Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

a friend asked me this question few days ago when I was gushing over our own "Miracle on Ice". he wanted to know why I didn't see this coming. I didn't see this coming. Felt we would get home ice and go on to St Paul. but I never even wrote the NCAAs down on my calendar until 6 weeks ago. how about the rest of you? did you feel our season would turn out this way? that we would make the Final 16? we were predicted to finish mid pack, I thought we would do better than that, but this team is amazing.

Going in, I thought we had an outside shot if Phillips could finally live up to his hype under Shawhan's watch. His season combined with the emergence of Kero has changed everything thus far.

Did you tell your friend you didn't see it coming cause there's been no sign of it for the last 3 decades.

For me, I felt they could be top 2-3 in the WCHA but with the reshuffling I wasn't really sure how that would play out for an NCAA opportunity. I certainly didn't see them being ranked #1 in the county, even for a week and then to remain in the polls and climb back to #3 and have a shot at a #1 seed at this point in the season...

I'm the same way, didn't think this was possible, maybe home ice and/or final five. Just another step forward.

I do remember Mel saying a few comments in the off-season Mel P. show, something to the effect of knowing when you have a good group that can compete for the WCHA and he felt he had a group like that. That made me at least think it was possible, but not realistic.

Thought I'd post this news blurb here, Tech hired Darcy Way, a hockey alumni to facilitate major gifts for the athletic program.

For me, I thought we'd be better and we were close the last two or three years, but it's so hard to know how much better. I think the coach knew we'd have a special group of players who could compete with anyone.

But the last few years have made me especially skeptical, so I thought we might contend, and I thought we might make a run at the ncaa's, but actually making it, no I didn't think that. I just see so many mistakes. You know I watch the Wings a lot so maybe I am being too critical. I am just so glad we play an up tempo game and not the trap any longer. I hate watching it.

I think the reason it's so effective at the college level, and so many teams use it, is because there are so many turnover's.

The recent Habs vs Wings game was really good in showing the difference between the two systems and how to counter each one. I would bet more than 50% of the teams likely to make the NCAA's use it.

To me this is significant news. It appears we now have two people tasked with athletics fundraising, including Randy Heinonen.

They're going to need it to keep the facilities and recruiting budgets up to snuff. It's an arms race out there.

Any word on if the games will be on Charter in Houghton?

As of today: "We have been on contact with Charter since last week. Currently their engineers are working on a solution so that the game can be televised in the Houghton/Hancock area. I have not received a confirmation back yet. We will continue to pursue this as an option for fans but WCHA.tv as always will be available."

I've overestimated the team every year for the last decade, but this year I picked them to be 1st or 2nd in the WCHA and to make the NCAA tourney. However, I did not pick the WCHA teams to be in the top 5 nationally. I thought Tech would barely squeak into the NCAAs via the pairwise well under #10. That said, I also though Blacklock and Evan Anderson would be significant performers for Tech this year. I also didn't foresee Gould's development or the high point totals of Kero and Petan. I did expect that Phillips would be solid, given his development time, coaching, his size and the fact that he's drafted. I expected Tech to be a more defensive team like past Ferris teams. I did not expect the high scoring. I think the Michigan series set the tone and made the boys see how good they could be.

Their games translate the best to the NHL level. Watson too. Matt Roy will be a solid pro prospect in a few years.

i see Kero being more of a European pro. Same with Petan.

You're probably right, I just have a hard time believing that Derek Pratt and Doyle Somerby (the lowest defensemen on the list) are better prospects than any of our blueliners, with Watson and Roy probably at the top of that list.

Jim Dahl did his thing this week...

If MTU splits, they will not fall below 6th in the PWR going into the NMU series...
If they sweep, they have a chance to be #1 but more than likely they would climb to 2 or 3 in the PWR.

If you figure the NCHC splits almost all the remaining series, if you figure Northeastern wins one of the next 2 vs BU, Bemidji splits with mankato, and Tech splits the next two series. Then I get Tech at no 4, BG at 13, And St Cloud at 15. Also if Michigan wins out, I have them in.

In this scenario Tech benefits by Bemidji being no 20. All of this prior to the playoffs of course.
Also tonight on the B1g is the msu vs minnesota game. Should be real good.
