MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

The problem with sweden is that as soon as they get wind of a player being recruited they start to play him a few games in the SEL and put him on the roster even if they have no intention whatsoever of playing him long term. So it's a bit of a crap shoot to get them here.

Wouldnt you rather go to Colorado Springs than Grand Forks?
Certainly and there is more media in the Springs too. Still no one will be there much due to the world cup. It most likely will get 1 column inch on page 6 of the globe.

Or because newspapers are dying and are operating on thin budgets. If we any college hockey recieved 1 column in on page 6 of the globe that would be amazing.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

I'm wondering what Pearson's take on re-alignment is. I forget how his hire and the BIG 6 (or are they the small 6 now that there is a new "big six or super six?) started. I have to believe that coaches around the leagues new some of this was likely. Does it change recruiting now? For better or worse? I guess it comes down to how much of our recruiting pitch was centered around playing in the strongest (apologies to those out east who disagree) conference.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Did anyone watch the conference live? Any gems in there worth repeating or will it be all PC speak and handshakes for the next two years until they are really off on their own and then they can talk themselves up and how the WCHA was killing their program and something HAD to be done? Anyone taking odds that one of the teams gets talked off the ledge and this thing breaks up before it comes to be in 2013? Any chance UMD gets into this conference without their recent national title? Any chance the CCHA survives beyond 2012 without at least one new school promising to jump to D-I in the future?

I would love to see UAA and UAF get in the same conference. One school could pay for airfare and the other could pay room and board for the visiting team for the 5 days in between back-to-back weekend series. Better yet, make the first series a Sat-Sun to save one day on the trip.

Just thinking out loud in written form...

Bruce needs to go and last week. The strong hints of this were posted on the DU thread back in november.

Even if he knew about it what could he do?

On another note, aside from the obvious slap in the face of "we're too good to play with you anymore", I'm not really that upset about the whole thing. No one complains that Tech isn't D1 in other sports. We go and support the team and hope they are the best among peers. So we're in a comparitively weaker WCHA now. If we're competative and win a league title every few years among whose left, that's all you can do. And I think playing 4 games against each team every year is a plus.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

While initially the breakaway was a shock, the more they (the NCHA) reveal the less upset I am. Call me biased, but they are really looking like boobs. For example,

www.nchc.org belongs to the National Coalition on Health Care
www.nchc.com belongs to a law firm.

Their PR has been laughable and incomprehensible for a group so concerned with the quality of their "branding."

They admit that discussions started long before their recent pledge of recommitment to the WCHA. Quality of character - not.

Their "like-mindedness" really means "like-mindedness lately." Most of us can remember times when CC, DU, and UMD were door-mats. UND has had their down years. Many of us can remember when MU and UNO didn't even have hockey programs.

Most people seem to be laughing at them. The only ones impressed seem to be themselves.

No need to keep bashing them; they seem capable of self-mutilation all by themselves.

I say, let's celebrate the new WCHA. MTU is now the only founding member of the league. Let's be LEADERS. Pee on these other guys. Let's move on.

Better be careful with that one, might get a cease and desist letter from the B1G Mistake.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

From one LSSU fan . . . I am hoping Tech takes an active lead in the recreation of the college hockey landscape. Tech has the credibility, in my opinion, to have a real impact on the upcoming landscape. I would prefer to see Tech take the lead rather than, say, some place like SCSU or anything (and I mean ANYTHING) from the meaningless joke CCHA.

And, hopefully, the leaders (hee hee, leaders . . .) at LSSU are smart enough to engage Tech, so that when Tech moves, it takes LSSU with them.

Just my opinion, but the remaining schools are going to have to go through Tech when all is said and done.

It's post like this that make Tech fans the class of college hockey. Well done good sir!

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

Just an observation and question here.... With the way it looks like the cards will fall, how much does Tech stand to lose by not getting a check from the Final Five? With the new look WCHA, it seems that all the schools will be on the same ground in that respect since NMU or UA never had a substantial playoff check, and the WCHA teams are in the same boat... Is losing that money really going to be a tough pill to swallow? Your average attendance seems to be similar to NMU's and we've been able to become self sustaining based on that... Do you all foresee any major downfalls from this shift in income?

It's just something I have seen brought up here a few times and am curious about... To me it seems like you are going from a situation where you had to spend $10 to be competitive to a deal where $6-7 works...

Re: MICHIGAN TECH OFFSEASON THREAD II: The Winning has started

It's my opinion that the current ticket price is going to be pretty fair for whatever the new-look WCHA ends up being. Houghton is a hockey community - when Tech starts winning more consistently, the cost will be worth it, and people will show up again.

Meanwhile, I'd expect the B1G and the new NCHC teams to raise prices after the split.
