Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Okay now that the B1G Ten Network has officially completed the screwing started by the B1G Ten Conference where is everyone going to park for Saturday's game?

First the conference schedules the games v. Penn State to be here on the same day as a football game. They could have just as easily flipped the home dates with the ones in March @ PSU and there would have been no problem. PSU football is at Illinois this weekend.

Now on Sunday the B1G Ten Network determined that the football game V. Maryland will start at 3:30. That means that the football game will be ending just as hockey fans are starting to arrive. It's going to be a C-L-U-S-T-E-R on Saturday folks!

So now what are they doing to Yost?

Regents to approve design for $49 million Dennison renovation

By CLAIRE BRYAN, Daily Staff Reporter
Published November 17, 2014

At Thursday’s meeting of the University’s Board of Regents, the governing body will vote to approve schematic designs for a $49 million renovation of the David M. Dennison Building.

The regents will also consider several other capital projects, including designs for the new Biological Science Building, renovations for the second floor of Lorch Hall and improvements to Yost Ice Arena.

In July 2014, the board approved the Dennison project and the hiring of Diamond Schmitt Architects to design the project. Thursday’s vote of approval will put the project into action.

If approved, LSA will relocate the International Institute and associated centers for international studies from the School of Social Work to the Dennison Building after the renovation is completed.

Approximately 106,000 gross square feet that have been vacated by the relocation of the Department of Astronomy from Dennison to West Hall will be renovated. Classrooms will be repurposed to create spaces for faculty work as well as graduate and undergraduate student collaboration.

The renovation is also expected to add 1,500 gross square feet of space to the building by enclosing an overhang area on the first floor and extending windows outward on the 10th floor. This will create a 10-story high-rise section of the building.

The estimated $49 million project will be funded entirely by LSA resources and investment proceeds. Scheduled construction will be completed in the summer of 2017.

Approved last winter, the new Biological Science Building will be built adjacent to the Life Sciences Institute on the site of the historic North Hall and the Museums Annex, both of which will be demolished.

The building is expected to cost $261 million, funded by LSA and Office of the Provost resources. From that total, $9 million is earmarked for the demolition of North Hall and the Museums Annex.

Currently, the Kraus Natural Science Building, built in 1915, houses the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. This building has reached its capacity for the current number of researchers it can support and is limited in its ability to allow contemporary research, according to the project proposal. The two departments will eventually relocate to the new building.

The Ruthven Museums Building houses an additional part of EEB and the Anthropology, Natural History, Paleontology and Zoology museums. These museums, along with a portion of Herbarium specimens and dry collections, will transfer to the new building.

The facility will include new research laboratories, active learning classrooms with group tables instead of auditorium-esque seating, offices and the four museum collections. The laboratories will be constructed in an open plan to allow for increased collaboration.

The project will also build a connector from the new building to the Life Sciences Institute.

Both the EEB and MCDB are slated to complete their relocation to the new facility by 2019.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

What is wrong with the ice system, et al that they just put in? For crying out loud that's the only reason why I tolerated the rennovation in the first place. I was in Yost during construction, as was alfa, they re-did that crap then. If something is wrong the original company should pay for that repair. Also, why wasn't the north end of the roof addressed before? I understand that this won't really affect much as it is over the summer but come on people...

I bet this is DB Brandon's fault.

I was originally going to strongly consider attending Saturday's game but thank you for reminding me about the parking issue. And to think, we complained before when there was a bouncy-ball game, gymnastics meet, and a hockey game the same day.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

This is so sad...

Jack Johnson's Bankruptcy Filing Claims His Parents Spent All His Money

If you haven't yet read the Columbus Dispatch article on Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson, do so. It's an insane (but not uncommon) story about how a pro athlete, who signed a $30.5 million contract in 2011, ends up filing for bankruptcy.

