Michigan Tech Huskies 2020-21: * Our 100th Anniversary * No Catchy Title Needed *****

Is that because of some weird NASA tie-in was considered when the runways were constructed?

Weird?!?! ;)

I think there were considerations for the local boys, yes. Sierra Nevada may land their commercial cargo craft here for that reason.

Was just window shopping to add to my jersey collection and came across this and wanted to pass it along in case someone has an MTU alumni collection going like I do for NMU players...

I would like to get on that action, but who can compete with the wallets of WBS Penguin fans? Not me certainly. They are a crazy bunch when it comes to their game worn jerseys.

In the category of "things that actually apply to the upcoming season" for a change...

WKMJ says they expect the release of the 2020/21 hockey schedule shortly. Inside word says the only holdup right now is the non-conference schedule. The fact that it's being discussed to play non-WCHA games itself is encouraging.

So with the Big Ten announcing a 24 game league schedule with 4 additional games each against AzSt, I read two things:

1) The GLI is dead.
2) Likely the series against the skunks in Houghton is dead too.

I am guessing they will reschedule Michigan for next season in Houghton.
I can't believe ASU caved and agreed to all road games. That's funny. I guess their hand isn't quite as strong as they like to think it is.

Looking at the BigTen plan of 28 games (24 conference, 4 vs ASU and a one-weekend conference tourney) gives this calendar working backwards from the Frozen Four:
April 8-10 Frozen Four (dates fixed due to TV contract)
April 3-4 Off weekend for hockey
March 26-28 NCAA Tourney Regionals
March 18-20 BigTen Tourney
March Two weekend series possible
Feb Four weekend series possible
Jan Five weekend series possible
Dec Four weekend series possible
So from December 1st to the end of the season, there are potentially 15 regular season game weekends and the Big already booked 14 of them. Any X number of weekends they back up the start from 12/1 gives them X+1 open weekends in their schedule.

So if they start Friday Nov 13, that's 4 open weekends including Nov 13-14. I see them taking on no more than one or two additional non-conference series outside of ASU and that's assuming they start playing games Nov 13.

i read a third thing;

3) ASU is getting cozy with 'like sized' schools.

their move is an investment, that may just pay off, for the future. 100% strategic move...

So ASU gets into a major conference, no entry fee, albeit no home games which is not critical being ASU has a very small arena & can't accommodate its own fan base much less visiting team base (as you continuously point out), and Covid going on whereby many other conferences are not considering ooc games, seems like ASU has a pretty decent hand. I never saw it stated anywhere that ASU claimed to "hold all the cards" concerning anything in college hockey. I think it's a pretty decent outcome for the student athletes.

Oh Joy! More ASU talk on the MTU forum.

Any thoughts on what the WCHA schedule will look like? I assume there will be a Alaska trip in the schedule which will chew up an extra weekend. I would be surprised if the WCHA has more than one non-conference series. Hoping and praying the coaches and players stay healthy.

I'm seriously doubting that anyone will have to do a double Alaska. Expect everyone to make a single trip for a single series.

The scenario that makes the most sense to me is an 18 game WCHA schedule starting January 1. That would give you two series against your travel partner (home and away) and a single series against the other 8 teams (4 home, 4 road). That finishes the season in 9 weeks, which would be the last weekend in February.

December is then available for non-conference games. I know there are WCHA schools who are also talking about playing non-league games against each other during that month. Obviously any games that were supposed to happen with the Big Ten aren't going to be played, since they sent up their middle finger to the rest of the sport. I doubt there will be a lot of teams from the east looking to travel out or vice versa. That means the Nacho is the most likely place to get an OOC game or two. UMD would be the obvious approach for Tech, but I wouldn't rule out someone like SCSU. Doubt the Huskies would approach any of the Colorado schools (DU, CC, AFA).

I can't see the WCHA playing such a short regular season. And I can't see other conferences (other than Ivy) waiting 5-6 weeks to start play after the BigTen. Just look at what happened in football - The Pac10 and BigTen tried to hold out and push football to the Spring. But suddenly every other conference started to play and magically the Pac and Big found it save to play Fall football almost overnight.

The WCHA teams are going to want more games on their schedules without having to try and go find non-conference games. The East teams are not going to want to come West, the Big schedule is now full and the NCHC hasn't exactly been friendly to the WCHA in the past so why would that change now?

The WCHA has been an unbalanced conference schedule for years and I don't see this year being any different. I would also be in favor of only the top four making the WCHA tourney this year (semi-finals on a Friday and the Final on a Sunday, all at one venue) allowing for two more weeks of regular season play. If you don't finish top-4 in conference, you are not going to the NCAA tourney so just wrap your season early and keep the teams at home to minimize further travel.

So the latest insight I have is that it will indeed be an 18 game WCHA conference schedule, with one series against each other team only for league purposes. They decided to keep the first weekend in March open as a possible make-up date for any series that are postponed.

With no available opponents from the Big Ten, that shortens the list of potential non-conference games. The likely scenario is playing a second series against a WCHA school in the building that will not host the regular season series (i.e. since the league series between LSSU and BG is in Ohio, the non-conference series would be in the Soo).

I have trouble with this. Football team after football team has had large outbreaks and resulting cancellations. Unless our team is in some sort of bubble it seems we await the same fate.

Thank you for the information.

I assume there hasn't been a decision made about fans at games.

I still wish ASU could have gotten a few games in with WCHA, but I guess it wasn't meant to be in this crazy season. Good luck going forward, hope the student athletes remain healthy!

Excellent news with the Big 10 schedule. This means there isn't any need for a single additional post about the desert team. If there is, I'm willing to start a thread especially designed for desert team fans who need to post on snowy team threads. I'm sure it will be very popular.

that would be a wonderful idea... an ASUless discussion...
