Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

You guys are funny worrying about the crowd and what it means.

It's pretty clear even here that interest in college hockey isn't super strong- in spite of the B1G. It's game day, and the season is about to kick off- yet this thread was on the second page, and there are all of 3 replies to the game thread I started- one of which is my reply. That's not a lot of interest for the main gathering place for college hockey enthusiests.

Football, basketball, the economy, a not so awesome team, the school trying gouge fans, whatever. It is what it is, and I worry about schools that are trying to build rinks right now (and I know of one, for sure).

I'm dying here... If any of you have a sling box or something I will bribe you by any means necessary.
Any means necessary? Buy airfare and a ticket, come watch in person.
Sorry I can't help, I don't have Comcast and won't be home.

C'mon, Jim. You know (about) how long I've been sitting where I sit. Sunday looked a L-O-T different than it has for previous seasons exhibition games. Not so much for the number of empty seats but for who was sitting in the ones that were occupied. I'm convinced they didn't sell anywhere near as many student tickets this year for whatever reason. It may be price. It might be apathy after last season's let down. It might be the economic times. We'll learn a lot more tomorrow when the #4 ranked Eagles come calling.
I think streaker already said what I would have, which is that basketball is the season ticket to get these days for the students. I remember my brother having to decide when he was a student between basketball or hockey because he couldn't afford both along with football (which was a must have). That was in the late 90s when our hockey team was awesome, and my brother and his roommate chose hoops over hockey.
I'm not sure what the student section will look like this season, as was mentioned, you can't tell by an exhibition. We might not be able to tell on a Thursday night game either (even with it being BC). I do at least know that the core group in section 17 will always be there, and be loud.

Too much starch in your boxers, Eric? ;)

Nah, it's just funny to worry about. Joe needs to realize that you were not at the exhibition game, too. ;)
Unless you moved...

My vandal football board constantly complains about the crowd, and how few people donate to the Vandal Scholarship Fund- duh- they play bad football. That, and it's not as if that many people live in Northern Idaho. Michigan has a plethora of things to do, so it's not that shocking to see fewer come to hockey games that are not quite as fun when we are not winning as much.

That was a fun game to watch- lots of up and down passing, good cycling, mostly clean play.

I could handle watching those two teams play more often.

Much, much better play than Sunday. Still very high energy, but better passing good hustle, and winning the battles in the corners. Very nice.

A little over 5K in attendance. ***.

Didn't seem like it on TV. Regardless, Michigan looked really good. If they play like this all the time, they will win the conference.

I just want more. More hockey now. I'm ****ed the game Saturday will be going on while the football game will be on. Football wins priority over hockey.

Also some TV news:

@ RIT will be on Timer Warner Sports - New York
New Hampshire series will be on Fox College Sports
Friday night game of the @ UNO series will be on CBS Sports Network
Friday night game of the home series with wisconsin will be on NBC Sports Network.

So basically, all but one of Michigan's will be televised this season.

What happened to the team I saw on Sunday? Great game last night, let's hope they can keep the ball rolling.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Well Joe, I am kinda agreeing with you (see my last point.) The students have been dwindling for the last five seasons because of higher tix prices and some perceived azz burn for the athletic dept on some policies. So, they are selling tix to the general public... but I wouldn't judge the turnout solely from the exhibitions. Keep in mind, the students are having to choose between football/hockey/basketball with the latter the most popular ticket now- and the general malaise for hockey created by the lack of domination (not necessarily success) and football. JMHO.

The student attendance was a little better last night but there was still a sharp demarcation between the areas occupied by those who appeared to be students (age, standing for entire game, etc.) and the others. Two or three sections appeared to be split, students in the top half, others in the lower half.

I asked around some of the arena staff last night and they confirmed there were a significant reduction in student season ticket sales. Some of it was a reduction in the number available but also a drop off in interest.

I don't know where Sunday's team went and I don't want to see them again. Last night was fun. The intensity they came out with in the 1st was awesome. We'll see how they do on the road tomorrow.

Well Jim, now that you brought up dissatisfaction with certain decisions made by pizza man's team, they REALLY got to me last year with how they handled the seat reassignment. I came within an eyelash of dropping my basketball tix after 35+ years. Suffice it to say when Brandon leaves it will be one of the best days of my life!

Well, I think that is where the students are migrating to. If the team plays like it did last night, we'll get more student interest. About 1500+ below capacity... and the message to the AD is loud and clear. But, I think the pricing saturation point has been reached regardless of the schedule and the talent we get to see.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

4four4- did you happen to see the game?

If you did- do you play a fast paced skill game like BC does? I'm hoping so- not that last nights game would be an indicator that we would be better than you, but more that the game was a whole lot of fun to watch. Amazing flow, going up and down the ice, crisp passing, hard checks- but no real interference, and not really a trap to be seen by either squad. If B1G play is like that, it WILL make college hockey on TV fun to watch, and should bring more eyes. The game really kept everyone glued to the ice.

Hope we get to see more of that all season.

You will like playing against the Gophers, we usually have a good skating, puck possession type team that likes to go up and down the rink.

Now Bucky on the other hand, can you say trap. ;)

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

I think they were only about 700 below capacity. Remember how much capacity changed when they took out seats during the summer of 2012; It is now 5800.

Yup, you are correct, but like Bluevox mentioned... the attendance was light for this caliber of game. Hopefully we get a full house for BU and UML.

Re: Michigan Wolverines 2013-14 Season Thread: The B1G Time

Seats sold versus butts in seats. Offcially, it was 700 below capacity, but my guess is there were a lot of no shows.

Sure, that's the correct distinction; I understood streaker to be referring to the "official" attendance, and not the number of butts in seats. Personally, from the south endzone it looked like the student section was packed, but the west sideline was very hit-and-miss. Either way, the empty seats are much more visible now that the seating area background color is bare aluminium (sponsored by Delta Airlines) instead of blue (sponsored by Toyota).
