Mid Summer Classic - Chowder

Re: Mid Summer Classic - Chowder

You may want to check your facts. The A division does allow for 1991 born players, some of whom played in college last year. I'm aware of at least two D1 players who were freshmen last year, playing in the A division this coming weekend.

Sorry...I guess what I meant was that it would be hard to come up with a whole team of D-1 skaters in the A division whereas couple of the AA teams have mostly D-1 skaters. Also, isn't there a limitation on the number of 91s?

Not aware of a limitation in numbers for a given birth year, at least not as per this note from the Chowder cup website:

Women's Chowder Cup (Two Divisions) July 30th, 31st, Aug.1st
Double AA Division (16-20 yrs. old- No 1989's are eligible to play in this Division)
Single A Division ( 15-19 yrs. old- No 1990's are eligible to play in this Division)

Who might that be? What DI player wants to play in the "A" Division?

Re: Mid Summer Classic - Chowder

Well, the 2010 edition is underway. Who will come out on top come Sunday afternoon? As they say, "Only time will tell." ;)

Maybe one that wants to play with former teamates or one that wants give back to the program that put them in hockey to start. Loyality is a big part of what makes a player attractive to schools too.

Re: Mid Summer Classic - Chowder

NAHA wins the Chowder Cup AA over Base AA. Congrats to all the girls that played

Re: Mid Summer Classic - Chowder

Well looks like we were in the right division…good trip for our girls…

Go Bulldogs!

Yeah, and I think a lot more teams will be playing in the A division in the future. Unless you have a team with a slew of surefire D1 prospects (IceCats) or have a mix of prospects and current D1 players (NAHA, Base, Team Celine etc.) you are going to find yourself trying to tread water in the deep end of the pool.

I`m guessing that is one thought that everyone can agree on. Maybe they can throw a little change towards that department.
i think we would all agree about the website, but for those that were in attendance, would have to agree that the tailgating hosted by deb and hux was top notch and off the charts. too bad they don't develop websites also. very enjoyable weekend.

WHAT? How did I miss the tailgates??? LOL. It was a fun weekend. A lot of good teams, but also some that are lower in each bracket. Does anyone know -- have they ever thought about having a college division, AA and A? then the teams that load up with college players will have all good competition for themselves and scouts don't have to waste time watchign a bunch of players that already play elsewhere....the AA division could be for college prospects and the A division for the lower teams that are there more for fun.

Re: Mid Summer Classic - Chowder

I enjoyed the Sunday version of the tailgate and it COMPLETELY outranks the website, "fer shurr, eh"?

DC and Hux, I'd be remiss not to thank you again more formally!

Nicely done!

My thoughts exactly! Saw more than a few lopsided games this weekend, with some A teams deserving the bump up to AA and vice versa. Missed the Sunday games though...who was Base Hockey? They didn't look as strong as the likes of Global or NAHA, but evidently they did well for themselves.

Base Hockey was a team put together by Shelley Looney that consisted of University players from the US and Canada. Base Hockey is a new custom stick company that sponsored the team to try and get their name out there. I guess it worked! I wondered too so I asked one of their parents.

With regard to the brackets, I 2nd "My thoughts exactly!" From what I heard, a lot of complaints from college coaches -- none of the scouts really want to watch the college all-star teams or the lower A teams because there is no one there for them to recruit. And to have them driving back and forth between rinks. They could have one bracket for all non-college players that are truly u19 tier 1 level teams. But some of those teams may have good players but they will get killed if they played against the all-college teams.

I would also say the more and more Canadian teams also increases the level of competition and the lower A teams just can't really compete at all. The A qrtrs were all pretty good games, lots of legitimate prospects there. Coincidentally they were all US vs. Canada teams which was kind of cool to watch. Unfortunately the defending champs, USA Selects were eliminated in the qrtrs (despite having at least four or five u18 team players!) Them losing was the biggest surprise to me. And the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite team made a good showing as the only US team to advance to the semis. Their goalie kept them in a couple of the games though.
