Michigan Tech Huskies 2024-25 - OK MacNaughton, Stop Ducking Us

John J. MacInnes

Coach Emeritus
Just over two weeks until the exhibition opener.

Joe Shawhan announced on the CCHA virtual media day that the new 3rd assistant is former captain Ray Brice.

Can't help but note the relatively sparse preseason MTU hockey content in the Daily Mining Gazette and wonder if TPTB are keeping.a tight clamp on Joe's media exposure, or if he's choosing to play it careful himself. Seems like a few terse, perfunctory articles with no comments from staff.

Probably new playbook after last season's high expectations and how that played out.

Must need someone as a practice target as you don't see anyone playing D-I without junior experience.

BG has had back-to-back high-school-to-D1 goaltenders; Peter Eigner is the current holder of the honor. Their role is to take shots in practice and mind the bench door during games. They may possibly get into an exhibition game, but even in a blowout they've never seen the ice in a regular game. I assume it's the same situation at Tech.

Well, I think there were some good surprises and some not-so-good surprises last night. Coach mentioned Laurie Raiman as a positive several times, he mentioned Casper and Victor as working well but he was also not as happy with other parts of the team and/or the way we played. He didn't mention goaltending, which I took as a positive. I think several guys will be unhappy this week and others cemented their spot in the lineup next weekend.
We really have to fix our faceoffs and the pp was exceptional imho.
Looking around the league, Augustana has got to be taken seriously. It's going to be a tough slog as the coaches said at the beginning.

Sounds like Calvin Larson needs to up his game and take some folks at the DMG to lunch...

So the CCHA is losing St. Thomas and gaining Augustana. It seems like an even trade to me. I wonder what the motivation was for St. Thomas to make the move.

St. Thomas is a very wealthy private school with a crapload of money to spend on sports and a great location in the Twin Cities. As of last year they reported an $875m endowment, which is about 5.5x larger than MTU's and only a couple hundred million smaller than Denver's $1b. Also, I doubt Blasi would've taken the HC job without some assurance from the administration that they were working towards a better conference situation and were planning to fund the program at a level higher than his alma mater does. Rico is known to have a bit of an ego, and he didn't set out to beg for any HC job available.

Boy, that comment has to be in the running for understatement of the season!

Man, we have a long way to go to be good. Way too many turnovers, way too many times their forwards pressured our D into mistakes. Way too many times shooting it right at the goalie. I know the coach thought it was a good effort, but it has to be better. They won a lot of puck battles in our end and we were better on faceoffs but we couldn't parlay that into scores. Plus the pp was pretty stagnant.

Well one thing, our guys work really hard. I thought Casper V was terrific. He was my player of the weekend. I think Janssen is coming along but still has to be stronger on the puck and use his speed more. . I was less thrilled with the rest of the D corp. just not in the right position or caught flat footed a lot.
I'd like to see Bartle more. I think he could help our top line out. I like the Raiman line too. At times they were disorganized but mostly pretty good. I think Clarkson has to consider themselves lucky to win tonight. Tech had the run of play but the pp wasn't very good and so we didn't penalize Clarkson for all those penalties. and there was a lot more that didn't get called.
