Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

You're right, I was thinking too quickly. Only 4 out of 10 schools in the nWCHA will have the big ice (UAA, UAF, Mankato, NMU), compared to 6 out of 12 in the current arrangement.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Today's uni-rumor: Tech staff is considering "tweaking" the road jerseys, but overall was very pleased with the Reebok jerseys. I'm sure they will be even more pleased with them if they can get a league title or two in the near future and Reebok starts comping them some jerseys.

As for the blacks, I would like to see them go back to a logo of some sorts on the black with multi-colored names/numbers with something other than a block font. Unfortunately, it would make more sense to have a logo at home and "Michigan Tech" on the road so what I want isn't likely to happen.

Shields - I get the feeling he is liking the coaching gig and will be around for a few years until he gains experiance. Not to say he wouldn't jump at the change to move up in his coaching career if that opportunity comes, but I don't get the sense he would leave his position to just stop coaching and do something else especially with a drafted goalie on the roster. I'm sure Winnipeg has asked about Shield's plans at some point and that would have a direct impact on how long they let their pick play in Houghton vs the pro minors.

Today's odd facts: The 1961-62 NCAA Champion MTU Huskies only lost three games all season posting a 29-3-0 record. What makes it more impressive is that MTU started the season 0-2-0 dropping their first two games of the season to Michigan in Ann Arbor. Only one other loss would blemish the Huskies record that season, another loss again to Michigan at the Dee in their 12th game of the year leaving the Huskies at 9-3-0. Tech would go on to win the remaining 20 games of the season, including the WCHA championship game over (who else) Michigan, 6-4 by scoring four goals in the third period. Tech dominated the NCAA tourney winning their two games by a combined 13-2 score.

I think we'll get a couple more years out of Shields. He seems to like the situation he's in for now.

I'm guessing the Jets would like to see Phillips step up and earn a majority of the starts next year, even though the staff is obviously planning for a tandem. Sounds like Shields has spent most of this season preparing him to have that chance, and it'll be more of a mental battle for both goalies now.

Given that it's hard to get a third goalie because of our current situation, I take that to mean they're trying to land a third goalie who can legitimately challenge the starters and potentially get some starts his junior or senior year, so that's good. I expect they will get a hard worker with potential who will be another good project for Shields. ;)

As was mentioned during the season, MTU is interested in Kujava with the GB Gamblers but Kujava is still hoping for a scholarship if some kind. Huskies have a few other older goalies on their radar so only time will tell.

My guess is they'll go to some form of two color lettering.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I noticed on the official USCHO 2013-14 schedules spreadsheet, Michigan will host tech 11/1-11/2.

First time since 2/17-2/18 in 1984 Michigan will host tech at Yost. FWIW, tech won game 1 5-4, and Michigan took game 2 7-6 in OT for the split.

Can we please retire the tired old Piano Dog logo? It looks dated and homemade—which it is—and is a constant reminder of bad hockey. It's time for a new dog to go along with our new coach and winning attitude...

Uhm, there are no piano dogs on the current uniforms. I'd like to see it retired for good too but I doubt it will happen.

How many teams get into the tourney next year as the landscape changes? Just the auto bid from the conference tournament?

Depends on if Mankato gets upset in the conference tournament, ala Niagara this year.

You're right, no piano on the current uniforms. That dog is awful. Personally, I'd like to see Tech go with a yellow helmet with an old school MTU logo on it. That would would look really cool. Particularly re: the black uniforms, each element is fine on it's own. Collectively, it's boring.

Yep, time to retire that piano dog from everything. i remember when it came out. it's basically a rip off of the old Pittsburgh Penguins logo.

Does anyone know if the last installment of the Mel Pearson show aired yet?

Maybe because they will not have as many WCHA teams in it as this year.

Unfortunately, it's still on a lot of the fan merchandise. I like the old stacked MTU square logo and my 1979 yellow/white/black Huskies cap with that logo is getting pretty tired. The current hat selection is weak so it'll have to last another year.

No chance that will happen any time soon. It is an offical sports mark of MTU and they just stuck it on the side of a bus, so you know it isn't going away.

So if you could "trade-in" piano dog, what would you want? Realistic? Abstract? Cartoon / Mascot?

I don't want a "happy" logo and it seems that the more detail you add, the cheesier they look so I would vote for an abstract. I know these belong to other programs, but I would be happy with any of these on a short term basis. (I'm a fan of constant change.)
