Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

It's Dieter Kochan again. I was wrong.

Bummer - After Patrick Roy blew up t the game last night I was hoping the Avs would fire him and Mel would talk him into a 12 step anger management program which included teaching young goalies in a quiet college town just South of Canada. Oh well. I'm sure Mel is confident with DK. I think just having someone who can focus on the goalies is a good thing. Wish it was Steve, but we'll roll with it.

It will be interesting to see how much time Dieter spends around the team, I heard from a good source that he was around maybe 5 hours a week last time.

Just fyi, for those planning on going, the Notre Dame series will be their home opener, unless you count their exhibition vs Guelph. they are at wmu the week before.

We were very lucky to land Steve for a couple years. A guy like Dieter is probably more the reality, and he's got over 150 AHL games under his belt, so there's nothing wrong with that as long as Mel is confident in him. Though I've heard a little bit of grumbling about his NMU ties.

That's also USC weekend for ND football. Wonder what their hockey attendance will be like with the Friday/Sunday format.

I don't care if his name is cudahey van overloop as long as the guy knows what he is doing and can teach and relate. We will miss Shields for sure though.

hard to say on attendance but i'd bet it's going to be pretty good.

I sure hope that Mel can keep him in check. The last time he tried to change Genoe instead of working with him and it hurt Kevin. I guess time will tell.

I don't think Kochan was the sole reason Genoe regressed. I think Kevin was pretty much setup to fail from the start. First, his junior hockey numbers weren't that spectacular, but six starts into his freshman year he was lauded as the next Teslak after a 48 save win at Duluth that proved to be an outlier. Second, he was tiny and stayed that way his four seasons at Tech, never really filling out his diminutive frame, so he was pretty easily beaten when our defense sold him out. Third, after that disastrous 195-ft. goal at Denver his sophomore year, I don't think anyone really trusted him anymore.

Grumbling about his NMU ties??? What Tech ties did Muckalt, Shields and Whitten have? Kochan is coming and donating his time to help Tech hockey. I'm sure was a line of qualified applicants a mile long. The grumblers should be thankful he's willing to help.

Did you buy your soapbox at Goodwill or the Salvation Army?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Deiter tried to completely change Kevin's style, you don't do that after he has been playing this long. Make some slight improvement , but not a complete change. There is no way he could know what the puck was going to do on one bounce. He was ready. Can't think of who the captain was, but Russel sent him out later and Kevin pointed to the exact spot where the puck hit. No way that play should be a negative on Kevin.

The bottom line on Genoe was that he wasn't a top flight D-I goalie. Mediocre numbers in junior. Mediocre numbers with Kochan. Mediocre numbers with Shields. Genoe posted his best save percentage in Kochan's last season at Tech.

I popped over to the BCHL site for the first time this season and our recruits are off to a hot start:

Alex Gillies - tied for 2nd in the league with 13 points, currently first in goals scored
Mason Blacklock - tied for 3rd in the league with 12 points, currently second in goals scored
Demico Hannoun - tied for 5th in the league with 10 points
Evan Anderson - tied for 7th in the league with 8 points
Jake Kauppila - 1 goal and 4 assists in 9 games
Trevor Cope - 6 points in 5 games in the OJHL

Three games in Picture in Picture with individual audio controls? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawesome.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Hi all, Stephen Anderson here, the former DMG Tech hockey beat writer. Now that I'm shifting into fan mode, I'll jump on board here, too. I've read the forum for years for insight, but I'm excited to take part in the banter.

I never did see the old video feed, mainly because I was at the games anyways, but the new HD feed is awesome, including the picture-in-picture feature. They picked a great year to introduce all this now that I'm in Green Bay! While I'm down here, I'll do what I can to get to some Gamblers games to get a sneak peak at some USHL recruits.

Anyways, looking forward to a great season with you all.

Welcome aboard Stephen. Feel free to class up our usual banter with some serious journalism once in a while... or you can just sink to our level of dry humor and insightful wit.
