Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

Sounds like it's basically a spring version of the "Meet the Coaches" events Russell used to run, with some kids' activities thrown in. Plus they can drive sales well in advance of the season.

All of this, of course, has the long-term goal of encouraging local youth players to keep thinking about playing for Tech. So that when one who is good enough for D1 comes along, he's been on the radar for years.

Absolutely it helps when you have local players like the Keros that want to play at Tech.

A couple Spring Hockey Carinval notes.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

I didn't realize there was Mel P. show on 4/21, here are a few highlights I noted after listening to the podcast for those that haven't listened.

On Championship game.
Union's foundation started 12 years ago with old coach Keven Sneddon-now at Vermont, then Nate Lehman -now at Providence, takes times.
No scholorships is a misconception, the ivys have financial aid, offer attractive packages, and in some ways aren't limited to 18 scholorships like other hockey schools.

On Pheonix departure:
Encouraged him to continue his classes, had to drop one, but will complete the rest
Washington scouts had been following the team for a month tracking Pheonix
You like communication from Pro teams, we knew they might be interested, didn't know they'd sign him
Pheonix was 1 of the 3 players Mel talked to after season about being contacted by teams, wanted to talk about where the players at hockey wise/schooling etc
Pheonix came in and said Washington reached out to him the week before BGSU, going into biggest series of the year, Mel understands, but wish they would've waited until after the series, or give Tech coaches a heads up, Goaltender is most important player, want to eliminate distractions
Every NHL team is different, everyone aproaches it different, some NHL teams very open about a player, other don't want to tell you anything about what they're thinking

On goaltending:
Jamie is looking forward to the opportunity, need to get Wintjes in too
Winnepeg has been good, never asked why he isn't playing, see him as a future prospect, Mel knows Jamie is happy, and he knows he has a good opportunity to take another step
As we recruit better players, kids will leave early, even with Jujhar, you're building something and lose pieces, but overall a little surprised, Pheonix could've developed here
Washington, Tampa Bay, Chicago were up here, we're getting more scouts as we get better players, and if they're there to watch a Petan they may see another player like a Pheonix that catches their eye, our team is getting a lot of exposure

On Blake Pietila:
Doing great, had minor surgery on wrist, played all year with slight injury, a bad wrist can make it tough, he'll be full go for summer workouts
New Jersey is patient, lets their guys play/develop, things can change, but from conversation, Blake is excited to come back and have his best year
He came in at 18 years old, pro hockey will be there for him in time

On recruits:
Still unsure how many guys will come in
Make decisions on the year they've had, some have had injuries, want them over ready so they can step in like a Hanna and contribute
We're bringing in some very good freshmen, they will complement the team
Reid is a good example, slow start, played with good players and filled a role
As a staff we like 1 freshmen with 2 established forwards on forward lines

On the Schedule:
Great to have Michigan here, want to bring quality teams to Houghton
Oct 4 is the first date a team can play a game and we'll be at LSSU
It's the first official day of practice as well, it's been done
LSSU was double scheduled on a different weekend, this is the only weekend that we both had open
We're off 2 weekends after that (17/18 was supposed to be LSSU), looking for a Canadian team and will have an intersquad game as well
Going to WI this year, we had been talking to them about trying to get a return trip to the copper country, we worked some things out, and we'll go down to Madison, like to play a good competative non-conference schedule
We're tryign to continue playing rivals that we've played in the past, some teams are more interested than others

Season tickets are $225 through end of May, great price, we've had great crowds

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

Mel P show for 5/29 - mostly promoting the 5/31 Spring Hockey Carnival, sounds like a cool event:
Spring Hockey Carnival 4-6PM on 5/31
Hot dogs, fries, pop, adult beverages, bean bag toss, shoot on the goalies, accuracy shooting, facepainting, bounce house, play Xbox on the videoboard
Great for players to visit fans without pressure of game
1st annual, hoping to grow it from here

It's a year round sport, including recruiting:
Muckalt is in a rink this weekend in Cedar Rapids, IA, Mel heads out recruiting 3 weeks in a row soon.
We had a recruit on Memorial weekend on an unofficial visit.
It is different bringing in a recruit now in Spring vs. hockey season when it could be a Blizzard.
We don't hide our winter, it's a hockey town and we get winter weather. Most players don't mind that.
The young man/his dad went up to Copper Harbor and golfed. It's nicer to walk campus at this time of year, we have beautiful areas around here, it sells itself.
Good visit and he committed to come to Michigan Tech in a few years.

