Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

I kinda wish Red had retired this year before Mel has really impressed on paper from a distance. We know he's turning things around but I'd hardly consider the direction on paper a success, would have made it alot harder for the Michigan AD to hire Mel right now.

Is Mel better as Batman or Robin? Let's hope they turn the corner in year 4.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

He wanted a paid hockey coaching position.
And if they didn't choose to let go of Whitten or Muckalt to keep him, what makes you think he'd replace Pearson? As far as I know he's not even coaching right now...

EDIT: Apparently he is the Goaltending Consultant for the Florida Panthers.

Mr Shields is a like able guy and he liked his time up north. If MTU is smart he would be a coach I would not pass on him.

He has a great personality and awesome leadership skills.

I would hope MTU would open their wallet for Steve if Mel does leave anytime soon.

Cam Ellsworth would be at or near the top of my list if Mel leaves. What he's helped build at UMass Lowell in 3 years is very impressive.

You have to think, after all those years of being shelled, anchoring a team to many close losses, and getting little respect for it, he's had a big role in tutoring Carr and Hellebuyck on the mental game.

Would he return west if the opportunity was there? Would Mel seriously consider him?

Not everyone gets an endless stream of NHL head coaching gigs like Mike Keenan. If you're lucky you get a second crack after getting let go once. After that you're back in the minors for good or... back to college. *Cough* Andy Murray *Cough* Why Western? Well when you're out of options...

Who said head coach? I'd hedge that many NHL assistants make as much or more than the average NCAA head (and Mel's base salary is well above average).

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

I'm sure DP would be a reasonable candidate for the position if he had any interest.
In my opinion, I don't see Mel leaving early from his current contract and I really don't see him having another job before he is done with his coaching career. If he really wanted the Michigan job I can't believe he wouldn't have held out a few more years downstate. Red isn't going to live forever. If MP wasn't an MTU alumnus, I might think differently. If Damon and Bill don't stay for 5-10 years with Mel, I wouldn't be surprised at all. They don't have the strong ties to the team and are still trying to build their resume.
I get the feeling that Mel will be the next John MacInnes who stays for as long as he feels he can do the job and will bring the program back to a more stable and successful state of existence. Maybe he is more along the lines of Mike Sertich and he won't coach another 20 years and is just here to give the program his best effort for a few years before he hangs it up.
Honestly after 20+ years in collect hockey I have to imaging he had offers to coach in the pro ranks if he wanted to do so, but he seems to just enjoy the college side of the game. I am even more confident that Mel knows how everyone MTU related would feel if he jumped out of this job to return to Michigan. Again as an MTU alumnus, I just can't see him doing that to the program. If he had any intention of just trying to get some head coach experience for a few years, there are plenty of other programs that would have given him strong consideration and wouldn't have been nearly as awkward to leave on short notice. I don't see how he would have left Michigan and accepted the MTU position without asking / answering these type of questions with both teams.
Of course if Michigan does pluck him away, the Wolverines will displace Denver and North Dakota as the scum of D-I college hockey...

Can anyone confirm that? Because if it's true, it might be the most accurate thing the Pink Pony account has ever posted.

Cam's wife is from Lake Linden, not Calumet. In any case, he's done a tremendous job as primary recruiter and goalie coach out there. The program had 5 wins the season prior to them taking over. The turnaround has been astounding with NCAA tourney bids and a Frozen 4 appearance last year.
