Another series that before the season began a split would have seemed like a good result.

Indeed. Now let's make sure we come home with 6 points!

P.S. Congrats to Bethany Brausen on her first goal of the season, which got the Gophers rolling. And congrats also to Maryanne Menefee, whose two huge goals pretty much put the game away.

I think there's going to be a few bumps and bruises after this one. Hopefully nothing worse and a full roster for the rematch.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

The Menefee power play goal on passes from Kessel and Brandt was as pretty a tic-tac-toe passing play as anything ever produced by Tinkers to Evers to Chance.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I believe it's the first time in the program's history where the team has opened the season with a 12-0 record. Unbelievable start!

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

A fresh hot cup of Joe, my Sunday St. Paul Pioneer Press and the story headline "Gophers Women Put Broom to UMD." It's a fine day yessir.

Despite the numbers though...I didn't think the team played very well in their own end for stretches on Saturday night. That without Noora it could have been a very different game.

Six points...no complaints. Myself...I kinda wish a few would get some rest in lieu of 4 Nations Cup...probably not a consideration for the competitive athlete I s'pose.

I hate the comparison game, but for folks who have seen this team in person are there any past Gopher teams it reminds you of?
It is most like last year's team, of course, because many of the people are the same. Looking back farther, there are elements similar to other teams. The personnel on the top power play reminds me a bit of the 2004-05 PP unit that had Darwitz running it. However, this team is more complete with its strength in net, size and mobility on the blue line, and more scoring potential through the forward lines. That team managed to win everything that mattered, and it remains to be see what this year's UM team can accomplish, but I do think that the current edition has more ways to be successful than any past Gophers team.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I agree that it is a lot like last year's team. Beyond just the returning players, Brandt and Menefee bring some very similar things to the top line that Schoullis and Erickson did. They aren't terribly fast but they bring a lot of physical presence. These two young women are, particularly for freshmen, really strong. Last Saturday in Duluth Menefee just shrugged off a defender in order to get a breakaway. Brandt has that quality that Schoullis had that you just aren't going to prevent her from getting somewhere she really wants to go.

That (2005) team managed to win everything that mattered, and it remains to be see what this year's UM team can accomplish, but I do think that the current edition has more ways to be successful than any past Gophers team.

That is a scary suggestion for the rest of the field, considering they are defending champs and currently firing on all cylinders.

I should also emphasize the extent to which the defensive corps is playing at an unreal level. Bozek is Bozek and I'm not sure what else there is to say. Gillanders and especially Jalosuo have made enormous strides in the last two years; both are not only solid in their own end but have developed their offense, too. Ramsey has made the strides tightening up her defense that I was hoping she would. McMillen is a huge scoring threat though her defense, much like Ramsey's last year, still needs some work. I haven't gotten a really good feel for Lee Stecklein yet but there are many worse things for a defenseman than being largely unnoticed by fans.

Eyeore, very "observant observations"! ;)

But, I will quible just a little. IMHO, Steicklein has not been particularly "flashy" at this point, but the imprtant thing is that as a freshman D she's made steady progress and is rapidly becoming the solid, defensive-oriented D that Frost knew she would be when she was being recruited.

Kudos to all of the other D also; the goal scorers may get the headlines, but those of us who follow the team closely really do appreciate all of what you do.
