Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

Re: Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

Ok I agree with number 1, Number 2 really doesn't fly since he wants to play pro so at some time will have to be away from home.

Hmmm, maybe someone should tell him that there may be better avenues to playing major professional hockey than NCAA D3?

It would be tough to raise a family on a CHL or SPHL wage, and it's a rare occasion that NHL scouts are combing D3 games looking for that "special" 25 or 26 year old senior...

Re: Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

1 -- Most improved returning player (on last season's roster)?
O'Brien would be up there. Maybe not most improved, but Boyd has returned to form after never being healthy last season.

2 -- Most improved "new" player from start of this season?
I'm not sure anyone jumps out at me here. This is probably a much easier end of the year question.

3 -- Hardest working player?
Like most, I'd say Ryd is a good choice here. Pulak would also gladly trade a a few bruises or a gash for a good shift, so he deserves mention. Longley and Allen have also shown some good work here.

4 -- Top offensive player?
This is probably easy to say because he's the leading scorer, but I think a lot starts with Wheeler because of his great vision. He's a guy who sets up goal scorers very nicely. I don't expect him to end the season as the leading goal scorer, although I do expect he'll have the most assists and most points when it's all said and done. I was a little surprised when Tim broke him and Boyd up after the team's poor offensive effort up in Duluth over Thanksgiving weekend. I guess he was looking for more balance. I just think Wheeler needs to be on the ice with snipers and they could always use him. I'd give Tabisz (whether at D or F) and Boyd as much ice time with Wheeler as possible.

5 -- Top defensive player?
I've always liked Nopper's work. He won't light up the score sheet, but he's usually where he belongs. For the forwards Pulak plays as well in his own zone as anyone you'll find.

6 -- Player, whose play has slipped from last season's performance?
I don't know if being moved around has impacted him, but I know Tabisz can score a lot more consistently than what we've seen. It sounds funny for a point a game guy, but he's as skilled of a defenseman as you'll find in D3 hockey and he's one of the better forwards when he moves up there. I like Joanette's skills and I'd like to see him over a point a game. Maybe more PP time would help. I thought Walz was last year's most improved player. I'd love to see him have more than a single assist.

7 -- Summarize your comments about the season to date:Surprised at success? Disappointed? About what you expected? Other comments??
I didn't know what to expect coming in with all of the off-season turmoil. O'Brien's improvement was big. The newcomers have sprinkled in some contributions. The top line was really clicking early. After dominating Stout on the road everything looked like they would roll thru the NCHA after the first month. They weren't winning big every night, but O'Brien was stepping up in the games they weren't scoring at least 4 or 5. Then came the trip to Duluth. While they did get a win, they scored only 2 goals in 2 games. They didn't play overly inspired for most of the next game against St. Scholastica at home, although they almost scrambled to steal a point they probably didn't deserve. I was very encouraged to see them show some fight late Friday and then handle Scholastica in a very solid effort on Saturday. Unfortunately any momentum was lost with a 5 week break. The schedule looks very favorable, which takes me to point 8.

8 -- Where will SNC finish in final NCHA standings?
I think they'll go wire to wire in first place. They have some weekends in there where I expect them to take care of business. They key weekend could be the trip to Duluth and Superior on 2/5 & 2/6. If they can get 3 points there no matter how you add them up, I think they'll be set. The 2/12 game at home versus Stout could be interesting, although I'm not sure Stout will be in a position to help their title hopes as much as hurt SNCs. I'll predict they go into that game with a chance to wrap it up.

9 -- Will SNC qualify for the NCAA's? If so, how far do we go?
They will qualify. I think they get a home game in the Quarters and win it to get to Lake Placid. After that it's hard to say. I'd be happy with a Frozen Four trip. Anything else is gravy.

10 -- Will we play Adrian @ the CCC in the NCAA's?
I'd love to see it but I don't think so. I think we'll get 4 West teams in. I think Adrian and Scholastica will play the 2-3 game in the NCAA Quarters with SNC hosting Gustavus, Hamline, or St. Thomas in the 1-4 game.

An Adrian-St. Scholastica QF game is not possible based the travel guidelines laid out in the Championships Handbook. The only non-MCHA teams in the West close enough to play Adrian in a NCAA game are St. Norbert and Stevens Point.

