So do you figure another week before the assistants are named?

Any news or quotes from Cam in the newspapers out East?

Dallas Steward Named Assistant Hockey Coach

Jun 06, 2017
HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech head hockey coach Joe Shawhan announced the hiring of Dallas Steward as an assistant coach on Tuesday (June 6). Steward comes to Tech from the Chicago Steel where he was an associate head coach with the team that just won the Clark Cup as USHL champions.

"We're very excited to have an individual the caliber of Dallas join our program," Shawhan said. "He's had success follow him being part of two of the last three USHL Championships. He has a strong recruiting network and his character and ethics will be a great addition to our hockey program."

"I'm really looking forward to joining the rich tradition of Michigan Tech," Steward said. "Our goal is to continue the current trend of Husky hockey and build on the recent successes of the program."

Steward was with the Steel for two seasons. The 2016-17 team went 38-17-2 in the regular season, defeated Youngstown and Dubuque in the first two rounds of the playoffs, and won the championship with an overtime win over Sioux City in Game 5 of the Clark Cup.

Steward started his coaching career with the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) as an assistant coach and scouting director from 2011-15. He helped lead the team to three consecutive playoff berths and a Clark Cup title in 2014-15.

Steward played 138 games over four years at the University of Alaska Anchorage from 2000-04. He scored 27 goals and added 32 assists as a forward, was an assistant captain as a senior, and a three-time WCHA All-Academic selection. Steward went on to play six years of professional hockey in both the CHL and ECHL from 2004-10.

Prior to college, Steward played three seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers, winning the Clark Cup in 2000. He amassed a total of 74 points over three seasons with the Gamblers, including 18 goals and 27 assists in their championship season.

"Him and his wife have..."? Oh man, my school produces excellent engineers and scientists left and right, but very few alumni can write.

And he has a journalism and communication degree. They should have let him proofread it.

Well, the coaches roster does not list Shuchuck or Steward now, will be interesting to see who takes the final spot.

sweet, hope to see quick dividends on the recruit list.

Need to make changes as coaches are listed on the roster page. Someone wake up

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

Guys, I know he might not be with the program much longer and so there's little need to commit it to memory, but it's S-h-u-c-h-u-k. Only one 'c.'

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

Congratulations to Coach Steward, welcome to the Huskies.

Now just one piece to the puzzle left to go. THG throwing John Scott's name out there. He would be an interesting choice, name recognition and defense. But, can Tech afford to turn the D over to a first time coach??

Too bad that "can't seek or negotiate" clause wasn't in Pearson's contract. 20/20 hindsight eh?? Then again maybe he wouldn't have ever signed it if it was.

Maybe that clause is what got Rolston and Muckalt to walk away?? If they were looking at the job as short-term..

I can't see him moving his wife and kids to Houghton (away from her family in Traverse City) so that he can in turn be on the road away from them half the time. He's a family man now, life in TC is good, and I would make the same choice if I were in his shoes.

Bingo. After reading the contract I'm happier with the selection. I would have liked to see him at $275,000 or slightly higher for precedent.

Not sure I see John as being that good a choice. Name recognition is or will be gone quickly. He is fun, smart but not sure he has coaching interest.

Stewart sounds great, does he have a connection with Joe?

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

Hiring John Scott as an assistant coach is a BAD idea. Why would you hire someone with zero coaching experience to be an integral part of the staff when you are looking to build on the recent upward trend in the program? There has to be someone better out there.

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

If Tech does hire him, I hope I am terribly wrong about Scott, but I don't see him being the next Ted Donato.

Agreed. Remember earlier this year when Tech Hockey Guide published an out-of-place article in which ShirtlessGuy and his friends gush about their interactions with Scott (or life-size cutouts of him)? THG usually provides reasoned analysis, but on this subject their fandom gets in the way. He's not coming up here to coach.

You think he has no interest in coaching, he'd be a bad choice as coach, or that we're not objective about the subject (or some combination of all three)?

Seriously, we were trying to help the guy promote his book and get some page views...until the coaching search, our review of his book was the most popular thing we had ever published.