In 2008, Johnson fired his agent. When Johnson signed that seven-year contract in 2011, he also gave his mother, Tina Johnson, control over his finances. Tina ended up borrowing approximately $15 million against Johnson's future earnings, according to the Dispatch. (The practice of "monetizing" a contract is discouraged, as it usually leads to an increasing hole of debt.) There's more, involving Johnson's father, Jack Johnson, Sr.:

Because Johnson's name is on the loans, he has been sued at least three times for more than $6 million for defaulting, as in the case of the mortgage on a house in Manhattan Beach, Calif. In court documents, Johnson says his parents bought the house with his money but without his knowledge.

Johnson's parents allegedly each bought a car, spent more than $800,000 on upgrades to the Manhattan Beach property and traveled, often to see him play NHL games for the Kings and Blue Jackets.

"Jack would ask (his parents) questions: 'What's this? What are these guys calling about?'  " a source said. "And they would tell him not to worry about it, just worry about playing hockey.

"These were his parents, right? He trusted them. It wasn't until last spring or early summer that he understood there was a significant problem."
A few of the loans are listed in the piece, and they all have impossibly high interest rates, such as one $3 million loan with a 24 percent interest rate. Johnson's taking the matter to court in an attempt to recoup what he can.

Johnson filed for bankruptcy, declaring assets of less than $50,000. He has reportedly stopped talking to his family.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

This episode really makes me think about the whole parent influence on a kid when they are at college... As in how much of the bad attitude can be linked quickly to the family?

Many of you may remember that I was no fan of Johnson's- mostly due to his attitude toward the other players and his on ice situational knowledge. (he didn't come back and "congratulate" with the Sauer after a goal, and did a lot of self interest things vs. team things on ice, as I saw it).

We also had a "fan" who seemed to be very family like here who complained that the team was bringing his massive talent down. IMHO, the great ones elevate the play of the whole team vs complain about the team bringing them down.

So did Jack have family who always was in his year complaining about the team?

Him and TJ seemed to be very alike- super talented, but not team players. But they were so talented that many of us assumed that we would have a bad year after they left- which would have been really bad as we barely made the NCAA's that year. Instead, Kevin Porter took his talent and attitude and brought the entire team UP and maded it to the Frozen Four. Which, to me, was a great illustration of midset and attitude having a massive influence on the team.

So one wonders how much Red has to combat a kid's attitude vs. his family's.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

What in the world do we have to do to beat Penn State? This is getting embarrassing. When do we play AIC again? Please be next weekend...

I may not be the best person to judge this situation but to me, an infrequent casual observer at the time, Jack Sr. was around the team a lot. I "think" that he dropped-in on a couple of practices. alfa, next time that you talk to Coach Berenson ask him about what he thought of Jack Sr. I highly doubt that he'll say anything but throw somthing at the wall to see if it'll stick.

I'll see what I can find out via my sources but once again, I doubt if they'll say anything.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

I am visiting Ann Arbor for the 1st time today. I plan to catch some of the football game, probably through half time, find a place to eat and then go to Yost. I'd like to park once hopefully at somewhat reasonable cost and then walk. I've Googled and found Connor O'Neils, Grizzly Peak and Arbor Brewing. Ideas, thoughts, dos/donts (other than don't wear a UNH cap) are appreciated.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

DO wear the UNH cap!! Great team and program, and fans will appreciate you visiting!

It's about a mile walk from most of the restaurants you have looked into, both from the stadium and back to Yost. But they are good choices, as there isn't much near the athletic stuff. Good way to wander around Ann arbor.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

How could we lose last night and then absolutely destroy Penn State tonight?

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

I had a great time at Yost last night. Old school historic arena with state of the art modern improvements. Fantastic sight lines, friendly people, impressive student section, superior sound and video. All the "Championship" (not appearance) banners. Wow! Don't ever take it for granted. Thanks!

It was better before the rennovations/ DB Brandon got to it. Trust me, all real fans know this. But thank you.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2014-15 season

Who was at the games this past weekend that would like to share what they thought of the atmosphere?

I missed both games, but a friend tells me there was canned music, forced enthusiasm from the announcer and other pro atmosphere type stuff. Any opinions?

Haven't heard anything about that but if true I'm less than thrilled. I thought we got rid of DB Brandon?
