Yeah, my timeline was off a couple years. I guess I shouldn't have made it sound like he would be fired, I definitely meant more "persuaded to retire" because he is one of the greats. The difference between Red and Mason, this season at least, is that Mason left with one of the top teams in the nation. Has Red lost this team? I don't think so. The last few games I've seen have been concerning though. I don't recall anything bad happening during the 7-2 blowout at Munn, but starting the since the GLI you guys have had the punch from the bench against Tech, the elbow by your captain versus State (which really made no sense because you had the lead), and then another unnecessary hit against BGSU. Maybe the frustration is starting to surface.

As for Comley, his tenure seemed to go like this:
1) "Awesome, I'm at a big time school, don't need to try anymore."
2) "Oh crap, looks like just being at a Big Ten school doesn't automatically get you players."
3) "Ok, went out and tried. Got my squad now."
4) "Yay! Championship!"
5) "Time to sit back and let this new brand of success bring in the recruits."
6) "Wait? I still have to try? Ah forget it, I'm just gonna sit here until they ask me to leave."

No one is going to roll out the excuse wagon, either. Kids leave early. Injuries happen. Players slump. Some kids are diamonds, some are stones. The last few years we have had our share of rocks. The incoming class is *suppose* to have some dynamite offensive talent to compliment the team that mostly will be composed of grinders. Our problem will be the blue line and in net- if Merrill leaves and a few others bolt. Rutledge apparently wasn't ready for the big time and has been a complete flop. That will be the largest cavern to fill, and it won't be done soon. We may have to live with the rent-a-goalie situation for two more seasons.

Aside from that, losing stinks... but even worse than that are the kids that lay down and dog it after running into some adversity. Fans won't tolerate it and there is only so much coaching that can be done to cure that. That's a character issue that you can't always sniff out when recruiting. I am disappointed in our leadership, especially with the nonsense on the ice lately .Treais' and Lynch's act was cowardly. (Moffie I can forgive, the Tech kid not only hotdogged it in front of the bench but tossed up snow at the bench which incited Moffie.)
Berenson truly enjoys coaching and wants to stay on, but another season like this one may make him rethink that- especially if Brandon starts seeing a revenue decline and rumblings from bluehair blues.

Our fans are spoiled, no doubt and are getting some of the dirt they have dished out. The rainbow is fading a little, so a little rain won't hurt if it means a return to the hunger and enthusiasm we use to have. Many programs have gone through it, it wasn't going to last forever.

That's very true for me. So a lot of the faults are amplified by history and the expectations based off of that. My first season was 90-91, which was the first season of the NCAA streak. It was shorty after that when we actually made the Frozen Four.

Even for this season, I would not expect any real "please retire" movements going on. Could even loose the vast majority of the final games, and I don't think that would happen. Being that Boston, Minnesota, North Dakota, BC, etc- all had their "years"- this was inevitable.

What I really don't like is my one desire watching the team- solid improvemt + hard work. With the players Red and Co can put together, if that happens, we will do quite well. This season, we started slow, which has happened before, got a little worse, which happens but is rare, and then not gotten any better- which I've never seen to this degree. Has Red lost the team? I don't know. It took me 2 seasons before I was sure that the coach at my alma mater did, and then he stayed on 2 more seasons before getting fired this past season. Red has had issues in the past, sure. But he's also been able to have incredible seasons after those- which tells me that he may lose players that are key, but NOT the team.

Doing it this season sucks a little more- since this is the last CCHA season. But it happens.

Over in EL Anastos probably has at least two or three more years before he gets some heat, just due to the fact everyone is happy Comley is gone. But Red, he's 73. He's a legend, but he's also 73. Is there any talk out of AA that if this season continues to be disastrous they make look for someone else to start the new era in the BTHC?

Even though we're rivals I would hate to ever see Red go. He's one of the most respected coaches in college hockey and it wouldn't seem like Michigan hockey without him.

She's an amazing coach. Keep in mind, Red had to clean up the huge mess left that was taking place since '65 so his beginning to his Michigan career wasn't pretty.

Yeah but we all know what he's done since. When Red ever kicks the bucket they'll fly all the flags on campus half mast for a week.

well..

Highlight of the game- DuBlois play where he held onto the puck, was paitent, passed to Guptil who scored. Great play.

