Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

Not to nit-pick... well okay maybe just a little but for the record it is only a Jucy Lucy at Matt's Bar. Everywhere else that I've been includes the missing i.
:D

The others call it a Jucy Luicy?

:p

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

I thought it was only Jucy Lucy at Matt's but Juicy Lucy everywhere else?

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

Unless someone has already said this, but my personal top three are(forgive spelling)

1. Gasthoffs
2. Nyse Polynesian
3. Mayslacks

I'm sure you can google more info on them but they all are all-around fun with number 1 being a German Bar, 2 being a Polish bar and 3 being just a great place for good beef sandwiches and a pretty good time. Enjoy.

Yup. Here's a wiki on it. Hardly consider this link the authority on the subject, but does support what I believe to be true.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jucy_Lucy

Two bars on the same street in South Minneapolis both claim to have invented the sandwich: Matt's Bar and the 5-8 Club. They differ in how they spell it; the former omits the letter "I" in "Juicy", while the latter uses the standard spelling. Shirts worn by staff at the 5-8 Club have the motto "if it's spelled right, it's done right" while advertising for Matt's Bar says, "if it's spelled correctly, you're at the wrong place."

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

Alary's in St Paul was a great place. It became our home bar last year during the NCAA's. Nothing real fancy, but good beer prices and real friendly staff and really good service!

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

I didn't mean to start a "Jucy Lucy" revolution here but many thanks to all for your suggestions and comments. We're going to try one for sure. We are looking forward to our trip west and to get away from the snowstorm predicted for Friday. I'm not packing golf clubs for this trip, maybe next year. Thanks again!

No worries & just remember, the lucy may be been invented in Minneapolis but it was perfected in Saint Paul! :D

Staying in downtown Minneapolis, check out Hell's Kitchen for breakfast. The Buffalo sausage is awesome. I've only eaten there for breakfast but assume it's good all day. Live music off and on, even on Sunday mornings

Some bad news about Nye's Polynnaise Room:

Ruth, part of The World's Most Dangerous Polka Band, passed away during the Final Five weekend. I'm unsure if they still have live music in the back bar or not. That being said, the back bar itself (not the dining room, which is very "Goodfellas"-like in decor) it a total dive, tiny, and so awesome. Great food there, too, and I believe they have piano karoake on weekend nights in the main dining room.

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

For all of the golfers out there, it looks like the courses may not be ready by next weekend. The weather doesn't look too good until mid-next week and it's going to be too wet to play (we still have snow on the ground).

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

Obviously I'm going to give the 5-8 in Minneapolis a try next time i'm down there.

Don't bother. If you want a great burger, neither Matts or the 5-8 are worth it. Hit any of the Bulldog Restaurants for a burger. There is one in Lowertown St. Paul (about 7 blocks fromt he X) or in Minneapolis NE right across the river from downtown.

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

I will say that Matt's is in my top 3 burgers of all time, but I did have a bad burger there one time. Other restaurants I like in the Cities: La Cucaracha (Mexican) in St Paul, Donatelli's (Italian) in White Bear Lake, Al's Breakfast, Shuang Cheng (my fav Chinese place anywhere), and Burrito Loco in Dinkytown, Psycho Suzy's in NE Minneapolis, Market BBQ in Minneapolis. I've heard great things about Brasa, but have never been. A lot of the stuff down West 7th is very good, but very busy during event.

I think Brasa is okay. Food is good but I wouldn't go with really high expectations to be blown away. I would definitely go back, but not likely to make a special trip for it coming from my place 20+ minutes away.

That being said, I can't come up with anything new that hasn't already been thrown out there. I even got a few great ideas for myself next time I'm downtown.

If you are going to be over in NE Minneapolis you have to stop at 22nd street station(the double duece). Grab a drink up front and then head to the back room to see the skanky strippers(only topless). It is across the street from Gasthoffs.

If you want a steak at a old school type place Jax is right by both of those two places as well and has great food. These neighborhood places are so much better than the downtown stuff that you can get in any city.

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

Pazzaluna is St.Paul near the Lawson Center is a great place. Ask to sit at the counter by the cook line and save room for dessert. Walking distance from the X.

Re: Minneapolis/St Paul natives tour guide thread?

Speaking of naked service the KOD (King of Diamonds) is within about 15- 20 min of the X and a good spot for pre or post game activities.

If you want a experience you will never forget The Lamplighter is just up Rice St. from the X. just beware that it is considered bad etiquette to slide change through the slot in the bullet proof glass to the dancers. You may want to go before dark and make sure your shots are up to date.:D;):p:cool:
