Re: Minnesota Golden Gopher Season 2018-19: The Motzko Era Begins!
I can't recall a season where the Gophers traveled to Mich for ex. play against U18. Apparently the Gopher staff struck a deal where the Gophers travel for one game and U18 travels the next 4X to Mariucci. Exhibition game vs Gophers today is the first home game for U18 this season, who have now beaten 3 USHL teams, Notre Dame, and Michigan with one loss to Ferris State all on the road.
Starting goalie for Mich. Hayden Lavigne gave up 5 Gs in the first 22 min. before Pearson pulled him as U18 outplayed Mich. 6-3 last night. U18 is getting good goaltending from Spencer Knight (BC commit) and consistent scoring from a couple projected first rounders, inc. Quinn Hughes (7th overall/Vancouver) younger bro Jack (uncommited), who had a three pt. game.
No Gopher commits on U18 this season, but twelve are headed to eastern schools: BC (5), BU (4), Harvard (3).
I'm guessing Motzko will give Schierhorn the start in net with some adjustments in D pairings. IMO the lines looked good against UMD. Not sure how many Fs made the trip, but I hope Motzko keeps them basically as they were for UMD giving them more ice time together. Too bad there's no radio or live stream, I'd really like to hear/see this game. Go Gophers!
