Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

Re: Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

...not by me...

I am not happy with the demise of the interlock, which I suspect will lead me to pay less attention to things Middlebury in hockey. It's a shame. It's been a great run. I don't blame Midd for it, but I don't know that weeknight games are going to have the same kind of "pop" that the weekend games did in the interlock (of course, back when we were travel partners and playing on Tuesday nights, we had some good games).

I know, not by you, or any of the Wick fans for that matter...

At first I was disappointed about the break-up of the interlock too, but the more I think about it... The only teams that I'll miss playing in a conference game would be Norwich, St Anselm, and Babson. My guess is that we'll still play So. Maine and Skidmore as non conference games. I'd rather see someone else to be honest.:)

Re: Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

I'd take all the ridicuole and humilation Midd fans took over their eight national championships for just one Elmira championship...
:D The championships did take the sting out of the abuse, I always knew that envy was the root of it!

Well if Elmira is as good as some seem to think, maybe this is the year! Have you considered that they may face Wick?

I will miss Bowdoin, Amherst. and Trinity in particular. Colby, sort of. I won't miss Williams at all.

I won't miss Trinity at all, since they lost to University of New England and dropped me out of the Last Person Standing contest. Actually, I miss Kashmunnie, he was the only Trinity poster on here that I remember, and he was a great foil for NESCAC vs. the rest of the world. Willie C has been very silent this year and I miss his input also.

Oh well, on to other challenges and opponents.

Re: Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

Just noticed the score of the Castleton/Middlebury game won by Castleton 3-2. With a reported attendence of 1,945 and the teams only about 30 miles away from each other it would seem like a logical game for both teams each year. I don't know the story on the penalties but 14-55 minutes seems like a lot for Castleton. Any info on what caused the totals to add up? Castleton showed they are a prime time team by beating both Middlebury and Williams on an outstanding Route 7 weekend.

Middlebury will not play them....I think we have said this 30 times....I think the 14-55 line would be the reason as well....

Re: Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

Great attendance and atmosphere at today's game. Strong turnout by the Castleton faithful. Castleton is a very solid team that should go deep into the NCAA tournament this year. I doubt very much that Castleton will be on the Middlebury's non-league schedule in the future.

Middlebury played very well today, just needed to get another puck or two into the net. They get home ice for the first round of the NESCAC playoffs. They will need to win out to get an NCAA bid. I don't see the NESCAC getting more than one bid this year. Every team in the field has a legit chance of winning the NESCAC tourney. I, for one, look forward to the demise of the interlock. It never made any sense to me. In every other sport (except skiing) the NESCAC teams compete within their league, throw in a few non-league tilts, and have their own tourney (there is no NESCAC football tournament or non-league games) to determine the NESCAC champ and the auto bid. No reason why hockey should be any different.

Re: Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

Can anyone say what the bench misconduct was at the end of the game?

A ten minute misconduct was issued to Coach Todd, I don't know why, but I expect that he had some choice words for the officials.

Re: Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

Apparently the interlock relates to the website post-game articles too

Castleton: http://www.csc.vsc.edu/athletics/mhockey/games/mid0219.htm

Middlebury: http://www.middlebury.edu/athletics/sports/menshockey/archive/2010-2011/news/node/272456

Granted, both are describing the same events, but, I'm thinking it is the same author - or plagiarism

Example of exact wording:

The Spartans made it a 2-0 game at 10:55 with Stefan scoring his team-leading 19th goal of the season, this one on the power play. Tyler Atkins (Brockville, Ont.) sent in a blast from the left wing that deflected off Stefan for the tally.

Nerbak nearly tied the game moments later, but his shot hit the left post.

Middlebury made it a one-goal game just 21 seconds into the third period, with J.D. Vermette (Boucherville, Que.) netting his eighth of the season.

Though Castleton's site notes the players hometowns, and Middlebury's doesn't.

Hard to say which was posted first, although the Midd one was updated last.

Re: Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

Article in today's Burlington Free Press. CVU's Dobrowski headed to Middlebury College to play hockey. Good for him.

Re: Middlebury Panthers Hockey 2010- 2011

Well, hopefully Dobrowski and others will help the Panthers next season. Unfortunately, I will have to focus solely on lacrosse a lot earlier than usual this year.

I know not everyone had the season that they were expected to have, but down the stretch Griffin, Dubuc and Resor were all missing in action. I know Dubuc got in the midseason dog house, but got out of it and Resor was just unlucky around the net, but is there any other reasons these guys disappeared from the active roster at crunch time?

“Ever since I was little, I watched them play. It’s a beautiful campus and a great hockey program, and I get to play there,” Dobrowski said. “It’s just incredible. I couldn’t be happier.”

And they have, coach Bill Beaney

Unfortunately they also are part of an elitist conference whose philosophy makes me sick. :(

Do you mean the academic/social aspect of the NESCAC is elitist or the hockey philosophy itself? I certainly feel the NESCAC hockey teams overrate their league compared to some of the teams out west but I don't think the players themselves are very elitist.

I think he is referring to the league's relationship to the rest of DIII hockey in terms of scheduling, the (perceived) lack of respect shown the ECAC E in the way that the Interlock was ended (no real official announcement - any official statements made months after the decision was a fact), and other bad PR type moves that say to the outside world "we don't really care what you think." The perception is that they don't play well with others. It may or may not be the case, but the impression that all this leaves is that they feel that they are better than the rest of DIII.

I remember when the NESCAC decided to stop playing non-league games in football. There was a real bitter feeling (still is) in Northfield about the way that created an end to a long standing football rivalry between Norwich and Middlebury.

In many ways, in DI the Ivies have taken similar steps - no post season in FB, a more limited season in hockey, need only financial aid, etc. The public perception is that the Ivies play better with others in their athletic relationships.

It is perceived by many that the NESCAC's attitude is "play our way or we'll take our ball and go home." The Ivy's attitude seems to be more "we'd like to play it our own way, but we can work with you to make it work when we don't match."

These are the signals that are being sent.

Prof I have had quite a bit of contact with Dartmouth students and staff over the years and haven't observed any elitist attitude. You find all type's of people at these schools just like you would at Norwich. Now the NESCAC Admin people are in another class for no other reason in the way the interlock was ended without any notice for a number of months. With the interlock ended and the season extended for Norwich and Castleton it gives the fans in Vermont a chance to travel around to see teams like Middlebury play when no games are scheduled for your home team. I an looking forward to traveling down to Thompson Arena next fall to see how the Cadets match up with D1 Dartmouth.
