Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

Maybe it's just the full rides that can't be taken, but partials can. Glad that there is some motivation to compete though.

There's no doubt that full 4-year offers are common at the schools that get good players. Those promises have rarely been made here.

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

I thought that once they gave a scholarship, the school was required to honor it by providing the education, but if the player doesn't cut it on the ice (field, court, etc), they could cut them from the team. I would think that the scholarship would still count against that teams total allowed by the NCAA, but who knows with how convoluted the NCAA is.

There is not a single scholarship in the entire country that is guaranteed for more than one year at a time. Technically speaking, everything is year to year. Now, if a given coach has verbally promised something over the course of a players career and changes his mind later...that is certainly allowed but hurts the coach's credibility down the road. A new coach really doesn't have that issue since he didn't make those promises. Many of the players on the current roster should be a little worried.

well said. that was really the point I wanted to get at.

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

FYI, I have been "informed" (and I don't think he'll mind if I reveal this part of his info), that thanks to multiple complaints from players' parents about the poor quality of the Huskies Live feed, the camera system has been upgraded and should be much improved this fall. :)

Huskyfan can vouch for the source.

vouched for.

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

So with the new coach, what's the chance of a strategic marketing effort to get students excited about the team again?

Strategic marketing effort? Did I just say that?

Seriously though, the students have to come out. I understand that winning brings attendance, but if this is going to be the big turnaround, it will be a lot easier if the players aren't playing in front of an empty stadium. Although, I don't know what else can be done beyond free tickets. Maybe we start charging students to create the impression that the games are worth something.

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

Yeah, I've gotten a few reps from the MTU crowd here that would rather have me going on full bore about the Huskies football team or even the basketball teams than to deal with those two nimrods.

you're cool!

correct. Jamie was a nice guy who let players stay (Kevin Hatchey). I doubt Mel will do this. it will be perform or you're gone.

Eh, most teams have a 3rd string emergency goalie like Hachey was, I don't think we'll get away from that kind of situation. You don't want to have a real good goalie as your 3rd because you don't want to spend much, if any, of your alotted scholarships. A guy like Jordan Foote would be one that might get the ax, he was supposed to be a much better player than the piece of trash he ended up being.

oldish husky: maybe they should offer a 1/2 credit PE class for watching hockey, attend all games in a semester and get PE credit. Its just as much PE as the bowling or billiards classes are.

Joyce would offer free extra credit if you went to the game and brought your ticket stub in

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

Pretty much anyone who played on the 3rd and 4th lines this year should be bearing down on offseason training and gearing up for a serious battle for ice time, what with B. Pietila, Kero and (allegedly) D. Johnstone getting added to the mix of younger, more talented forwards.

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

there is excitement in the community. hopefully among the students too. that will help attendance alot! we can only hope for better marketing.

the point about Kevin Hatchey - who is a great guy - worked hard in practice - studied hard - all the right things - is that we had a 3rd string goalie on a 4 year scholarship. not many coaches will do that.

I'd expect EVERY line to be bearing down with a season like last year. Nothing less should be expected.

Oh yes, absolutely, but it's an especially big deal for guys like Witt, MacLeod, McCadden, Holmberg, etc. Guys who, if we had stayed healthy, would've been lucky to crack the fourth line.

I like holmberg but I wish to heck he would back check better.I also like McCadden, The others I think will be seen rarely unless they improve or find a niche they can fill as a speciality player.

Hey, it's tough to bowl a good game after having a couple! The Beer Frame is killer!

(yes, I took bowling for my PE class in college) :)

I took theory and organization of hockey. three times.

Beginning Skating. Once officially, and then I just kept showing up 4-5 times a semester for fun.

As for getting students back in to the arena, it's going to be a combined effort of the die-hards bringing friends and the Misfits recruiting. Anything beyond that is just the team starting to win again.
Speaking partially from prior experiences, perhaps contacting the International Programs and Services and having them organize more group events around attending the games would be something worth exploring. College sports are something kind of unique to the US, and having spoken with a good number of them last fall, they're interested in going but rather unfamiliar with the environment, or in some cases aren't even aware these types of things are going on because they're so far off their radar.
*shrugs* Just a thought.

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

Re: Economics of Liechtenstein

Contacting International Programs is a good idea. They could organize a group from the I-House dorm on the 2nd floor of West McNair.

The Misfits could also benefit from holding a couple of "Learn the Game" meetings, preferably led by a couple players and/or an assistant coach for credibility's sake.
