Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Wow.

I mean WOW.

I knew the offense was playing well, but who would have expected a 2:10 collapse by Miami that got us out 4-0? Well, that wasn't really a collapse- they didn't do too many things wrong... But what an incredible run by Michigan- just super solid passing, movement, and creativity. Amazing.

So very nice to see Treias to get a goal- it's been a long time since he did that. First goal in 14 games and only 2nd in 23.

All 3 of those goals were set up by great passes. Good Luck Tomorrow

Thanks-too bad the Bucks lost- Michigan doesn't match up well with Notre Dame, really had our number this season. Plus there is the Jackson Factor.

Lunatic better have his four leaf clover and voodoo pins ready. If Michigan wins and BU wins, WMU is OUT. And to add insult to injury, DeKeyser is ready to sign with the Wings.

I would love DeKeyser to sign with the Wings. The better team won both games today. I am happy with the progress the Buckeyes made this year. Looking forward to the Big next year. Have you heard anything about both Ohio State/Michigan series being Friday in AA and Monday in Columbus?

No- the schedule talk is pretty limited right now, especially with all of the nc games up in the air. I'm sure we'll be on top of it come this summer.

Both scenarios for tomorrow have Western Michigan as the last team out. #16 in the PWR, with Canisius grabbing the AQ for Atlantic Hockey, outside the top 16.

Something appropriate, I suppose, about the last CCHA game coming down to a matchup between Red's Michigan and Red's kryptonite, Jeff Jackson. Two of the three most successful coaches in CCHA history.

Three years ago Michigan put together the excellent form it had inconsistently flashed throughout the season to beat Miami and then knock down an overwhelmed Northern Michigan club. Now, a Michigan team that had shown no signs of quality whatsoever for most of the season crushes Miami and then takes on Notre Dame, by whom it is owned.

It's not over yet. But it's a lot of fun.

I've asked this of some others, but I'll throw it out here: is Andrew Copp the new Jed Ortmeyer? I haven't seen the team up close, but everything I can glean suggests that he has become a leader and a lynchpin player on an improving team.

Western is done regardless of what happens. I love it, we ended Western's season. Ending spartys season 4 years ago was more fun but this works. Now all that is left to do is beat rudy. Call me an optimist but I think that we stand a good chance today.

Yeah, as they mentioned below, we were out when OSU lost to the dames. We needed OSU to win, miami to win, and a host of other unlikely scenarios. Oh well.

Is that true about Dekeyser going to the wings? I figure hes gone after this year, but hadn't heard about a particular team. I know the wings have shown a lot of interest and god knows they need the help on D. It'd be nice for him to stay local.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

I don’t want to start another discussion about Red’s plans – and I hope he stays coaching as long as he’s able - but I have to wonder if his decision to keep on coaching is affected by the 22-year tournament streak.

To clarify, I mean that if the Wolverines had been eliminated in 2010, and the streak had ended at 19 seasons, I have to think Red would be a little more willing to hang it up and retire. Consider this hypothetical: If he retired with the tournament streak unbroken, and the very next season saw the streak end, he might feel in an odd way – and albeit very indirectly – responsible for denying his beloved program a slightly higher place in NCAA record-book glory.

It’s just a thought that occurred to me, here on the morning of the game that decides whether the streak will continue.

One of last night’s stats generated a similar question. Red needs only about 13 or 14 more wins to overtake Comley’s 4th place in the all-time winningest coach list. It’s only natural to assume he’d like to move past that spot on the list!

Of course, he’s human like the rest of us, so health and family will certainly figure most prominent in his career decisions, but I am curious if Red ever spoke publicly of these two factors affecting his decision.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

WTW
That all assumes that 1) Red really worries about his preception at this point. And 2) ending the streak "hurts" where his program will be in the NCAA record book.

19, 22, 26- it's not as if the next team is anywhere close, and I think it's more a measure to Red that what he is doing is working.

As for overall wins- while it's nice to compare Red against Rick, Gerry, Jack, and even Ron- we all have to bear in mind that those guys are carreer coaches, Red had a good pro hockey carreer and a few good years as an NHL coach before coming to Michigan to start. One really can't compare his 30 to Jack's 40 or Ron's close to 40.

But where his place in history will be the streak (at all), pulling a dead Michigan program from the brink to the top, and winning 2 NCs. So with that, this is Red doing what he wants to do.

