Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

There are always Michigan born players drafted and this year was no exception. This was one of the interesting stories of a first round draft pick from Michigan, Austin Watson to the Nashville Predators.

When Watson was 12 years old, his parents, struggling financially with the downturn in the auto industry in their home state of Michigan, packed up and moved to Florida, where Mike had a job opportunity in sales.
A gifted minor hockey player, Watson decided he would stay behind with his grandparents and play hockey and have a chance to play in top-level tournaments in Alaska and Quebec City. "The decision was basically mine," Watson said. Not yet a teenager, the decision wasn't based on "Will Austin Watson play in the NHL," but on wanting to continue to play with good friends at a high level. The playing was the easy part; the living apart from his ever-growing family for most of four years was less so.

Also Justin Florek of Marquette was taken by the Bruins. He currently plays for NMU.
Such a sad ending. I thought it was an inspirational story, not a tragedy.

And wtf was I thinking, what I originally meant to say is Michigan HS players. Totally said the wrong thing.

I haven't posted much lately, but its good to see some hockey talk in here. Here's an interesting story I found.

We really need to get our hands on those annoying things for the upcoming season at the SDC

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

I was more thinking the upcoming season in the Berry.

Welcome to 2002. :p We've had those for a long time in the student section, just not in any big enough number to be annoying. At most, there was maybe just a dozen at any given time.

Funny story about them, during the 2004 season we played LSSU on a very empty Thanksgiving weekend. During the Saturday night game, one fan who had been blowing on the horn intermittently during the game and during stoppages in play had the horn taken away during the second intermission.

Frank Anzalone consulted with the referees during both intermissions and read them the riot act from the NCAA rule book:
"Section 30.b: Spectators are not permitted to use artificial noisemakers, air horns or electronic amplifiers while the game is in progress."

So for the whole third period the fan, now hornless, yelled at Frank Anzalone during the game.

When LSSU returned that spring, we bought a blue horn from the NMU Bookstore, put green and gold ribbons on it, and attached a note that read: "To Crazy Frank, from your friends in Section 16," and left the horn on the visitors bench at the Berry before warmups. The LSSU assistants had a good laugh over it, but Frank chucked it in the direction of the trash can during warmups.

After rescuing the horn from the trash that night, we brought it to Taffy Able arena the next night and threw it on the LSSU bench, again just before warmups. Frank took it with him off the ice after warmups and we have never seen the horn since.

The term "Crazy Frank" was our term of endearment for him, for his antics mostly on the ice (down a goal and pulling your goalie with 12 minutes to go in the third...), but our radio guy DavyD was verbally accosted by him when he asked Frank about the term, and the horn. :D

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason II: We Won as Much Hardware as Ovechkin!!

Recent email from JR. I asked him a couple questions which I know will be of interest to every Tech fan:

1. What is the schedule of games for the trip to Europe? Unfortunately, my attendance is schedule and cost-prohibited (go figure), but I'd love to know which clubs we'll be playing so I can try and follow the results online in 5-6 weeks.

We depart on August 11th from Marquette, fly to Detroit, Amsterdam then on to Munich. We land then we will bus to Kaufbauren. We will play a game on the 13th 14th and 15th. We are off on the 16th and bus to St. Polten. On the 17th we play the Vienna Capitals in St. Polten. The 18th we depart for Klagenfurt and play a game there. We will spend the 19th in Munich and depart on the 20th. Dirk Hembroff will be broadcasting the games, most likely tape delayed. We will also have a blog on the athletics page detailing the trip.

2. My understanding is that the Superior Showcase won't be renewed for a third time. Is this true? I am pleased to see the non-conference series against St. Lawrence on our schedule for the upcoming season. Coupled with the end of the Showcase, I was wondering if this will reflect an opportunity for us to schedule a couple ECAC or perhaps even Hockey East opponents in the next few seasons.

This is the last year of the Superior Showcase. In 11-12 we play at SLU and we will play NMU twice. The CCHA doesn't have a league schedule yet so we have not finalized a date (makes it very tough). We will add an eastern non conference team. I would like to schedule some type of balance in our schedule. By balance, I mean that for the last seven years we have played a strength of schedule that has been in the top five and often one, two or three. We will always have a hard schedule with WCHA play and the GLI but we need more balance.

By "balance" I think he's politely hinting that he's looking for a series with a bottom-half HEA or ECAC team.

1. Thanks for the info on the dates. My uncle is a Tech alum, and he's currently living in Germany. I told him about the trip when it was first announced, and he was hoping to take my cousins to a game.

2. Good news all around--both for the end of the Showcase and for the series just down to two games. Now, the two coaching staffs and fan bases need to negotiate the terms of any kind of travelling trophy.

Losing fan-base buys the other fan-base sweet rolls from the Hilltop in L'Anse.

I'm opposed to serious hardware if it's only two games a year, because the series will often be a draw, and 'winning' trophies on tiebreaking technicalities like goal differential is lame.

Compensating for something with your signature? Small penis? Lack of intelligent or funny things to say? Herpes?

All I'm saying is, if I had herpes, no one with a small penis would be catching it. Size matters!

Ah, that is a good point. I didn't think about that one.

On to a slightly different topic now. I saw that a regional is being held in Green Bay in both 2011 and 2012. I know Tech is the host for the 2011 regional--is that also the case for 2012 as well? (And, yes, I did try asking this in the actual thread, but they're too busy kvetching about Worcester and which schools they think should host and curtains.)

Yes, Tech is hosting it both of those years.
The Resch Center in Green Bay will now host both the NCAA Division 1 men’s hockey Midwest Regional in 2011 and 2012. The 2012 award was handed out on Monday by the NCAA.

The Resch Center was chosen as one of four regional sites for the 2012 tournament, along with venues in Minneapolis, Bridgeport, Connecticutt, and Worcester, Massachusetts.

The 2011 Frozen Four will be held in St. Paul, while the 2012 Frozen four goes to Tampa, Florida.

The Green Bay (Resch Center) Midwest Regional will be hosted both in 2011 and 2012 by Michigan Tech University.

The word out of the paint store today is that College Avenue is now officially pothole free for the next few months.
