Michigan Wolverines 2015-2016 Season

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2015-2016 Season

In town for the weekend series. Fun for our guys to play at Yost. Wish we had played you last year - probably one of our better teams in awhile that bear several Final 16 teams. Down a little bit this year, but we'll play hard. Any suggestions for a pregame watering hole?

It depends on what you want, however there basically isn't anything right by Yost. I was originally going to suggest the R.U.B. BBQ bar & grill but it is closed. I have no idea why or even when this happened. Maybe someone else can shed some light on the subject, although I have my suspicions.

I'll still give you a suggestion although I'm not too sure how appropriate it will be. I personally like The Brown Jug on South University. That's actually quite the stroll from Yost too (unless you know where you're going). Now The Jug might be full of college kids before the game and I absolutely guarantee it will be after. The Jug has good bar food, it's just your standard bar fare but it isn't bad. There is also Ashley's which is on State St. (same road as Yost) but that is a hike as well. Ashley's has a ton of beer on tap. The RedHawk is another good bar but that's a hike as well. Actually the RedHawk is only a few doors down from Ashley's so that might be a good place to go one day (so you can hit Ashley's too). Conner O'Neil's is an Irish Bar which is cool but that's all the way in downtown Ann Arbor on Main St. Maybe you can go there for lunch Saturday if you want but it's up to you. It definitely isn't within walking distance. One place that I almost forgot about is Dominick's. Dominick's is great but, to me at least, it's more of a spring/summer bar. It definitely is its own place. I suggest going just for the experience. It is actually probably one of the closer bars to Yost. It's been a while since I frequented the bar scene in Ann Arbor so if/when you go to one ask the people there if they have any suggestions. Welcome.

Helpful hint, don't yell "go green" anywhere other than Yost (and I still don't suggest it there). If you say that people will automatically think that you are referring to michigan state, that's not the best thing to say in Ann Arbor. But DO NOT say anything positive about ohio state, also leave yourself plenty of time to get from one place to another. This is ohio state weekend and football Saturdays are always packed but ohio state will be worse. DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT go anywhere near the football stadium on Saturday. Thankfully "The Game" is a 12:00 kickoff so most of the game traffic will be gone by 6:00 but there still will be a ton left. I don't think parking will be that much of an issue. I could be wrong though, I haven't checked the other sports schedules.

Have fun and I suggest getting to Yost early one night that way you can walk around it and take it all in.

South end of State street, a couple of miles from campus near I-94 also has a Macaroni Grill, Buffalo Wild Wings and a Red Robin. As UMich stated, not a huge selection near Yost but Mr. Spots is a good local joint a short walk north of the arena (grinders, etc.) and across the street from them is another pizza place that isn't too bad. Neither serve, though, so best bet is to choose one of UMich's options.

R.U.B. BBQ was really good IMO, but that location has been bad luck for any establishment. Seemed like it was always busy in the Fall and Winter, but you have to pay the bills all year. Nothing seems to stick there, but apparently something else is coming in that spot.

Dartmouth hasn't played Michigan since 1979. I'm just glad it is not another Atlantic Hockey team. But yeah, not a ton of star power on the home nc schedule this season.

Of course Bob Gaudet was a goaltender at Dartmouth during those times. Maybe you'll get to see him throw a clipboard on the ice this weekend. ;)

I was a junior in high school when he played Michigan last and attended the game. He was very competitive then too. ;)

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2015-2016 Season

Thanks for the tips. Checked out The Jug - just what we were looking for. Should have stayed there for the game. Men vs. Boys. You guys looked great- we didn't. Hopefully we'll be a little more competitive tonight. Loved your student section - we sat next to them and they were the most entertaining part of the game! Also have to agree that the parking situation around Yost is about as bad as I've seen at any arena. Good luck with OSU today!

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2015-2016 Season

Night and day difference. I think you found a goaltender. Not sure why there was a shoot-out, practice? It meant nothing so why? Oh well, you guys played great tonight. Like I said, a night/day difference. I didn't go tonight, rather watched it online.

Hey BigGreen,

I crossed paths with a few Dartmouth players last night at a bar in Ypsi. I think there were 4 people total in the group which included 2 or 3 players. It was at Sidetrack in Depot Town. Nothing really happened other than when they walked past me I told them "Good game." Was it you? Where did you find that goalie?

Wasn't me, but Coach gave them a 1 AM curfew - they flew back this morning. Game was really different - we played much better and figured out how to kill a penalty. You guys looked a little hungover from the OSU debacle. Buffalo played great - his first start. I think we'll see more of him this year! Thought we were going to win it in OT with the long 4 on 3. Your backup played well. I felt bad for our other goalie on Friday as many of the your PP goals were back door - nothing he could really do. Was a great trip - loved the atmosphere at Yost. Good luck the rest of the year!

Thanks, yea I saw them at 11:30 I think so they could have easily made the curfew. Either they are originally from the area or they simply read GQ years ago (http://www.gq.com/story/hamburger-death-eat). I just looked at your roster and I guess it could have been River Rymsha-#2. He's from Huntington Woods, which is 40 miles from Ypsilanti. That's not exactly the area but they knew about Sidetrack from being in Ann Arbor previously I assume. Not sure if you saw it but the students made a sign that read "#2 cheated off of me in High School". That was awesome, I hope that he saw that sign. Good luck to you too.

