Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

Here's a question and I just now thought of it. We have been under the assumption that Coach Shuchuck is staying and I like him and all, but is that a given? And second is there any urgency to getting assistant coaches in?.

I don't think anyone was assuming much as the HC search was so tight lipped. Staying or leaving, I would think this is a conversation between Shuchuck and Shawhan happening now.

Just how much of the recruiting did Shawhan do? I would think this would minimize any loss of commits with Shawhan still holding the tiller.

Urgency of an asst? Maybe depending on the Shuchuck conversation. If he is leaving then you need to find two ACs, and get them BOTH acclimated. Though if Cam would come there would be less need to get him up to speed. I know that seems like a lateral move but it would also boost his profile for a HC gig to show success at two universities.

I certainly think there is urgency to get someone to help shoulder the scouting/recruiting going on right now...one name that jumped out at me from the press conference as a possible assistant is Tyler Shelast getting promoted from Strength and Conditioning to a hockey only assistant. I don't know what his interest is in that transition but he seems to be well respected at MTU and by Shawhan specifically...obviously, Shawhan has connections throughout hockey. It will be hard to get a list of potential candidates or really know who he has connections to or would be interested in coming to Houghton.

Re: Shuchuk, I agree it's a bit off that Shawhan is out recruiting, but there's no mention that Gary is, too.

Shelast might be handy for the next time Potulny gets froggy. "come on over!" That was pretty funny.

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

I actually forgot about Shelast, I could see him making that switch.

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

I think Shelast would make an acceptable #2 assistant as he clearly knows the program / the university inside out and has the passion. But no doubt there is still a big void to fill with the primary assistant coach, or whatever title the put on that position based on their past experience. That would hopefully be an outside hire.

At least when Michigan Tech football loses at home to a Division II team, it isn't an all-time, national news type embarrassment for our program... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Appalachian_State_vs._Michigan_football_game Ryan J
Funny epilogue to that game: Appalachian State traveled in buses to Ann Arbor from Boone. On their way back home through Ohio, they received a police escort by the Ohio State Highway Patrol all the way to the state line. :D

Agreed. Cam is young enough that a lateral move would be a positive move.

Agree fully, I don't think Shelast is going to just step in as the main recruiter. Is the AC position posted yet?

Would he make the same or more money at Tech? How would his wife be compensated for having to leave her job? Are they able to make an equitable exchange in the housing market?Would Ellsworth have great responsibility at a smaller school in a lesser league? What is the clear benefit of moving from a Hockey East Team ranked number #5 and limited travel (geat when you have a small child) for a WCHA team ranked #27?

I would think they would benefit in the housing market as in general Houghton is 40% less expensive COL than Bedford. More likely have greater responsibility, not worried about the pay. Lesser or greater league doesn't matter if you show you can win. Bazin gets most the credit for UML. Don't see him leaving anytime soon do you?

Somewhere I read what his wife did but can't find it and yes small child but she still has family in the CC.

It's a nice thought, maybe even ideal. But another key factor is if Shuchuk is retained. I think chances are slim Ellsworth takes the side step. But stranger things have happened. I do think the Shelast idea has merit. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a USHL assistant move up.

For those of you who remember huskyfan - Mr. huskyfan has passed after a battle with cancer the past few years.

In the past year 5 people who I know closely, not including Mr. HF, have passed due to this disease. It makes you wonder and it makes you grab life as much as you can while you are healthy.I really hate hearing about this kind of thing.

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

Raised a glass to "the meester" as he was known around these parts. Prayers are with HF and the rest of the family.

I really don't have the words. I don't. :(