Other than that, wow.

Funny thing- our goal to registered shots wasn't bad. We were right on a goal per 5 shots. But I told my wife- somewhere between 3-4 min left- we had 18 shots, and I said we will score somewhere around 20 shots, but I didn't think that we could put 25 shots up. So what happened? We scored at shot 23, and didn't put another up. If we can just put pucks on the goalie, it wouldn't be too bad.

OTOH, letting in 5 goals was, well, you know the drill by now. And the goalies didn't really steal anything, either.

sigh.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when watching the game against BG Red seemed more resigned to what was happening. He always used to get so ticked about a loss you could easily see the veins stand out on his temples 100 feet away!

I think this team is almost resigned to the fact that even if they score three or four goals, that they are going to let in 4 or 5. The goaltending, IMO, is the single most glaring issue on this team (and there are quite a few issues mind you). The game last night was a perfect example, not one big save was made all night (like Tuesday as well), and in reality, in the games I have seen, save for a few early games, the goaltending is really really costing this team, and it affects them greatly.

The two signee defections the past few years have caught up with them, this is the first time i can remember not having a solid goalie, in fact, in about 20 + years (save a couple of shaky seasons with Hogan/Sauer).

This has been a tough year, but we have been spolied for 20 + years will high levels of success, so let's hope it is a 1 year aberration.

Brian Wiseman was running the team at the end of the game last night. Just an observation.

As far as "bookends" he will have to string 4-6 years like this together. Red took over in 1984 and didn't make the NCAA tourney until 1991. Just wishful thinking for haters.

And so I don't get yelled at for spamming I'll throw a Michigan Hockey observation out there. Coach Berenson has lived Michigan Hockey, Blue ice is what keeps him young. With this season being so God-awful (by Michigan standards) and Coach not finishing the game, streaker mentioned that Wiseman was running the team at the end of the night, do you think Coach has given up? It's a nasty thought but maybe Coach retires after this year? I know that he has 3 years left under contract but technically those that contract doesn't begin until after this season. Michigan may decide just to void that contract, with Coach's permission of course, and allow Coach to ride off into the sun-set? I seriously hope that isn't the case but you can tell this season is wearing on him. I talked with Gordie (Coach's son) several years ago and asked him about his Dad. Gordie said that his Dad will keep Coaching until it isn't fun anymore. Coach Berenson doesn't appear to be having much fun currently.

I can't believe I'm asking this question but here it goes-

Who would Michigan go after should Red retire? I'm guessing Mel Pearson would be the #1, and then maybe Jeff Blashill as a #2?

So many issues indeed...

Janecyk was awful tonight (second game vs. Alaska). I arrived late and missed the first goal against us, but the 2nd and especially the 4th were very soft (the 4th reminded me of a goal given up in my son's Mite game on Friday, not a college goal), and, while the defensemen were at part to blame for leaving the Alaska shooter open on the 3rd, Janecyk had a clear view and still should have had it.

The offense actually generates a lot of opportunities. What we're lacking on offense is a sniper, a reliable goal scorer, someone who finishes those opportunities regularly. We don't have one. In the past, we've often had 2.

We all know that the defense is bad. Trouba is a a maddening player. I saw him make a couple great plays that showed his potential, but he also had 3 penalties and made some absolutely awful passes. Simple cross-the-blue-line pass to Merrill, he put it over the line. They regrouped, went back in, same thing happened not 30 seconds later.

So, our recruitment list (yes, I'm already talking about next year) consists of a top-notch goalscorer, a top-notch goalie, and, given that our defensive corps is already stretched thin and that Merrill probably won't want to stick around another year for the rebuilding, a defensive leader and at least two other competent defensemen. No competition for those types of players at all! Michigan has the cachet to pull it off, but it won't be easy.

The good news is that the Big Ten Network League should actually be easier than the CCHA next year.

I don't know what to make of this team. Tuesday against Bowling Greeen it looked like they weren't even trying. This weekend against Alaska it seemed they were at least putting effort into it.
Normally I'd look at wins in the season and say, "look, we can beat anyone", but the record looks more like everyone wins a game now and then.
With the injured defense and the results thus far, it's hard to have hope and optimism. The team heads to Lake State this weekend where we continue to hope for our first road win.
