Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I love projecting line combos in April. The thing that strikes me is we're now seeing Furne and Gordic as 3rd liners/role players, these were the guys that had to lead the team when Baker and Olson were hurt. I expect a big improvement in W/L next year, hoping to make the big show.

Do you think baltus will make the top 9 next year?

I have no idea about any of the recruits but always enjoy the scouting reports from people who have seen them play.

Just taking a look at what the lines might look like next year.
Fitting the players into the similar type the team had with the roles from this year makes a rough look at what's available below.

B. Pietila Kero Petan
D. Johnstone Khaira Heinonen
Furne D. Johnstone Gordic
Eick Rix Neville

Gould, Holmberg, Hietila, Sturos and Anderson rotating in .
I thought Holmberg looked great at the GLI. I was surprised he did not see much ice the remainder of the season.
Is Gould a scorer and will show more than he showed his first year.
Is Vallis on the radar??????

Sweeney Hyland
Stebner Sova
Leibinger Fillion

I think Sweeney becomes Seigo and Hyland is the best offensively for that pair.
Sova with Stebner makes a dominating pair with more offensive upside from Sova (my favorite defenseman on the team)

Davis, Ericsson and Hanna rotating in

Well who would play third line center.? I would think that's a key slot.
Let's say that this next year we have a similar number of freshmen make the lineup as this year. That would be what, four about 5 spots? That's two on defense and say three on offense. Kind of makes you wonder which three.

Gould... I expect he will be better next year, and he will have to be. Khaira I would expect to be better as well. I think the defense will be better but it wasn't all that great this year, though it did get better at the end.

As far as a goal. I disagree we should be disappointed with anything but a bid. For me, I'd like to see them pass the eye test. Are they better, and second, can we quantify the area's that they are. Fewer turnovers, more goals for, less goals allowed. Better Pp % etc. I think if you are expecting a bid, it sets you up for failure.

The most glaring thing they have to improve is the PK. 80% won't cut it unless you can score an average of four goals a game (which no one does anymore). More consistent goaltending will be a big part of that, but the PK units in front of them have to be better as well.

Wow! Huge slight of MTU by Gary Bettman in today's Winter Classic announcement at JLA when discussing the GLI...

:(

So, lemme guess...Michigan was the only mentioned host, and there was no mention of the current champion? ;)

Honestly, I'd expect nothing more from Gary and the local media.

What are Shield's plans?

Likely staying put for another year. He said that when he recruited Copley and Phillips, he promised them that he'd be at Tech at least their first year, and he seems pretty proud of the effort they put in. They became friends and together they sought him out for as much help as possible. Phillips, especially, had more problems with mechanics than Copley, and worked on a lot of stuff in practice to be able to get those starts at the end of the year. Pearson and Shields both seem to think it's all about the mental game for both of them going into next season. So it sounds like he's committed to at least one more season, but obviously if he gets an offer to be a full-time assistant, all bets are off.

Yep. One of the camera guys panned up to the CCHA and GLI banners, so at least Tech was shown; but Gary only talked about Michigan, and Red Berenson was the University representative.

While I sort of expect it with them hosting at the Big House, it seems like these "other" events are just coattail events for these people.

I think the worst part of the announcement was when Olympia Entertainment's representative was proud that the Toronto Marlies would be taking on the "Grizzlies" in an AHL game at Comerica...

I didn't realize the Griffins affiliation was ending, and the ECHL Utah Grizzlies were being invited to play against the Marlies...

They are; Bettman and the NHL have little to do with the Illitch cash grab that is the Comerica Hockeyfest (or whatever they're calling it).

They also listed Tech playing UM.

Tech should get MSU in first round of GLI

I have higher expectations than most. the PP was not the problem. ranked 12th overall in the nation. Agree with Fade the PK needs significant improvement. (ranked 47th last year).

Michigan Tech's biggest issues going into next season are all related: Goaltending, defense, PK and # of penalties taken. If you improve that and hold the other areas where they were, this team will be much improved and take those next steps we're waiting for years to see.

That's all true but it misses the point . Point being a bid might not be the best measure of how good they are .

I agree with you but only because of the conference reshuffling. We have no idea how things are going to shake out with the new conferences and bids and overall quality of leagues. We can all guess but we really have no idea. I do know that if season ticket holders are asking for their playoff tix money back I'll be extremely disappointed and that will be an understatement for many here.

It's far from a foregone conclusion that Tech is going to be in the top tier of the nWCHA or get a bid. I think Ferris, NMU, Mankato, LSSU, Fairbanks and Bemidji have all shown that they can skate with anyone and can field strong teams. I'd predict that Mankato and Ferris will both be tough to beat next year, as will Northern. It would be wildly inaccurate to call Tech the 800 lb gorilla in this group and to raise expectations accordingly, but I've heard a lot of talk of that sort the past year. I'd hate to see a much improved Tech team lose fan support because they didn't win the nWCHA crown. I'd call any finish in the top four of the nWCHA an improvement and a successful season.

I can not wait to see a preseason poll for the WCHA next year to see where both the coaches and media think teams will finish.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I'm guessing Tech is 4th in the coaches poll, and 5th or 6th in the media poll.