Pairings and Site Selection
Once automatic qualifiers are identified and the Pools B and C teams are selected, the
following guidelines should be followed:

• Once selected, teams will be grouped in clusters according to natural geographic proximity. Teams will then be paired according to geographic proximity. A team may be moved to numerically balance the bracket, if geographic proximity is maintained. Teams should be paired and eligible sites should be selected according to geographic proximity (within 500 miles).
Teams may be seeded on a regional basis using the regional selection criteria. However, geographic proximity takes precedence over seeding.
• Teams from the same conference do not have to play one another in the first round, as long as geographic proximity is maintained.
• The highest-seeded team that meets all site selection criteria will be selected as the host institution, provided geographic proximity is maintained.

Though, I guess the use of the word "should" means just about anything could happen. There's also nothing that directly specifies that a team has to stay in its region, meaning Adrian could very well go East for the first round due to "geographic proximity" -- especially with Oswego and Elmira both looking like tournament teams.

In the case of 7-4 I highly doubt that would go over too well, however.

Unless Adrian gets shipped East, if it's 7-4 and Adrian and St. Norbert both are in it's Adrian @ SNC in a quarterfinal. Anything else and I'll be asking some questions.

If we win the conference tournament....and.......
if it's Oswego and if..we were to win at Oswego on Jan 8th .....would/could that game have any bearing on who would have the home game in the tournament ?

Watch Western heads explode with this prediction.

If all three of Adrian, Oswego, and Elmira get in, Adrian will be treated as an Eastern team by playing a first round game at Elmira, with the winner scheduled to play Oswego. The rest of the West will get the NCHA champ with a first round bye and the NCHA runner up getting the MIAC champs. The net result would be like an 8-3 split with Adrian the 8th Eastern team. It's pretty logical and works well for the travel arrangements. Adrian would hit the road regardless, because the NCAA could ship them out for their first rounder by bus, and if they win the game they'd just hike up the road to prepare for the quarters and bus their way home afterwards.

Re: Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

OK, back to SNC talk!

My opinion only!!!!

1. Most improved returning player: O'Brien followed closely by Allen.
2. Most improved new player from beginning of season: Hands down it is Favreau who has been outstanding and should receive some recognition at the end of the year from the NCHA if his play continues at the same level or shows improvement.
3. Hardest Working: Ryd by a mile, but followed by Pulak and Allen.
4. Top offensive player: Wheeler followed by Boyd. No reason to seperate the two in future games.
5. Top defensive player: Nopper as far as a clear defenseman, Favreau is a close second.
6. Player who has slipped a bit: Very small set back but I would have to say Hammerbeck and Tika. Again, minor set backs that can be corrected in the second half.
7. Summary of season so far: Just about what I expected even with the off ice issues from last year. As I stated many times this last off season, never bet against a Tim. C. team. I think that his coaching is even more of a difference maker with the two game weekend series.
8. SNC position in the NCHA at the end of the year: First
9. SNC to the NCAA's: Yes and I feel that they will make it to Lake Placid where anything can happen at that point.
10. Adrian to CCC: No as I will predict that the MCHA auto will go to Lawrence, the upset winner of the MCHA tourney.

Re: Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

sitting out a year is not that good for a top flight goalie....I don't think he can even practice with the team if he is sitting out. Could be real rusty one year from now.

I heard that the goalie transfer will not join the team until next season, to maintain two full years of eligibilty or are you talking about a different BIG transfer??:) :)

Quiet time, Crosby.

At the very least perhaps he could practice with SNC's "JV" squad, which competes vs. club teams...

With SNC's Assistant Coach, A.J. Aitken also being the Head Coach of Men's JV Hockey, I wouldn't think it wise to test the waters as to what the NCAA might consider a practice - even if he were to wear a fluffy pink bunny suit.

No! Any practice with a school affiliated team after the first game of the season counts as a year of competition. If SNC has intramural hockey or if he would play in a men's league he'd be okay.

Re: Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

Whatever. To be honest I'm not worried the least little bit about LaRose. SNC has a good squad this season with half of it still to go, and LaRose isn't a member of that team. If he is next year great, but right now goaltending isn't an issue.

Would it be against NCAA regulations if LaRose did one armed pushups all spring and didn't talk to any girls, cadet style?

Re: Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

on LaRose:
How old is he? USHL/Gamblers?

on SNC:
first place at the break is very satisifying to me

Re: Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

Word on the street is Larose is going to Neumann. As for St. Norbert this year, I wouldnt say theyre a surprise but they certainly have played well almost the whole year so far. Long as the goalie holds up they should hold on to first place.

Re: Mid Season SNC Review -- Commentary, etc...

received news from a reliable source in gb that kurt astle has transferred back to st norbert and will play second semester

But if it is ACHA, then it's a freebie.