On Damon/Assistant coach:
Happy for Damon, he'll do a good job. He's really good with the players and the community. Coincidence we play Damon in his first ever games as coach.
We've had no shortage of great candidates. Always have guys in mind to see if they're interested. Talked to those guys and had a number of applications. Each candidate has something they bring to the table.
We'll narrow it down and in 2-4 weeks we should have someone on board.
Recruiting is so far ahead now, not in a big rush to get someone on board. Want to give them 2-3 months to get moved and to know the team. It'll be exciting to have someone new with new ideas.

Concerned LSSU is first official day of practice?
Prior to that you can do 2 hours a week starting Sept 15. Not as concerned because we have 9 of 10 top scorers back, 5 of 6 Dmen in last game are back, Jamie Phillips is back. So much to work on installing systems, but returning guys will be fine with not changing too much.

Hope PP continues to improve?
Hope so, every year is different. We struggled on PP early, D. Johnstone out, Blake struggled, didn't have Seigo replacement. Hanna and Sturos came on in 2nd half. We could have one of better PPs in league/nation.

Wes asked Mel thoughts on season ticket offer:
Compliment to our fans, since Mel's been back he's been encouraged in their involvement with our team. Give us home ice advantage. $225 is great offer. There will be NHL players in this arena this year.
We have good players too. 6-8 players will attend NHL Development camp this summer.

Goaltending, Phillips, Wintjes, Kero:
Going in, Jamie has played some real good games. It's his job to lose, but everyone can earn it. Wintjes, watching him in practice and knowing his junior success, he just need opportunity to get in net. He has a bright future.
Can't say enough about Devin Kero, played 2 years of juniors, struggled 1st year, team wasn't that good, went from NAHL to BCHL and made all rookie team. Very athletic, he'll work hard.
Have wanted to get Wintjes in, but so few games, every game is so important. Didn't have room to throw him in, he had earned it looking good in practice, have felt bad we couldn't get him in. He'll get games this year.

Suzzanne Sanregret stopped by:
Upgraded sound system and technology in ice arena
10 center suites are 3-5 year contracts, there is a waiting list for those
Corner suites are game by game basis, a few openings for those, they'll open up in June
People will notice the sound system changes, it'll be easier to control in various areas, Dirk - people don't realize the science Suzanne - a senior design group went through the whole arena for dead spots and spots that were too loud.
With the video board we had some hiccups that people in stands didn't know about it, but resolving that and expanding the show for fans
We were subcontracting out the position, but we are bringing the production in house and we will get a young/creative person to do video production and web streaming for next season
This will be the 50th GLI - looking forward to getting back to the Joe, hopefully have a new arena in a few years.
There will be special 50th year events, announced in July/August.
Mel - compliments to Suzanne and everyone involved, the building is great with video board and suites, it's great for our players to see everything going on

On seniors/alums:
Nice to see players that have moved on to the next level.
Davis Payne was recruited by Mel, now he's an assistant coach with LA Kings, good for him. He'll be a head coach again in the NHL, great hockey mind.
Josh Robinson in AHL with Dallas Stars farm team, they're up 2-1 in their series.
Scott White - GM of that AHL team, done a great job, works with Dallas Stars and their AHL team. Another guy Mel recruited.
Rix will play in England and work on his masters.
Stebner got some games in at the end of last year, he wants to continue to play.
Furne/Johnstone have some opportunity, nothing finalized yet.
Holmberg will play in Europe, Sweden or France.
All will have their degrees, that's so important to get that degree for when hockey comes to an end.

Wes asked about overall thoughts on next year's team:
Excited to see growth of some of our players.
Neville, can't wait to see him take a step forward. We have a team that can compete for the conference championship. You know when you have a team like that, and we're at that point.
You need a strong nucleus of upperclassmen to carry you and act as coaches in locker room. Pietila, Johnstone, Kero being seniors will have a huge impact. Good players and good leaders.
We have a nice group of Freshmen coming in but they only need to complement the team not lead. When we were at UND in playoffs, we had freshmen (JJ and Petan) against UND seniors trying to beat them.
Excited for the year, good schedule, WCHA is a good conference, strong league. Our players are working out 5 days a week 7:30AM M-F, they're excited. Getting ready for the fall.

Questions for Mel:
Bubble players - are any of last years in/out of line up players going to make a jump this year?
Anxious for Tyler Heinonen, got off to a decent start, then a lull, then injured, he missed a lot of hockey. He has potential and a chance to breakout this year.
Leibinger/Watson are 2 young Dmen that played a lot of hockey, ready to see them take it to the next level.
Vallis, he hasn't had his best hockey. Baltus is another that can do it, he works hard, good kid, just wasn't strong enough physically to handle older players last year. Has hockey sense you can't teach.
We'll have depth/competition with tough decisions.

