Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Pretty sure the Big Ten has shootouts. Which i am not in favor of.

The B1G has shootouts but they are only mandatory for conference games. During non-conference games at home, the coaches can agree to have a shootout if the game ends tied after overtime. If they do go to a shootout, it is even more of an exhibition than it is during conference play.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Gutty OT win again a solid UNH team. I didn't see the whole game, but it sure appears as if the officials called this series really tight making it a special teams game most of the time.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Good weekend guys. At least one B1G team showed up to play in showcase games this weekend.

Sounds like this Michigan squad is poised to do some good things this season. Should make those late season UMN vs UM series a ton of fun to watch. This rivalry is going to heat back up in no time :)

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Thank you for keeping the conference from getting swept off the rink!

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

The boys are playing confident now, but defensively there is still some improvements to be made. Nice to see our back-up netminder step up with Racine down with a "lower body injury". BU and UML at Yost next weekend should be fun.

On the other hand, seeing Wisconsin get manhandled twice was surprising. MSU is still trying to piece together their talent, so their struggles are not too shocking.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

One tie, one win- pretty darned good.

Especially since this team is quite young, last year we struggled, the penalties were called tight, our #1 goalie was injured, Red admitted we didn't play well Friday, it was a major away weekend....

I'm sure a lot can be added to that.

So all things considered- it was a heck of a weekend.

And this weekend should be a blast! BU is apparently playing well, and UML will try get get their MoJo back.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Business is taking me to Ann Arbor this week, and I am going to take in Friday night's tilt against BU. I am excited for my first visit to Yost, and I was hoping to get some advice from you all.

Tickets: which section do visiting team fans generally sit in?

Pre- and Post game: what local establishment is a must visit for pre- and post game frosty malted beverages?

At the areana: what are the things to see / food to try / stuff to do at Yost that are a must for 1st time visitor?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, and if you are at Friday's game, I'll be the doughy middle-aged guy trying to quietly and respectfully pull for the visitors. Stop over and say Hi.

The visitors team is in front of section 18. The first 4 or 5 rows are visiting team families, etc. Behind those are home student seats. Also section 6 has some visiting school allotments. I take it you don't already have a ticket. I MIGHT have my 2nd seat available but won't know for certain until Thursday evening. Penalty box side, blue line, on the glass. If my son-in-law ends up not making it and you are still without I'll let you have it for face. We'll just have to figure out how to get in touch.

Pre/Post game "Must stops" are subject to personal prejudices. There is really only one nearby the arena, R.U.B. BBQ and Pub, corner of State ST. & Packard, about 1/4 mile north of Yost. That's not really a "Must stop" it's just convenient. The others are a couple of miles away.

Stuff at the arena - not much really. The trophy/history display cases in the north concourse is about it. The food - well all I will say is it fills an empty spot.

minnesota grad, current michigan student here with another visiting fan question:

I've heard the student section is pretty hostile (more so than mariucci's), if I want to save a few bucks and sit in the student section with my gophers jersey, am i just going to be harassed the whole game? worth it to drop the extra however much to sit in the visitor section? I can take a little abuse (not like I was the most welcoming to sioux fans) but at some point i'm just going to want to watch the game. Thoughts?

wT still manages to sit in the student section, so I bet her answer will be better. but I don't think you'll face actual abuse unless you bring it on yourself. Or encourage it. The few times it's been "intervened"- someone reacts to someone else, and it escallates. Minnesota may be a rival, but not a heated one like MSU is, so it's more likely that people will give you a hard time, but will enjoy the game right next to you.

The one thing I don't know- is that visitor section open to all visitors or just the family connected ones? Many visiting fans are up above us in section 26.

I hope you enjoy your visit to Yost and Ann Arbor.

pre/post game Food and drink: I think Mr. Spots is the perfect pre-game meal (great cheesesteaks and wings), but they do not serve alcohol. If you're looking for adult beverage and a meal within short walking distance to Yost, RUB barbeque and Quickie Burger are the options (I've never been to either).
If you're a micro-brew fan some downtown Ann Arbor selections are Jolly Pumpkin (try their sour beers), Grizzly Peak and Arbor Brewing Company. Ashleys and The Arena (bar, not Yost) will have a large selection of beers including local stuff but don't brew their own like the previously mentioned establishments.

At the arena - watch the game. Be in your seat with around 5 minutes left in the 2nd intermission (if you like seeing a crowd "dance", it's kindda cool). The food at the rink is nothing to write home about (I'm a fan of the cinnamon roasted almonds but that's about it). The trophy/history cases in the North end of the rink (front 'lobby' area) are pretty cool. Feel free to admire the plethora of banners hanging from the rafters.

Tickets - I think the section behind the visiting bench is just families/those who get their tickets through connections with the team. Most visiting fans are usually in the top of the section alfa sits in (sec. 26). I do not know that there is a "designated" away team section other than the families. Supposedly due to the B1G, tickets are not sold through the visiting school anymore. So there won't be an x number of seats for the game at Yost being sold through the opponent's athletic department, as there was in previous years.

Visitor section, see above. As for the student section, expect some verbal abuse, mostly a good natured ribbing. If you dish out crap, you'll get it in return. After the puck drops, most of the students will be watching the game and ignoring you (unless you give them reason not to). Also, the student section will stand all game, so if you want to sit down, buy a ticket elsewhere.

Any online video feed of the game Friday night for those of us who can't make it to AA?

I just checked the broadcast schedule and it is Comcast Local so that means there will NOT be anything streamed online.

Spath is reporting on the Rivals board that Racine will not be playing this weekend- groin injury.

Okay if you are going to send him away from the immediate area, Fraser's, Good Time Charley's, and the Brown Jug are about as close to a "Don't miss" establishment as you can get. Another sports bar beside "The Arena" is Scorekeepers.

You are correct - the ones behind the visitor bench are obtained through the visiting team. To the best of my knowledge (20+ year history) there never has been a "Designated" visiting team section other than the visiting teams allotment sold through the visiting team's Athletic Department. In the past few seasons after they were moved across the ice from sect. 18 there has been a block in Sect. 6. I'll have to remember to check there Friday.

REALLY?!?! Do you have that from a reliable source? I was under the impression that the B1G required a certain # or % to be allotted to the visiting team.

I figured that would likely be the case when I read the game recap that it was a groin injury. By the accounts it seems Nagelvoort did a good job stepping in. We just might have a "Goalie controversy" (the good kind) on our hands. We'll see this weekend.

Hoepfully Zach continues to play with confidence.

On a related note- it's interesting that we have years where the incoming Freshman goalie really struggles, and others were that does not happen. Just as interesting- when that Freshman shows some serious playing ability later. Makes me wonder about the impact of team chemistry on incoming goalies.

That had always been the case, and it may still be true for football. But starting this season it is not true for hockey. Confirmed by Michigan's ticket office when I tried to by @ UNH tickets and @ Penn State tickets. Confirmed by Penn State's ticket office when I was buying aforementioned @PSU tickets.

Nagelvoort looked good. He gave up some huge rebounds, but luckily UNH didn't capitalize on them. I was very impressed with his play at UNH (and against Waterloo). I suspect that if he continues to play that well, Racine will have to fight to get the job back.

.

Thanks to all for the hospitality and suggestions. I really appreciate the sports bar suggestions, as I need a place to watch the Sox tonight and tomorrow. Thanks again.
