Michigan Tech 2018 Off-season - The Next Step is Just Inches Away...

This set of Bauer golds is the second of two that Tech used in the late 1990s. Yet another set of jerseys where the "Huskies" crest got placed on the jerseys at a crazy angle. I can't believe someone at Tech doesn't just tell them what angle to place the crest. We are largely a TECHNOLOGICAL institution.... This set of 45 degree Huskies jerseys was worn 1997-2001. Ironically it was first worn by Andy Lewis in 1997-98 and was recycled without any changes to Matt Lewis (no relation) for the 1998-2000 seasons.

This set of jerseys was pretty much identical to the one that came before it. The most notable external change was the addition of Bauer's "flying-B" logo on the right chest which was not present on the previous set.

Michigan Tech has a new recruit. 17 year old Grant Docter. He's a defensemen that played defense for last years state championship team in Minnesota, Minnetonka. According to most, he's the second best defenseman on the team behind former NMU recruit, Josh Luedtke. I'll try to get a write up done soon.

As Tonka alum that watched many games last year on-line you should be quite happy with this pickup.

Many years ago, a memo went out from University Marketing & Communications that when using the full name of the Institution, one should never abbreviate "Technological" to "Tech". This was right around the time they had heartburn over some people supposedly thinking we were a junior college branch of UMich.

Thanks for the information. I'm very happy to see we got him. I'm sure he will be a good fit for us and a big help in our defense.

Hard to believe that real hockey is almost here. We're going to keep it golden all the way to the puck drop on Friday. Presenting the #2 is this gold Rawlings mesh and knit jersey from the early 1980s. I received some info from Dave Ellis that the Cooperall jerseys were worn throughout the CCHA span of three seasons (1981-84). So that means this jersey was likely last worn during the 1981 season and Tech's run through the NCAA tourney. That appearance would the last one for a long time until Tech finally returned to the NCAA tourney in 2015 losing 3-2 in OT to SCSU, ending a 30+ year absence.

These vintage jerseys are pretty tough to come by and I could look a long time and never find one. This was another lucky one that simply came and found me. A game worn jersey dealer acquired it and knowing that I collected Tech jerseys he reached out to me before they were made available to the public. I feel very fortunate to be able to locate, acquire, preserve and share these historical items with other fans of Tech hockey. Tomorrow brings us to #1. If you've ever been to my site, I'm sure you can guess which jersey it will be, but that's a story to share tomorrow. I can't wait for the puck drop.

Bryce Luker.....?
Unfortunately since I didn't have any of his Tech jerseys, I had to make another choice.

I decided to go with Tony Esposito. For whatever reason, Tony hasn't remained close to Huskies Hockey, but in spite of this, his jersey was an easy choice for our last day before the first game puck drop. Since I'm writing this from the road on my lunch break (the Culver's in Forest Lake, MN did not disappoint) I'm just going to go with a bit of a cut and past job from my website. - Enjoy!

Like some of the other rare items in the collection, this jersey was found on Ebay. It was acquired from a vintage clothing dealer in the Chicago area. The jersey was listed as a 1950s or 1960s "Western Michigan Huskies Hockey Jersey". This is the second MTU jersey I've picked up which was listed as Western Michigan. Aside from people thinking that every college team in Michigan is the Wolverines, I'm not sure why Huskies jerseys seem to turn up as Western Michigan.

One item about this jersey that caught my eye right away was the crest and the way the "H" is standing alone from "uskies". I had never seen this crest style before on a jersey or in photographs. There is no tagging left in the jersey that hints at the manufacturer. The only remaining tag is a "48" which is beginning to come apart and the "8" is only partially present.

The big break in researching this jersey came from fellow MTU alumni. I shared photos of the jersey with the MTU alumni newsletter and asked if anyone had memories or photos of a similar style. Two key photos were submitted by readers. The first was a 1967 Michigan Tech yearbook photo showing Tony Esposito wearing a jersey with the separated "H" crest with a black outline. This photo is important because it also showed a defect in the cresting's black outline on the left side of the letter "k". A second photo of a similar #19 gold jersey confirmed the photo match. The #19 jersey did not have the same defect making the jersey in question a match to the Esposito yearbook photo.

While the previous owner had purchased the jersey from an estate sale and had no previous history of the jersey, the fact that it turned up in Chicago is not a surprise given Tony's long career with the Chicago Blackhawks and his strong alumni ties to the organization.

Re: Michigan Tech 2018 Off-season - The Next Step is Just Inches Away...

Honestly my only other option was Looch. Still a sweet jersey that I begged the owner to sell me for many years, but he's no Tony, and the back story isn't nearly as cool.

That was one of Mroz's hangups. I guess he's never heard of MIT, Georgia Tech or Cal Tech. Now that he's gone, we should go back to using Tech and the stacked MTU logo. Michigan Technological University makes a lousy bumper sticker.
