Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

To be honest I was a little disappointed in the Gophers' play for a good portion of the 1st period. The passing wasn't sharp ...
They've been practicing for a week. Usually they are only playing a scrimmage at this point. I was actually impressed. Noora was sharp. I thought Brausen looked good, and Mira was playing with confidence. I've seen so much worse over the years on opening night.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

It was nice to see Becky Kortum come out of the gate flying. And I wouldn't say that I had doubts about Ramsey, just that she was someone who I thought could show dramatic improvement this year.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Not sure, but last year, Cornell's Jillian Saulner got 4 in her first, which also happened to be against Colgate.
Brandt hasn't managed 4 goals yet, but she does have a hat trick after one period of her second game.

:D That's not too shabby. It looks like she has Saulnier beat. Saulnier only managed 1 goal and 3 assists in her second game.

Maybe not; they changed the scoring on the first goal, so Brandt only wound up with two goals and four assists.

Too bad WCHA Offensive POTW and Rookie of the Week have to be two different players. :p ;)

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Moving on then, here is some idle speculation on top 9 forwards for next weekend:

Davis, Terry, Kortum, Brandt, Kessel, Lorence, Menefee, Brausen, Bona.

Brandt and Kortum both played center this weekend, Davis and Terry ended last season both playing center.

Here's a guess just for fun:

Kortum, Lorence, Brausen. They played together this weekend.
Brandt, Menefee, Bona. They played together this weekend.
Davis, Terry, Kessel. The 8-9-10 line. We saw it a little bit last season.

My guess for who will dress as the fourth line (and probably see significant playing time): Downey, Burns, Garzone. Again, they played together this weekend.

These are guesses for recreational purposes only, please NO WAGERING.

Nah, Brandt Offensive Player of the Week and Menefee Rookie of the Week. Heck, throw Bozek in there and make it a clean sweep.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I'll throw the hanging curve ball with some thoughts out of left field (seasonal clearance sale on MLB references).

With the addition of Terry and Davis and associated experimentation:

Kessel, Brandt, Bona
Davis, Terry, Brausen
Lorence, Kortum, Menefee
Burns, Downey or Frischmann, Garzone

I would seriously like to see BB get a look with Davis and Terry. She has the jets to play with #10 I believe.

Liked the D pairings as they were. #2 and #13 look like great additions to me. Keep #19 on the ice as much as humanly possible.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

I like yours too, brooky. And I agree about Brausen's speed.

OK then, how about the next step:

First PP unit: Davis, Kessel, Brandt, Bozek, Ramsey.

First PK: Bozek, Gillanders, Kortum, Brausen.

Again, NO WAGERING.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Brandt and Kortum both played center this weekend, Davis and Terry ended last season both playing center.
I don't remember Davis playing anything other than center since she's been a Goph, so I think that she is a given. I think Brandt is a natural at center as well.

Davis, Terry, Kessel. The 8-9-10 line. We saw it a little bit last season.
I don't remember it last year, but we saw it a bit when all three where rookies. Kessel was with Schoullis almost all last year, except for the weekend in Mankato, and by then Terry was centering the 3rd line.

I would seriously like to see BB get a look with Davis and Terry. She has the jets to play with #10 I believe.
Once Terry moved to center, Brausen was one of her wings almost all of the time. The other wing seemed to be rotated more often, with Lorence, Kortum, and Anderson all being there at various times.

First PP unit: Davis, Kessel, Brandt, Bozek, Ramsey.
I wouldn't be surprised if what we saw this weekend is the first PP unit, with Bozek, Kessel, Brandt, McMillen and then somebody from the set of (Bona, Kortum, and Menefee). If Kessel and Brandt start together, it may be the other wing on their line. I look for Davis to anchor the second PP unit like Kessel does the first, and they had Ramsey running the second unit from out top like Bozek does on the first. Mira looked good on the PP and everywhere else, I thought. Hopefully, that continues when the competition ratchets up.

Davis is so strong on the face-off, it seems like she NEVER loses the draw.

I think that is a major factor in why she is given at center. I also think because of her strength at winning the face-off that she is a natural on the first PP unit.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

As could we all.

Any truth that a top player out for season with injury? Did not want to mention player in case it is a baseless rumor. Heard about in a Dinkytown watering hole.

Not unless something happened last weekend. The only players that didn't play last weekend were both in Canada for camp.

The injury in question is on the men's side (freshman Connor Reilly is out for the year with a knee injury), not the women's team.
