We had it won but we covered the point very loosely and on another goal we covered our man as if skating next to him was all that was required. Should never have gotten to OT and then to give up a shorty like that! ugh. Basically a give away.

Sucks losing to NMU, especially how we lost, but the win on Saturday was nice.
The good news, Mankato was swept by FSU, we are in the mix for home ice, and #16 in PW all while the D is held together with athletic tape.
Joe sounded very upbeat about the team on Saturday. Might have been the first time all year. For a rebuilding year, I'll take where we are at the almost halfway point.

For me that pair of games is the shock of the season and the first sign of a possible changing of the guard at the top of the nWCHA / CCHA. Over the last five seasons what were the odds that ANY of the three following statements would have been true after a given weekend?
- Mankato getting swept (by anyone)
- Mankato getting swept AT HOME
- Mankato getting swept by FERRIS?!?

MN State was due to return to earth for a bit. They finally graduated McKay, along with four senior defensemen and a senior forward who all played big minutes and in big situations. Nathan Smith also turned pro after a huge junior season. They've built a great program and Hastings is a great coach, they simply lost way too much experience and talent all at once and they are not a magnet program for top draft picks to replace all the guys who graduated or signed early. Even after getting swept by Ferris they still have two games in hand on both Tech and BG, though the next part of their schedule gets harder (@BG, host Bemidji, then @NMU to start the new year). They could definitely pull it together and still be in the mix for a regular season title by the end of February. But...let's hope not. ;-)

Short answer, No. The UP was never part of Wisconsin.
Longer short answer. The original Michigan Territory (established 1805) included the eastern UP and Toledo Strip. As the US expanded land claims, along with Illinois and Indiana becoming states, the Michigan Territory kept expanding to include the entire UP, most if not all of modern Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa, along with parts of North and South Dakota (1833-1836). The "Toledo War" and why they hate Ohio State (1835) during Michigan Territory's pursuit of statehood lead to Michigan "giving up" the Toledo Strip and receiving the western UP as a compromise. (At the time Toledo was an important port.) A byproduct of the Michigan Territory's pursuit of statehood was creation of the Wisconsin Territory (1836) out of the lands Michigan didn't claim in their statehood application. Michigan became a state in 1837.
It is easy to see why Western Yoopers or people looking at a map would feel differently. The same could be said about other US areas that looking at a map, make no geographic sense as to why they aren't part of another state. (Panhandles, Northern MN that has no land connection to the US, the Delmarva Peninsula,...)

As a native Toledoan I can honestly say Michigan got the better part of the deal.
The Toledo war was caused by a mapping error. The border between Michigan and Ohio was to be taken due east from the southernmost point of Lake Michigan (now Gary). Turns out in the late 18th century everyone thought the the southernmost point of Lake Michigan was 20-30 miles further north than it actually was so when the final survey was done the "big oops!" was discovered...the Toledo strip was north of the newly surveyed line. If you look closely at a map you'll see the MI/OH border is slightly angled. That's the result of the Ohio guys redrawing the border to put Toledo back in OH. If you follow that line through Indiana you'll see it ends at the southernmost point of Lake Michigan.
tl;dr version: Toledo sucks.

Michigan did just fine losing Toledo. Particularly after the full extent of the copper and iron reserves generally known to be in the western UP became public knowledge, and mining it became a major economic driver for the rest of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

I don't think anyone who has watch this Tech team thought that a 6 point weekend was a given. Tech had a 4 point weekend last time they played LSSU. LSSU has a very good top line, are a big/physical team, and playing at home. Tech's offense can disappear on any given night, as was the case Friday.
Us Tech fans were hoping we could get all 6 points as there are very few points/teams with games in hand between 1st and 6th in the CCHA.

Games like this past weekend are what continue to separate Tech from nationally elite programs. You can NOT lose, much less get shut out by a team with TWO wins. Tech has now left five conference points on the table just against LSSU. You HAVE to beat the teams you should beat, home or away. The difference between 1st and 5th place is currently 5 pts. Come the end of the season, those five points are almost certainly going to represent multiple positions in the standings. Currently tied with Bemidji, but the Beavers have two games in hand on Tech.

I went to van Andel arena.com to buy tickets and found out that ticketmaster is handling all sales. No thanks, I'll just take my chances at the box office.
My understanding is the fees cannot be avoided, even at the box office. That used to not be the case, though it's been years since I've purchased a ticket at the Van Andel Arena box office.
So the cheapest two-day ticket for this year's GLI will set a person back $95.60. I paid $25 four years ago. Gonna sit this one out.
