurt. That was my thinking with the goalie situation as well.

I find it kind of humorous that all the chatter here has been about what will the Gophers do without #8. Certainly the coaches, players, and fans will miss her being in a Gopher uniform this year. But I thought the bigger question would be who will replace Noora, especially with the loss of half the blueline.

As far as the lines go, let’s keep in mind that the only line that stayed intact last year from start to finish was the Kessel-Brandt-Menefee line (with occasional substitutions). It’s kind of interesting how the other two lines evolved over the year with the final configuration not taking place until the series with Mankato in January.
Every forward on these two lines flipped from one side to the other and from one line to the other. Kortum went from center to forward. Terry went from forward to center, and on different lines, they didn't just trade places. The final result was nice, but it took some time to get there. You never know where they might start and end up this year until the games are played and the results in.

I'm a little surprised that at No. 2 Wisconsin was picked ahead of North Dakota in the pre-season poll.
I was surprised Tapani doesn't garner a whisper in pre-season rookie picks.

Sounds like a great opportunity to bring in some top prospects for a visit ;)
