Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Of course you don't. ;)

However, given proximity (travel) and the conference splits, where MN goes (or where Kato/tUMD go) could affect where MTU goes. That whole "western hockey" thing.

There are more western teams in the top 16 than eastern, someone has to go east. Given Tech's location and lack of attendance history, I think its a good chance its Tech going east.

I ran some numbers. Even if tech wins out, if Mankato wins their other games they will likely still be #1 and if und is also a one seed then that means tech probably goes east. For tech to be in south bend, either und needs to lose the #1 seed or tech needs to lose a couple to come in at a 2 or 3 seed.

UND is guaranteed Fargo. To get south bend we will need to be the 8th or 9th seed, going with the assumption that Mankato is #1 overall.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Also submitted a cream jersey order to Shirtless. I am up here for carny and just bought the black away jersey and gold jersey. I love both of those but my most wanted jersey was the cream one so being able to get it is awesome. I would like to co!plete the set with the home jersey but it's just really plain and my least favorite of our current designs so I'm holding off on it.

Is it too late to try to get in on this Jersey thing? I have zero jerseys and I think this season requires an investment!

Understood. However if und is not a number 1 seed, then Mankato could go there as the number one, freeing up south bend for tech.

Correct. This would mean you'd expect Tech to get into the top 4. I hope you're right!

Yes. Although Expect is a strong word. As most tech fans my age I'm inherently pessimistic. I started with the analysis of losing all their games to see where that put them. I worked up from there.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Tech has proven they can win on the road. we have lots of alums out east and we do travel well. we will be able to turn out a crowd. there are a lot of teams out east I'd rather play than same old UND or Michigan or Minnesota. I think we could make a lot of noise in an eastern location. other than ease of fan travel I'd rather see us out there.

Of all the teams I've seen at our rink, Tech fans have traveled the best. Take away the student section, and Tech fans would have outcheered the BG fans.

Tech fans are why I adopted them as my second team. No lie. The dedication is insane.

I saw something posted in the screen during the Bemidji series that had MTU at 100% for fan intensity or some thing... Then at #5 in the country for college hockey atmosphere! Where did this come from?

It's from smart asset: https://smartasset.com/insights/americas-best-hockey-towns

They were #1 in fan intensity based on attendance vs population and Google searches for hockey. The only reason Houghton wasn't #1 was because of "quality of life"

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I doubt it. Tech will end where they fall based on where other teams are placed. No reason to put anyone in Fargo for attendance reasons, good attendance is guaranteed to be good due to UND. Shorter travel may get teams shifted to Fargo, though.

Tech in South Bend isn't a home run either, they'd fall behind Miami, BGSU, Duluth, Michigan and Minnesota for preference to have in South Bend, and all of those teams seem likely to end up ranked similar to Tech. Because of this, I think South Bend is the least likely landing spot for Tech. It'll be East or Fargo.

Why would you assume Miami, BG, and Duluth would go to South Bend before Tech? None of them draw, and that's going to be the #1 concern for the committee at that site. The Huskies have shown they can draw at a neutral site (GLI) which is not far from northern Indiana. And I'd like you to have a look at who's on the selection committee:

• Brian Faison, North Dakota athletic director
• Tom McGinnis, Minnesota associate athletic director
• Mel Pearson, Michigan Tech coach
• Brian Riley, Army coach
• Kevin Sneddon, Vermont coach
***Jim Knowlton, Rensselaer athletic director (chair) will not continue on after accepting Air Force AD job

I know he can't be in on any of the decisions about his own team, but I'm pretty sure having Mel on the committee is not going to hurt. At any rate, there is no one with an axe to grind.

Yes, I understand all of that, but I just don't think that they will think that Tech will bring more attendance than Miami and BGSU. I agree that we would bring more, but I don't think it will resonate with the committee, even though Mel is on the committee, because like you say, he can't be involved in those discussions. There is a chance that Tech gets swung into that region if we're a 2 see out east and Providence, BC or Lowell, etc, are a 2 seed in South Bend. Then maybe we get swapped. But if Miami or BGSU is in South Bend, and we're out east, there is no way they make that swap. In other words, it would need to line up perfectly, especially considering that 2-3 seed range is cluttered with western teams.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

For those that were at the games this past weekend, I saw they posted a jersey raffle number on the video screen during the Sat game (didn't see anything Friday). Can anyone tell me what was given away? I just like to keep tabs of what is out in the public's hands. I know they squirrel a few away even when they say they don't have anything on hand so I'm just curious what they pulled out of the archives. The last time there were "not any jerseys available", two captains jerseys got raffled. Other times they have just raffled something blank off the rack at University Images.

PS This is pretty cool that we are all concerned about what region we are getting slotted into for the tourney. #GoodProblemToHave

what do you mean not any jerseys available? They still replace a set every year even if they don't update them? For the UMD series earlier this year it was the first version of the new style white home jersey.

In other news, the WCHA has suspended Michigan Tech D Cliff Watson one game for an elbowing incident against Bemidji State.