IMHO.

I've made that comparison as well. The hustle and dedication on EVERY shift reminds me of Jed-O. Even when we were playing poorly, and the whole team dragged, Copp was out there working his butt off.

I would not be surprised if we see Copp as a 2 year captain.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the updates, guys. I failed to look at the predictor before posting, was too lazy to change it. Too bad for WMU. Not my favorite program, but for the quality of the tournament I thought they would be a better choice than another AHA team or some other bubble teams. But, those are the rules- win the conference tourney, get in. After all, we can't talk out of both sides of our mouth. Wisconsin and Union earned their way in, too- hopefully Michigan can at Yale's expense.

As far as Red: He has often said that as long as he is feeling good and the program is where he expects it to be, he will coach. He enjoys doing it and he still can reach the guys he brings in. I imagine that records don't mean much to him, but he has said to me before that he regrets not winning more NC's with some of the talent he has had. He wasn't a proponent of the B1G Ten conference, he preferred that the CCHA stay intact and that they form a separate division within the CCHA for OSU, Michigan, MSU and Penn State. I don't know all the logistics since two other teams would also have to be placed in to make it an even six in each division. At least that was his thinking.

But now that there is a separate conference, he is probably eager to coach against Minn/Wis since he only played against them in the WCHA. (He never coached in the WCHA when Michigan was there.)

I don't know what else you can say, he has pretty much done it all, won it all. He's coached Hobey winners, won championships and did it the right way.

As far as DeKeyser- the Freep writer has a piece on how the Wings are pursuing him and making it sound like he could step into the lineup and get top four minutes right away. It's up to Danny to decide since no team can pay him more than another. Good luck to him.

Last: as far as Copp- the kid is just so mature for his age. I didn't realize that he was chased by several MAC schools for football as a QB. His demeanor is so business like, so ho-hum. When you talk to him he is very humble, soft spoken. Yes, he is Captain material, no doubt. Then again, I said the same thing about Zach Hyman, too. We'll see. Both are quality kids that have different roles.

Re: Michigan Wolverines: 2012-2013 Season thread!!!!!!!

Well, that sucked. Thus ends our season for the first time in 23 years. Ugh.

ND's defense was just too overwhelming for our offense to get anything. And they dug the hole so very deep during the season.

After a while trying to get through that neutral zone, you could tell that it took a lot mentally and physically out of the team. And so very few shots. We were dominated on both ends of the ice. It was frustrating to see Truba badly miss coverage for the second night in a row to lead to a goal- this one far more important than last night.

Sucks to say it, but there's next year.

I just got back from the Joe. You saw pretty much what I saw.

Michigan came out buzzing and dominated for about 3 minutes, looking like the much faster team. Then ND started to get into our zone, and it took FOREVER to get out. Their 2 man forecheck scheme frustrated us all night. They imposed their superior size on us very well. And then the penalties started, meaning even more time in our own zone. We defended valiantly all night (both non-empty-net goals were set up by opportunistic bounces, IMO), much better than earlier this year. But it took a piece out of the players.

On the other end, like you said, they frustrated us in the neutral zone. They stood up on the blue line and dared us to play dump-and-chase. Michigan has never been a dump-and-chase team, and when we were forced to try, again, Notre Dame's superior size meant that they won more battles than they lost. It was the perfect plan.

By the third period, we were out of gas. I can see why we lost to them 5 times this year. It's a bad matchup for us. Congrats to ND. They could make the Frozen Four.

So, did it hurt to lose? Yes, a little bit. We were within 30 minutes of the great escape. But I suspect that most of us had braced ourselves months ago for the end of the 22 year streak. The bottom line is, if this team had played up to its potential all year and hadn't done things like losing 3 in a row to UAF and BGSU, we wouldn't have have been in this desperate situation.

On the positive side, the winning streak at the end of the year gives me confidence that Red has the ship back on course and this will not be a 2-3 year rebuilding project. We'll make the tourney again next year.

And while I'd rather be watching the hockey team, at least we'll have bouncyball to watch next weekend. Funny how things go in cycles...last time we missed the hockey tournament was at the peak of Michigan basketball, right between the 1989 national championship and the Fab Five. Now the BB team is back in the sweet 16 for the first time in eons just as hockey is down again...
