Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

you mean printed copy...it should still be available online right?

they say they are no longer "printing" (as opposed to publishing), so I would expect it to be online. I hope.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

So losing to teams you should be anihilating is ok, so long as you beat teams that should be of similar caliber?

Yes, winning Big Ten games will always take precedent over other games, at least that's what I tell myself so I can sleep at night.

Hey guys, can you help me? I am looking for the Tech hockey threads... seen them around anywhere?

I wish there was hockey to talk about, but my understanding is that there's this annoying season called "summer" where it actually gets warm outside, and half of the Copper Country is busy playing some game called "softball"?

;)

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

Its called casserole. You Michigan people are all weird

Minnesotans are weird too, they call it hotdish as well.

Seriously, couldn't any food that's hot be called hot dish? I just nuked a microwave burrito... hotdish!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

Check back in two months. Your #1 sign will be when the Monster starts posting about the results of D2 football games again, and ticking off most of our fanbase. ;)
Not to worry, I'll be fairly mild here this upcoming football season, other than GVSU at MTU weekend. Duluth fans should be "Concerned" however. I'm still ****ed about that game!!!

But he does that all the time, regardless of if its football season or not...
Not the results of games silly!! I know I'm crazy, but its not like I'm putting the whole GLIAC in to NCAA College Football 2008, playing that, and then posting those scores. :p I do have my limits. ;)

Hey guys, can you help me? I am looking for the Tech hockey threads... seen them around anywhere?
Hell, even I do try to keep it about Tech. The only talk about going to Ann Arbor around here to watch football should involve putting together a Bash at the Big House Version 2.0 :D

MTU alum; the coaches must love this after cutting him "because he doesn't have the skill or ability to play in the wcha". They have a great eye for talent.

Nothing new there, for whatever reason they have a long history of that. Case in point, back about 14 years ago one of the best high school goalies in the state Aho (first name long forgotten) played for Cabrini, who lost a thrilling 2ot (i think) game to Calumet in the semi finals. Aho wanted to go to /play for Tech. Couldn't get even the slightest interest out of them.

Calumet went on to beat Flint Powers something like 13-1 in the finals (in fact beat Powers two years in a row by large margins. The goalie for those Flint Powers teams..... Brian Rodgers. Who as you would have guessed by now ended up getting recruited and played for Tech.

So Tech didn't want one of the best goalies in the state at that time, but wanted the kid from the lesser program who got shelled in the finals and semi fianls two years straight......Go figure!

I think it's already been said when you brought this up a few months ago. The fact that he wasn't even getting much ice time in 10 games for Finlandia should tell you he was a very late bloomer at best, or perhaps just not a fit for NCAA hockey at any level.

14 years ago...when we were in the middle of the Bob Mancini/Tim Watters transition. That should tell you all you need to know right there.

13 points in 10 games with according to you not much ice time - "very late bloomer at best"? - "not fit for NCAA hockey at any level"?

"Trent (Daavettila) possesses the type speed and agility that is made for the ECHL," said Welsh.

Apparently these assets are fit for leagues a step above NCAA hockey but not the NCAA??

Are you one of Tech's coaches?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

Story on Gordic in the weekend Gazette.

HOUGHTON - Michigan Tech has had trouble scoring goals at times during the past couple of seasons.

The Huskies averaged two goals per game in 2007-08 and 1.63 goals per game last season. So Tech's coaches went out and added some more punch to their lineup with the signing of Milos Gordic.

"I'm just going to try and mix it up," Gordic said. "I'm going to play physical and work around the net where I can use my size to create more (scoring) opportunities."

Gordic spent the past three years playing for the Langley Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League. He netted 94 goals during his three seasons with the Chiefs.

Gordic, who had 13 goals in his first season, had 29 in year two and 42 last season. He finished with a total of 156 points in his three seasons with Langley.

"I just think it's a matter of confidence," Gordic said of his increase in goals. "As the years went on I got more confidence and my coaches got more confident.

"I just felt better with the puck."

Gordic is already an impressive physical specimen. The 19-year-old stands 6-foot-5 inches tall and weighs in at 200 even.

That size brings another facet to his game. Gordic is able to take the body and do the dirty work along the boards as well as score.

The one area of his game Gordic has been working on is his skating. And over the past several months, he's put in a lot of work on his skating.

"I've been doing a lot of sprints and squats," Gordic said of his skating work. "I'm just trying to get stronger in my legs and thighs."

And he can continue to improve on his strength and speed once he arrives at Tech. The Huskies' skating treadmill has helped others with their skating needs.

But the treadmill wasn't what drew Gordic to Tech. Gordic came to Houghton because he feels Tech's program will get him where he wants to be.

"Tech's program has all the tools to get me to become a professional hockey player," Gordic said. "I like the way the program is run.

"The coaches really try to push you."

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes

Nice article on Gordic. He certainly has put up some good numbers in jrs. Last years numbers were very good. More importanly he showed improvement each season, which is something coaches are always looking for. He has the size as well, especially if he fills out that frame with another 15 to 20 pounds.

But the key part of that to me was the emphasis on that he was/is really working on his skating.

So he has the skills (hands/scoring touch) and the size. The question becomes does he/will he have the skating skill needed to be a scorer at the DI level?

I look forward to seeing him play in October. Hopefully I like what I see.

Interesting - the articles the DMG has written sort of made it sound like he was riding the pine at Finlandia. They didn't really mention his brief success there.

Regardless, the gulf between D3 and D1 hockey is pretty big. Players like Rouleau are the exception (and Tech had previously shown interest in him anyway, but he tried to hold out for scholarship offer from NMU that never came).

So if he was lighting it up in D3 and enjoying himself, why didn't he stick around at Finlandia? Obviously something was amiss. It could be something as simple as wanting to major in engineering, so maybe he attempted to transfer to Tech, but the coaching staff decided he wasn't a fit for the team's style? Furthermore, perhaps he didn't get along with the coaches at either school.

You have to remember that just because someone has hockey skills, that doesn't make them a fit for every team out there. There are many other factors involved in recruiting players. When you're a team like Tech, you have to land guys willing to play as a team and buy into the coaching system. You can't go out and recruit a bunch of the next Oshies, Toews, Schroeders, Elliotts, Wiercochs, etc. and just win based on their talent. If you get the occasional top notch player who is willing to contribute to the team mentality and effort, great, but those players are going to be few and far between.

For whatever reason, Tech passed on this guy, and I'm sure that given his numbers in 10 games at Finlandia, it wasn't for lack of a tryout or two on his part. It was also JR's first season as our head coach, if I'm not mistaken. Odds are he was focusing on his initial 03-04 and 04-05 classes, and Daavettila just wasn't a fit in those plans.
