Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

So what is the latest on the video scoreboard? Are they selling the old one or donating it to another team or maybe the Dee? I would take it, but I don't have the ceiling height in my apartment and getting to the 3rd floor would be a *****.

Ryan J

I can't see them donating it as parts for it aren't readily available anymore.

I just thought of the Dee because the Mac's first center score board ended up being used there for many years after Tech removed it. However based on recent photos, it appear it has finally been removed from the Dee as well.

those few Denver fans you may have seen are players parents, not fans.

Page three? Unacceptable.
We beat UND just two weeks ago, so clearly we could have skated circles around Yale and gone to the Frozen Four and won the title for the WCHA saving us from all of this East Coast blah blah blah that has taken over this board.
Discuss.

did you notice that the game plan yale used was identical to the game plan that mel came up with against UND 3 weeks ago.?

Apparently they executed better. It only worked 1/3 of the time for us!

(I'm going to take some heat for that, aren't I?)

Why would you take heat? You spoke the truth. The only catch is, Ylae had them in a 1 game series, we had a 3 game series. Anything can happen in a 1 and done situation.

Maybe it's good we were on the 3rd page, it means we dont' have any early departures to talk about or crazy coaching changes like Gwoz being out at DU.

Sometimes a quiet offseason is good.

Mel said at the end of the year he would be very active on the recruiting trail. I wonder if there will be any announcements soon.

with what we already have committed, I don't expect to hear much other than a goalie. Beyond that I think it's more about finding diamonds in the rough like Tristan Rostagno and other younger players to keep an eye on going forward. No reason to offer to a young kid unless they are extremely confident the kid with be a stud.

Well, the pressure will definitely be on Mel in Year 3. He did himself few favors with that non-conference schedule - I like it, I think it's gutsy, but I will be very surprised if we're at .500 after the first 12 games, with 9 of them being on the road.

On the flip side, 9 of the final 12 regular season games will be at home. So there's a great chance to make a run at home ice there.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Congrats to Cam Ellsworth as assistant coach for the University of Massachusetts Lowell on helping them reach their first Frozen Four ever. He spent 3 years as an assistant for Sioux City in the USHL before being hired by Norm Bazin when he took over as Head Coach for UML for the 2011-2012 season. I think Cam has a bright future in coaching and could certainly be look at as a replacement if Damon, Bill and/or Shields ever left Michigan Tech. According to UML's website they do not have a volunteer goalie coach so I'm guessing Cam has been extremely valuable to UML helping with Doug Carr and Connor Hellebuyck.

EDIT: Hoping to catch up with Cam either before or after the Frozen Four to discuss his coaching career and everything. Already inquired but he's still checking on what UML wants as far as him doing interviews before the Frozen Four.

You know kids develop at such different rates. One kid who is great as a 14-15 year old, is a has been at 17. Another kid, who grows late and who is gangly at 16, turns into a great players at 18-19. So yeah finding that kid is tough. I'm sure he is out there though and I'm glad Mel is out looking for him.

Watching Quinnipiac, ( pronounced quinna- pack btw) the high skill, smaller guy like Peca will be more and more in demand. The way the game is now, the bigger guys, and the physical guys without so much finesse are at a disadvantage because using their size to gain an edge is becoming harder and harder.

I would be very surprised if he ever came to Michigan Tech with Mel here. I know he put his name in the hat for the assistant coaching position when Mel was hired, but Mel never returned his phone call. Needless to say, Cam wasn't too happy with Mel. But if one of the assistants leave, and with the local family ties (wife is from Lake Linden) who knows what could happen.

I'm happy for him. Good guy and a good coach/recruiter.

anything less than an NCAA tourney bid next year will be considered a huge disappointment by me. Mankato made the tourney this year with a 1st year head coach. UMass Lowell was 5-25 just 3 years ago. Hired a new coach 2 years ago and has made the NCAA tourney in consecutive years, including the Frozen 4 this year. and before anyone mentions freshman goaltending as an excuse, both Mankato and UMass Lowell had freshmen as their #1 goalies. in fact, both St. Cloud and UMass Lowell have young teams with only 3 seniors on each roster.

I think an NCAA tourney bid should be a goal for next year but the only question there is how high you have to finish in the WCHA to have a chance at a bid. Most likely will have to do well (not get swept by anyone) in non-conference to have an easier shot at an at-large bid. I definitely think home ice and a 20 win season are reasonable expectations but like I said, I'm just not sure how the NCAA bids will play out to know how hard an NCAA tourney bid will be to get in the WCHA.
