Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Sweep it is D2D! A great weekend...I'm relieved and pretty impressed too. Now hoping it was only a game misconduct for #8.

Brooky, I assume mean only a misconduct and NOT a game misconduct?

I'm hoping it doesn't turn out to be a game DQ. She was tossed from the game. Indications are no game DQ but...

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

As listed in the box score, Kessel's penalty was only a game misconduct, not a game DQ, so she'll be eligible to play next Friday unless supplemental discipline is issued. Having not seen the video, I have no idea if it's even warranted or not. But procedurally, given that this occurred on the road in a non-conference game, I'm not sure what governing body would even hand out such a decision -- does anyone have insight on this?

Not certain on this, but it would make sense that even though the infraction occurred in a non-conference game, NCAA rules do still apply - including those dealing with game misconducts and game disqualification penalties. So if Kessel's infraction does in fact turn out to be a game DQ, I would assume she would not be permitted to play in the next NCAA game. Again, not 100% on this. But based on the box score, and assuming it's accurate and not changed, it would appear that #8 will be eligible to play his coming Friday.

P.S. I did not see the video either, but to receive a game DQ for grabbing the facemask seems a bit harsh to me...UNLESS it's truly violent resulting in the opponent being thrown down and/or severely twisting her neck. Although it's apples and oranges, it's interesting to compare: in football a facemask penalty is "only" 15 yards, and only 5 yards if it's of a momentary/inadvertent nature. Either way, the offending player does not have to leave the game, and it does not affect his eligibility to play in the next game. Again, I did not see the video, and I'm not sure if there are "degrees" of this infraction and how much leeway the referee has in terms of what to call. I guess we'll find out shortly.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

No, according to the available box score it was called a GAME misconduct ( http://www.collegehockeystats.net/1213/boxes/wminstl1.o13 ) and the question is, could/will it be changed to a Game DQ?
Now we're getting into technical semantics. The box score won't change -- it will still remain listed as a misconduct penalty because that's what was called on the ice. But there is a possibility that some governing body (and this was my question -- which governing body would it be? WCHA? NCAA?) could issue supplemental discipline (i.e. a suspension).

I know that it happened last February -- Ohio State's Ally Tarr received a game misconduct for a hit on Emily West in the first game of series in Columbus, but played in the second game -- but, upon review, the WCHA suspended Tarr one game for the next weekend. Per the press release...
Tarr's suspension was determined after a review of the incident under the WCHA's Supplementary Discipline Policy and Procedures and was upheld by the league's Executive Committee following an appeal by OSU.

My only question is whether or not the WCHA has the authority to review such a play in a non-conference game in which the member team was the visitor. And if they don't, does any other body have such authority?

My guess is that the WCHA does have authority over its players/coaches at any time. At NCAA tournament time, I'd expect that somebody representing the NCAA is always on site so that a review can be expedited, similar to when Joe Torre was at the St. Louis at Atlanta one-game playoff representing MLB and could handle the Atlanta protest regarding the infield fly rule immediately. So if the Kessel play in question happened in an NCAA semifinal, the review could be expedited and a decision reached on whether or not she was eligible to play in the final.

I don't know the answer to your question beyond that. It doesn't make sense that the ECAC Hockey league officials have the authority to suspend Kessel after the fact for upcoming WCHA action. Now whether that falls to the WCHA or if someone is always home at the NCAA, I'll try to get an answer at some point.

It doesn't mean anything...just my own selfish wishful thinking.

Thought St. Lawrence was ranked when they played?
No, SLU came into the season ranked, but essentially swapped places with Clarkson after the Golden Knights swept the Saints.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

With all due respect to whomever it is picking the three stars of the game and with apologies to Hannah Brandt who certainly, certainly had the stats tonight and who certainly played like the number 1 star, for huge portions of the game, particularly in the second period when the outcome of the game was definitively sealed, Amanda Kessel was the by far dominant player.

There were lots and lots of pretty plays in the game including at least one by Ohio State (I am thinking the second goal) but the first two goals of the second period were both outstanding works of art.

On the first Ramsey made a couple of great plays and got the reward. She corralled the puck in the defensive zone and made the breakout pass to Kessel lurking along the right wing boards. Good enough play already but she saw the open ice ahead and skated hard to get herself into it. Kessel saw her the whole way, held the puck down the right wing side until Ramsey's hustle put her in alone behind the Buckeye defense, then Kessel feathered the perfect pass for a picture pretty goal by Ramsey.

The second goal featured one of those classic no one had to shoot the puck power play goals, the Gophers just passed it around until Kessel emerging from the left wing corner made the final pass across the crease to a couldn't have been more alone McMillen who only had to make sure the puck hit her stick as she made the final pass, the one into the back of the net for another one so pretty that everyone wants a picture of it goal.

Brandt deserves number 1 star, so does Kessel.
