Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

It's inevitable that you'll see air service to the UP reduced to just Marquette, and rightfully so. It's just going to take a rewrite or complete repeal of the Essential Air Service subsidy.

EAS Map
Some of those locations are incredibly stupid. Like the one a stone's throw from Las Vegas, or the one that looks to be between Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. What is the point of subsidizing flying to those places? Just another waste of our money, like 95% of what the **** government does.

The map is for counties that contain an airport (or more) that are EAS subsidized.

The AZ county that is a "stones throw" from Las Vegas is Mohave County.

This looks to be the airport in question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingman_Airport_(Arizona)
Kingman is two hours to Las Vegas, two and a half hours to Flagstaff.

Also interesting, is that Coconino County, which is where Flagstaff is, also has an EAS subsidized airport.

Is it possible the MAC is getting new boards? While drivin by the SDC, it looks like there are pallets of new boards sitting in the parking lot....

Those are probably the ones that were removed as they get ready to replace the ice floor.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I don't really know what will happen air service wise. The politicians love to crow about this as a way to show they are doing something for the community, reference carl levin's newsletter last month trumpeting EAS for Manistee. But if we, as a society, are serious about balancing the budget then the subsidy will have to go.
Even if it does, it's possible that Houghton can be served, we'll see, chances are about 50-50 if you ask me. Certainly Marquette is a much easier sell to the airlines.
Over the past few years the connections to Houghton have been so bad that I typically fly into MQt and drive up anyway, but it is a terrible waste of money if you consider how much it costs the university to drive everyone to MQT first.

Random thoughts here. but just to see if I am on the right page, the NCHC has an office in C Springs, correct?, however there is no staff and the commish works out of his house ? correct? So why have an office and a mailing address if there is no staff? Does anyone even answer the phone or does it just ring thru to the cc Ad's office?

Say, do you perchance have a yearbook from Mel's playing days? I need some info...

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

I have a couple from that era, but not all of them. Shoot me an email with what you want to know and I'll do my best. Yearbooks in the 1970s and 1980s were slightly thicker than a game program so the amount of info contained is nowhere near what they were publishing the last few years before hard copy yearbooks went the way of the Dodo.

You aren't really Frank Wilson are you? ;) He posted several times on Hockey-L over the weekend asking about old WCHA and CCHA media guides.

As far as I know I am not. In fact I'm pretty sure that I am not as he has asked me for a few things over the years.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

Something to keep an eye on, Jake Kauppila's little brother was taken in the USHL future draft and could be on the Huskies' radar.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread

There are rumors floating around that Calumet's Ben Storm is getting some interest by the hockey program. I know he has MTU football opportunities for sure. Does anyone know any specifics regarding his hockey opportunities?

Has he been drafted by any Junior program? Can't find anything definitive online. Did find this old gazette article.

I know he has improved quite a bit over the years and I think he can reach half way across the ice. He looked pretty good in the games I saw this year.

Always good to have some local talent on the team

An antique shop up in Calumet had a stack of old Husky Hockey programs dating back to the early 70s. I haven't been in there in a few months, but I'd bet they're still there. The shop is on Fifth Street kitty corner from the L&L Bar, if I remember correctly.
