Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

There was mention of Sam Downey's condition during the broadcast today. Sounds like 4-5 weeks recovery from a "lower body injury."

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

The player who most impressed me today was Becky Kortum. Fifteen seconds into the game she made a nice feed to Kelly Terry that almost resulted in a goal. She scored the first goal on a beautiful play. She later got an assist on another great pass to Terry. And she was all over the ice disrupting Wisconsin plays.

Her teammates agreed... She got the hardhat for hardest worker on the ice (though Kelly Terry got in a photobomb). pic.twitter.com/XOKLt6zm

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

From the BTN schedule for Sat. 2/2/13:

3:30 PM: Big Ten Women's Ice Hockey: Minnesota Duluth at Minnesota

Minnesota Duluth at Minnesota

I believe the start is 2:30 PM local on Sat. afternoon...and did I read a change to 6:00 PM on Friday?

Even the Newspapers are picking up on it :D:D
The Daily is the student newspaper at the U., so they had better pick up on it. But from the two large metro rags, the Star Tribune only had the obligatory "from News Services" recap of yesterday's game on their web site, and I don't think the Pioneer Press had anything.

There was an equivalent to the Strib recap in the print version of the Pioneer Press. Couldn't find a thing in the online edition.

Re: Star Tribune, what I don't understand is that they will often devote a large chunk of the first page of the sports section to the (mediocre) Gopher's women's basketball team, but more often than not they'll make you page back and really have to look in order to find the short recap of the (undefeated) women's hockey team. Yes, it's been better lately, but up until this point the disparity has made me wonder why they call Minnesota "The State of Hockey".

It's the same chicken-and-the-egg scenario that has been discussed before. Newspaper will give a team less coverage because of its smaller (perceived) fan base, and fan base won't grow because of lack of attention, leaving hardcore supporters frustrated.

Huh? I just bought our skate with the Gopher tickets. I bought the 3pm time slot because we're going to the Gopher women's game at 4:05.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

Always go by the Gophersports schedule when determining what time to show up:

Code:
02/02/13	vs. Minnesota Duluth * Ridder Arena	2:30 p.m. CT
This was changed a few weeks ago for BTN.

Congrats to the Gophers on their record-breaking season! Quite the accomplishment. Seriously, you DON'T have to take the SCSU Huskies seriously at all Feb. 22-23. If I were Frost, this would be a good time to rest all the exceptional talent for the playoffs the following week.

Unfortunately, that would probably just limit the margin of the score. Look forward to see some of my winning friends at the Concrete Center in February.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey 2012-2013

We arrived home from Madison late last night due to an impromptu stop at the "Bubba" Ho-Chunk casino in Black River Falls. The discussion among a few Gopher fans at the Best Western breakfast table was threefold. 1. How great the Gophers played, especially the entire team defensively. 2. We all liked the new arena, and as a certain bright young lady and her mother pointed out, it was nicer than either Mankato's or St Cloud's! 3. The Wisconsin State Journal had large Sports front page articles about both games with a large color photo of Becky Kortum, Decker and Rigbsy in Saturdays paper. The headlines for the two games were: "Record crosses over border" and "Gophers continue rampage". Of course, the topic of the usual poor coverage of Gopher women's hockey by the Twin City rags was then tossed around over the waffles. It was a great weekend for hockey to paraphrase Badger Bob. The only glitch was Friday night after the game when we went to The Texas Road House for dinner and were told it would be at least a half hour wait before we could be seated. So we left and had not so hot Mexican food at Laredos. We found out from our Road House waitress on Sunday night that our favorite hockey team had been in attendance on Friday. They deserved a great meal after that game! Except for a five minute or so stretch at the start of the third period on Sunday, when they had a little trouble getting the puck out of their zone, I thought the Gophers played as well as we've seen all year. Final thoughts; Although there were a couple of rabid Badger fans sitting behind us on Friday, who expressed their displeasure at the too few penalties called against the Gophers (they may have been satisfied with fifty), overall the Wisconsin fans and officials were extremely nice to us. A lady seated in front of us at the end of Sundays game, turned, and said she hoped we had a safe drive home because she heard the roads might be slippery. It was good to see Wisconsin promoting their team with sports cards. Really miss that from the Gophers! Next year, a trip to Ohio State will complete our WCHA road tours!

Thank you for coming down to Madison to support the Gopher women!

The way the WCHA standings are shaping up, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Huskies, Huskies, Huskies on back-to-back weekends.

And I mean "see" only figurative in my case. I unfortunately will not make it to the Concrete Center... I'm taking some vacation time from work to go see family in Michigan.