Saw the sign - it was awesome. Our guys our fairly resourceful finding interesting spots when allowed - must be that Ivy education -- Ha! Ha!

Hello? Anybody home?

If it's all the same to you, we'd prefer it if Friday we could play the team that lost to BU and tied Dartmouth.

Thanks.

You guys should know about losing to BU.... no disgrace in that or any of your other losses this season. BUT, in fairness to our program, the loss to RMU and tie with Dartmouth had a common thread in that we made both goaltenders look like Vezina candidates. They did not play well against RMU but played well vs. Dartmouth-but the team couldn't finish. Both opponents got the lead- a major accomplishment for Dartmouth- and played outstanding defense, too. At least you didn't lose to Arizona State and have handed over the worst team candidacy to CC this season.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2015-2016 Season

Feel free to start a thread. I almost did a few times today.

I went down that road a few weeks ago and had to talk to myself all week to get if off page one. No thanks. I'll just clog up this one. ;)

If us and the rest of the B1G had any sense we'd throw every game to you guys all season in exchange for your bowing out of the conference tournament. With our collective NC record, MI is the only team that stands a real chance to get in to the NCAA's on PWR alone. IF you don't lose many in conference which could be disastrous. That way the B1G could get 2 teams in.But I digress.

Yes we know all about losing to BU lately. Except one time last year when we were up 3-1 with a minute to play and we tied. BUT you guys should be aware we beat UND @ UND! Hopefully in two months we're not still repeating this as our only accomplishment.

Wisco is probably playing better than about half the teams, IMO. Probably have more talent than about two-thirds, but it's inexperienced talent and prone to fatal lapses. I actually have no idea what to expect this weekend. Boys have apparently been working hard on details and if they can improve enough there, it will be competitive, and they can even surprise, as I have little doubt they will be underrated by opponents until they can put something together. 18 year old replacement goalie Matt Jurusic has been playing fairly well for us, but stopping a lot of Wolverine odd man rushes is likely a bit above his pay grade. One thing we do have going is outside of ASU (who incidentally has a couple of pretty good players) we've been in against a lot of good teams. BC, BU, UND, DU for speed and talent, and NMU and @Ferris State for weird rink and big, mature players. The steep learning curve continues this week for the Badgers. A split would be awesome.

Our defensive play (not just the blueliners, although the pairing of Downing and Werenski is struggling) is our achilles heel. That and erratic goaltending. Look for junior Zach Nagelvoort to play both games as senior Steve Racine took a shot off the knee (the puck appeared to hit him to the side/under his pads) and is "week to week".

Dartmouth did a good job employing a two man forecheck (like Michigan does) and disturbed the breakouts. Then, they fell into a neutral zone trap- which Michigan refused to dump the puck and chase in order to beat. It was like watching paint dry at times, although we did have a few counters or solo rushes that didn't amount to much. I see the Badgers doing the same thing and yes- a split is a definite possibility. Gonna have to be some grimy goals this weekend.

Quick Badger rundown: We're in a similar situation with a really aggressive forecheck giving us all sorts of problems. Badgers have completely changed their breakout scheme this year and when they have it together they do have a lot of team speed and can get it out and go. But it's very inconsistent. Was very good against UND, who is aggressive, but against DU it was miserable. Thing is, UND is probably a better and quicker forechecking team. Go figure. Badgers haven't been waiting back in a regular trap, (despite their reputation, they haven't done much of this in a couple of years.) but they are very aggressive in the neutral zone and it's generally hard to get it in clean. What has killed them is turnovers and blown assignments in their own end. They can be good, but very inconsistent.

Top line can be very good. Hughes, with Besse and Kunin. Hughes can really skate and Kunin and Besse have monster shots. Fun to watch work, but again, Hughes is 18 and Kunin 17. All talented though. Second line is pretty good too. Rockwood is a passing wizard and Soleway is big, very strong, and shoots it a lot. But there's no guy like Compher or UND's Caggiula to just sort of hold everything together and be consistent. The rest of the guys have been a little mix and match around USNTDP vet, Ryan Wagner, who is a 5'8" guy that thinks he's 6'4" 220. On D, Steady Eddie Witchow is good, can be a beast in a small rink. Gave BC and BU fits. Kevin Schulze is small but usually the best skater on the ice. Can make up for other's mistakes with his speed. Linhart has a seeing eye shot and a knack for offense from the point, but can be good or terrible on the other end. Same goes for Davison, only moreso. Tischke is a freshman who will be pretty good but isn't there yet. And that leaves Paddy Sexton. Oddly (in light of this weeks age limit proposal) the first 21 yr old Freshman I recall seeing the ice at UW in quite some time. Not overly gifted but very smart player and just a huge hitter. In goal Jurusic has the chops, and we were actually pretty lucky to get him in when Opilka bolted to the CHL this summer, but he's really still learning on the job.

I was at Yost for Michigan's 7-0 victory over Dartmouth on Fri., 11/27/15. Here is a link to photos I took of the game, including photos of the student holding the sign "#2 cheated off me in high school," referring to River Rymsha from Huntington Woods, Mich. You can download photos from the site. If anyone knows the student, please send him the photo/link. Thanks.

Anyone else see Racine dressed and on the ice stretching but not on the bench? That was interesting, he must not be that far away.
