I wouldn't blame them. I count five Gophers on the roster. We're not so desperate that we have to claim people clearly having an allegiance to another program.
Yeah...I don't know why they wouldn't more accurately specify former Whioux...or whatever. Former Gopher to me is a player that spent their college hockey career with Minnesota.

I'll include anyone that finished as a Gopher, such as Winny Brodt, Courtney Kennedy, Rachael Drazan, or Chelsey Jones. It's not how you start, it's how you finish. :)

I then take it that your definition would also include Darwitz and Wendell, even though they didn't come back and complete their remaining college eligibility as Gophers. But although they didn't FINISH their playing days as Gophers, Minnesota was the last college team they played for.

Yes. Anyone like Ashley Stenerson is a Gopher in my eyes, because the Minnesota jersey is the last college jersey that she wore. But I'd count Renee Curtin as a Gopher before I'd count the Lams.

Really, really wonderful crowd, 2,276. The girls teams in the entry end of the arena tried several times in the third period to get the wave started. There were plenty of people in every section all the way around but the band never really committed. If you can't get the band you can't get the wave.

The new wall of champions down by the second concession stand is a major improvement in arena ambiance. In the end it is just some new trophy cases with excellent pictures mural blasted on the wall between and around the trophies but it creates a nice bit of a place of history. Very nice to look at the trophy and find a nearby photo of the trophy being presented to exuberant Gophers. It probably goes without saying that having lots of trophies MAKES the display. Thumbs up.

The game? Way too many penalties, I think probably both coaches are going to sign off on that opinion. I thought Spivey called most of them, maybe he is trying to get back lost time after that shoulder injury in Duluth when the Gophers were up there early on in the fall.

The Bucks had the first really excellent chance of the game but Leveille came up huge for the Gophers. Shortly after that Brandt got the first of her three. I thought OSU played quite a bit better than their record but I never ever thought after that first chance that they were mounting a serious threat. The Gophers had too many, too good.

I have two really, really fine teddy bears wearing "M" sweaters for the game tomorrow. I am hoping that we chuck them onto the ice during the first shift played by Sarah Davis. It would be great if she scores the teddy bear goal but I (and I believe Sarah) will not be the slightest bit disappointed if she just sets it up.

Before I get into this quote, I just want to add that I fully concur with the comments that preceded it.

And for anyone asking, I do not always know -- nor do I have any control of -- when the band will be at the game and when they won't. :o Like everyone else, I'm just happy when they are in attendance. :D

Okay, now for the quote I pulled out of MBTC's comments. In some ways, this game was very reminiscent of the December 8th game in Columbus with the number of penalty calls. I mentioned earlier (in the OSU-MN thread) that I didn't want to see another game like that, but there's not much difference between tonight's 16 combined trips to the sin bin and 19 (as occurred on 12/8). It felt like, in that respect, the Gophers were playing OSU's game.

But in many other ways, tonight's game was a lot different -- particularly in the fact that the Gophers put up a nice crooked number in the first period, plus some of the penalties were not as blatant. Additionally, playing in front of the Ridder Arena crowd (rather that at OSU Ice Rink) is a major change in atmosphere.

I have more comments, but I'm going to post them into the weekend thread.

The Bucks had the first really excellent chance of the game but Leveille came up huge for the Gophers. Shortly after that Brandt got the first of her three.

I thought Leveille really deserved one of the three stars of the game. Yes, she could have played mediocre, and given the way the game played out the Gophers still would have outscored the Buckeyes. But Amanda made 28 saves on 28 OSU shots, and even on the close-in ones she didn't give them much to shoot at...what more can you ask of your goaltender? Every time the Gophers scored, while Leveille continued to keep the Buckeyes off the scoreboard, you could see from their body language the effect it was having on their will to keep battling. Anyway, I thought the whole team played very well overall, especially considering they were coming off a 5 week break (which was too long, IMO!).

Hoping for a repeat tomorrow...Gophers are looking good! :)

(Other than 'delay of game') what the heck is "Teddy Bear Toss"?

But I'd count Renee Curtin as a Gopher before I'd count the Lams.
They are Babe Ruths of women's hockey in respect to UND/UM and NYY/BOS relations and their statistics. So, I'd feel the same way. But I'm not too worked up if they are listed as former gophers or former Sioux. I DID, with my own eyes, watch the Lams in UM jerseys dominate the Sioux along with their teammates. Can't erase history unfortunately :(

A way to donate stuffed animals to a children's charity -- I believe that those tonight were going to Toys For Tots -- why having the additional fun of tossing said stuffed animals onto the ice surface. It's extremely popular with the fans of the Calgary Hitmen minor-league professional team, and this is the second season the Gophers have held one.

A slight glitch tonight, as a potential Gopher goal was waved off because of an early whistle. The goal light went on, the goal horn sounded, and teddy bears started hitting the ice. But a lot were held onto until the first goal that counted.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Very unfortunate for the Gophers to give up that home run pass and breakaway goal that tied the game with less than 2 minutes to go. After battling back in the 3rd period to go up 2-1, there was no need for both D to try to hold the offensive zone zone and let Tarr get behind them. Hopefully lesson learned.

On a lighter note, who was that Crazy guy trying to play the cymbals in the 3rd period? ;)

I'd like to emphasize that it wasn't really an early whistle. I thought Steffes pretty clearly had it covered. I'm not sure how it ended up in the net but I think it was the right call.

I can understand the ref whistling that play dead - Steffes stayed still and puck wasn't easily seen, except to Brandt.

Are the womens games usually streamed live on Gophers All-Access? I'm thinking of paying the $10 to watch the Men's game tonight @ PSU, and getting to watch a couple more games would certainly make it more worthwhile.

Yes, they are.

She did not. However, from the angle the referee was at, he couldn't see it, and assumed she had it, rather than it being behind her as it was. Can't really fault him on that, because he can only go by what he sees. The play just before that where a Buckeye forward blocked a shot and the whistle blew thinking the goaltender had it was more of an error by the official.

Yesterday's game was completely awkward for me so, yes Eeyore, the result of the game was my fault. :o

I spent two periods stuck in the Zamboni tunnel because the Gophers couldn't get on the scoreboard, and then the minute I did finally get to my usual spot on the bench, the drumline guys called me down to play with them because they didn't have anyone who really knew the cymbal part(s).

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

On a different note, there was a comment in the OSU-MN thread that the Gophers could have gained ground on Wisconsin. I'll contend that they did, because they got a point for the tie. With UND and UW still having to play this afternoon, Minnesota has a 4-point lead on UW with a game-in-hand and a 10-point lead on UND though they have a game-in-hand. Here's the scenarios following today's game...

UW win today: UW 1 point back but MN has 2 games-in-hand, and UND 10 points back with equal games
UND win today: UW 4 points back but MN has 2 games-in-hand, and UND 7 points back with equal games

I'm really wishing for a tie today, with no preference as to who wins the shootout.