What are Mel's thoughts on who will be 1, 2, 3 in WCHA?
Mankato will be Mel's #1. Also like BGSU on paper, Ferris too.

We'll go to Alabama for 1st time, how will we get there?
With all of flight cancellation out of Houghton lately, probably bus. It's Thanksgiving week, work our way down and then probably a sleeper bus back. 16 hour trip, it was 12 hour to Omaha, not a lot different.

Assistant coach position, do you have an idea of what you're looking for? Or are you waiting to see what applicants bring to the table?
We're looking for a variety of things. You wear different hats, 1st recruiting, Good recruiter, enjoy being on the road, evaluating talent without a lot of opportunities to see a player. And sell your school.
Coaching as well, someone that is a go between players and head coach. Need to teach/coach those players up. New coach would also handle academics, liaison between hockey team and academic area. Need to be good in this community.
We've had excellent candidates, good hockey people. We need someone that will bring new ideas, Billy and I are from MI and way things were done there. Good to bring someone in with new ideas.

Wes - is scouting you have it or you don't? Evaluating talent?
Some guys have it. But you can learn from your mistakes. Mel likes to review players he didn't like while scouting, there was a player MI was recruiting when he was there, his skating bothered Mel wasn't sure he could get around icesheet, and now he's playing in the NHL game last night as a young player.
The players has worked on his skating the last few years. You learn scouting from things like that, reviewing past experience.
Most peope can tell top players, hard part is finding diamonds in the rough, good players down the road. Find that player everyone else overlooks. Be it character, work ethic etc. Everyone can see skating ability, height etc.
That's why we like to recruit captains and people that played in big games like Matt Roy, won a USHL champiosnhip. Blacklock/Hannoun playing in RBC cup.

Is that you Jamie?
Isn't this speculating about people's private lives in the forum?

:D

I speculate that Biddco will be getting a warning or a vacation from "Board" soon. ;)

Well the team might not be flying, but no way I'm taking a bus. Time to put all those Delta Airlines delayed flight vouchers to use. Trip to Alabama for Turkey Weekend hockey... booked! Who else is in to populate the JMSIA (Deep) South????

I'm glad that you're coming. I think that I might have a jersey for you. In fact, I know that I do.

Mel's underestimating that trip. You might be able to make it from Houghton in 16 if you don't stop fror food or fuel at all and you make really good time. More like 18 1/2 with a sleeper coming back and 20 going down minimum. I've made that trip plenty of times from Hancock or Marquette to Birmingham. One thing I will is that if you go, you will be happy you did. Terrific town, friendly people and plenty to do and see. If you book now, you can get Marquette to Huntsville for $404. Lots of Tech alumni down in Huntsville & Birmingham as well.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

I'll most likely be there. My son lives in Birmingham and goes to UAB so I can visit him at the same time. Huntsville is a solid 12 from Detroit,( I've driven it about 6 times) if you don't stop for anything but gas and drive 70. (except in ohio of course.) flying in to nashville is fairly cheap and not that long a drive, maybe two hours.Same for Birmingham, a little over an hour drive, except at rush hour. If you fly to Huntsville There is a direct from Detroit and from Atlanta as well as I believe, Chicago.
If I was the coach I'd certainly consider flying. The trouble is the airplanes into huntsville are pretty much RJets and they have a small seat inventory and limited cargo space. you could also ship the equipment separately and just fly the people which I'm pretty sure would save money.
Another thing you could do is fly out of Green bay, that way you get a big plane, and go to say nashville or birmingham, also on a big plane, and then drive the last bit. But if you did that you'd have to change planes somewhere.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

I'm sure that's what Mel weighed against: bus to Green Bay, fly to Atlanta (changing planes, likely), busing from Atlanta. As you noted, you can't get a hockey team in here on an RJ. When we fly, we bus to Atlanta, which usually has better connections for where we're going. I'm 99% sure that we bused to Houghton last year — I know that we got to GB on one of the trips, skated to shake the bus legs off, and got back on. It's what the boys sign up for.

Oh, and Douglas and I once made it from Huntsville to Detroit in 10 hours. It was him driving. ;)

Speed limit in Ohio is 70.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

Pat Mikesch is the front runner to be the next head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers. That could be huge for Michigan Tech.

Did I miss something, what happened to Derek Lalonde? Im not to sure how huge for tech that would be as he is already listed as the associate head coach. I'm not sure how long he's held the associate head coach title but he has been an assistant coach there for the past 4 seasons (I think).

LaLonde will be named the head coach of the ECHL Toledo Walleye at 10 am Monday. Not sure why this would be huge for Tech???
