Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Screw It, Somebody Look Up The Cheat Codes
Trent Daavettila
2002-03 Finlandia University NCAA Games-10 G-3 A-10 P-13
13 points in 10 games with according to you not much ice time - "very late bloomer at best"? - "not fit for NCAA hockey at any level"?
"Trent (Daavettila) possesses the type speed and agility that is made for the ECHL," said Welsh.
Apparently these assets are fit for leagues a step above NCAA hockey but not the NCAA??
Are you one of Tech's coaches?
Interesting - the articles the DMG has written sort of made it sound like he was riding the pine at Finlandia. They didn't really mention his brief success there.
Regardless, the gulf between D3 and D1 hockey is pretty big. Players like Rouleau are the exception (and Tech had previously shown interest in him anyway, but he tried to hold out for scholarship offer from NMU that never came).
So if he was lighting it up in D3 and enjoying himself, why didn't he stick around at Finlandia? Obviously something was amiss. It could be something as simple as wanting to major in engineering, so maybe he attempted to transfer to Tech, but the coaching staff decided he wasn't a fit for the team's style? Furthermore, perhaps he didn't get along with the coaches at either school.
You have to remember that just because someone has hockey skills, that doesn't make them a fit for every team out there. There are many other factors involved in recruiting players. When you're a team like Tech, you have to land guys willing to play as a
team and buy into the coaching system. You can't go out and recruit a bunch of the next Oshies, Toews, Schroeders, Elliotts, Wiercochs, etc. and just win based on their talent. If you get the occasional top notch player who is willing to contribute to the team mentality and effort, great, but those players are going to be few and far between.
For whatever reason, Tech passed on this guy, and I'm sure that given his numbers in 10 games at Finlandia, it wasn't for lack of a tryout or two on his part. It was also JR's first season as our head coach, if I'm not mistaken. Odds are he was focusing on his initial 03-04 and 04-05 classes, and Daavettila just wasn't a fit in those plans.
