Re: Michigan Wolverines 2011-2012 hockey thread
the worst officiating I've ever seen
That's quite a statement. Admittedly I haven't seen as many games in the recent years as you, but I can't argue with you. That Wilkins travesty from the UM-OSU CCHA semifinal in '02 looks tame by comparison. Anyone ever recall Red being so visibly upset about officiating before?
Speaking of 2002, does this year remind anyone else of that season? Plagued with mediocrity mid-season, the streak in serious jeopardy, missing its best player for a big chunk of the year, catching fire down the stretch, youth learning to play together... pleasantly familiar. Some key differences, though. No Ortmeyer, and instead of Blackburn in goal we have Sean Astin.
Which situation would you consider more implausible: Predicting on 12/1/11 that Michigan would be in position for a #1 seed by the first week of February... or predicting two years ago that the Yost fans would be chanting "Hobey Baker" at Shawn Hunwick, and have a legitimate argument? Explaining Hunwick to non-hockey followers continues to grow more complicated, since "Rudy" doesn't really describe everything Hunwick has been central to in the last two seasons. While out visiting bus families this morning I vainly attempted to describe Hunwick to my friend who was with me. "See, it's like Rudy--walk-on who almost didn't come to Michigan, wasn't supposed to play, Michigan having lousy season, starter got hurt, THEN Michigan starts winning, THEN they sweep MSU at Munn, knocking them out of the tournament, THEN they win the conference and keep the streak alive, THEN blahblahblahblah."
Here's hoping I have a few more THENs to add. As long as we have Hunwick in goal, we have a chance at #10, right? Who woulda believed we'd be saying that a couple of years ago?
