Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Oval

Re: Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Ov

No Vallis.

Mel loves the copper country.

Mel P 8-1-16 show notes are below:
Players starting to come back - know it's close, Gillies/Blacklock
Busy working on scheduling for future years, with B1G adding a team, trying to adjust UW games
UMD times not official, but pretty sure Sat 7PM, Sunday 4PM CST
Michigan game times still up in the air
Mel thinks it's important we travel down state to play in front of alumni, helps with recruiting too

On Mankato:
Mel careful about what to say, doesn't have all details, has formerly applied to NCHC, a lot TBD
Mel hoping we're in the same conference when the dust settles
Mel has talked to Hastings, he gets it, NCHC meetings in August
Tech needs to continue to strengthen ourselves in college hockey world, less concerned about what's going on outside, Mel's job and goal
We're always going to play good teams
Thought there'd be some reshuffling, with ASU or what happens in AK
Dirk - Tech/NMU/LSSU on a bit of an island, not in conversations like these, maybe due to travel
Mel - yes/no, but you can get here, 3 flights daily etc, all three are good hockey cities

Vallis will likely not be back, no more eligibility, have been several appeals to the initial decision, not sure why Max is diff. than other situation that were granted another year of eligibility
Heinonen - Tyler injured most of last month of season, coming along ahead of schedule, been in Houghton all summer, hasn't been on ice yet

Starting goalie decision to start season?
Wintjes-senior, Kero-RS Sophomore, Redmond-Freshmen
Last year we played everyone with Canadian games, none this year
1st day of a school we can go on the ice 2 hours per week, new rule this year

Why do Tech or other schools not play D3 teams?
Was in talks with Stevens-Point, couldn't' work out dates.
We want it early, first couple weekends. They don't start until later.
Would have no problem doing that with any team. It does count as one of 34 games, Canadian have exemption.

Feedback from NHL camps?
Try to talk to every team that hosted a player.
They liked compete, skill, conditioning level.

Any rule changes of note for next season?
No OT change
Can challenge a goal for off-sides or too many men

Is McNaughton cup in town?
It was sent down to Twin Cities last weekend. Mankato had a blueline golf outing. It'll be back in town, hopefully for Alumni reunion.
It'll be around, hopefully a couple public things.

TV Coverage?
We'll have some. B1G coverage is part of why times are being decided. GLI. NMU games have a contract. Anywhere from 4-10 games.

Who will wear C and A?
Great leadership crew. Watson/Neville/Hanna have been captains before and done a great job.
Baltus added to that group. Look for guys that do things right on/off ice. Good students/citizens.
Happens that they area all seniors. A number of guys got votes.
Can't wait to see Baltus/Jackson/Steman all take the next step this year.
Baltus confidence level has grown each year.

Do you see Neville expanding his offense role? Yes, last year with Vallis/Sturos, that line was really good. Neville has been here all summer, great shape.

Last year we couldn't improve our PWR in WCHA play, will that be better?
Yes. Looking at non-conference games, we will played good teams non-conference. Other WCHA teams need to do the same. Really helps the league overall.

Dirk joked he asked for hard email questions. Rumors are going around that you will leave for Michigan when the job opens.
Red will be around for a long time. Just spoke with him last week. He's in great shape. Mel's got 5 years left on his contract. Mel's wife and him are extremely happy here.

Thoughts on UND/Minn playing in Vegas?
It's great. It looked like we were going to do a tournament in Vegas, but a big convention, CES shifted their dates, so hotel room prices shot up. Now UND/Minn will have a game there. Preliminary discussions to play a tourney in Vegas. ASU, MTU, Denver, Providence, could be a tournament next year.

Mel spoke on some hockey alum experiences/awards.
Get your season tickets. Lamp lighter will be back this year. Expanding East end is infancy stages, seen some plans from a firm for ideas down the road.
Will have recruits coming in over next three weeks.

Hmmm, I might have to listen to that, some interesting tidbits in those notes...

First of all, the phrasing you're using when saying that Mel says he hopes we're in the same conference as MSU when the dust settles. Very interesting way to state that.

Also, a Las Vegas tourney, for Tech, next season? Hmmmmmm

Not much more said than what was printed below...Las Vegas tourney in 2017-18 sounds interesting to me...

Re: Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Ov

A hockey tournament involving Tech might be the one thing that would lure me back to Vegas for an entire weekend - college hockey, at least one expensive dinner, a little blackjack, and a cigar or three. I could see it. That snazzy new arena will probably be half-empty at best though (and that would be if the casinos give out A LOT of comped tickets).

Even on a free ticket, do you think Vegas visitors are going to come watch ASU, MTU, Denver, Providence? If you told folks they could watch "ASU, MTU, DU and PC" play hockey for free, do you think the typical visitor would even know what schools those acronyms represent? Maybe the average schmoe might get ASU since they play football and bouncy ball.

Vegas odds today would show 2:1 that MTU would have the most fans attending out of those four schools and maaaaaybe more than the other three combined based on what I saw at the ASU tourney. Long way for PC fans to travel who are used to 1 hour trips in Hockey East, Denver never travels anywhere and ASU fans don't even attend their own tourney, in their own city.

I don't know how big the fan base is for PC but I certainly think they'd give MTU a run for the money simply because Las Vegas is a great reason for PC fans to travel more than an hour, especially with their National Championship in the recent past, etc.

You get groups of guys liquored up enough, give them free tickets, and you'll get some to go. They'll be disappointed in the lack of fighting though, unless there's a serious reason for a brawl to erupt (Which might happen with UND/UMN, but it's highly unlikely between MTU, ASU, DU, and PC).

Friars and Devils on the same ice - it's the eternal battle of good vs evil. How could there not be fighting.

Re: Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Ov

I'm wondering, based on Vallis not coming, if that means an extra forward will be brought in this year.

Re: Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Ov

Pederson was the extra brought in, just listened to the show, you all realize we have the best coach in all of div 1 hockey. We are truly lucky to have such a great coach leading our program.....

I wish people would stop asking him about the Michigan job. He's not going to answer,... really he can't. But I do agree... and he needs a big raise as well.
And I'm pumped for the arena expansion.

The "going back to Michigan" Scheiße needs to stop. I'll admit I was worried it was a stepping stone for the first contract, but now that he's signed a big extension with even bigger poison pills (which Michigan could pay, but they've now got the football rebirth and potentially Harbaugh's salary to fuss about), the fact is - Mel. Is. Not. Going. Back. In part thanks to Red's longevity and in part thanks to the (now departed) Dave Brandon. Not sure how else to drill that into the Yost Rowd...err, I mean Retards'...heads.

Sorry, but you don't know that. I think it's highly unlikely since every year Red stays makes Mel another year older but who knows...I'm not really worried about anymore though because if it does happen, MTU has shown support and will hopefully continue to pony up 250k+ a year for s new coach...

Granato is making roughly 500 at Wisconsin and we will have to come up to that level pretty soon, or risk being an also ran once again.

If you were the coach and someone, anyone, offered you double, you'd be foolish not to seriously consider it. Having said that, it certainly depends on the situation and Tech has been pretty darned good in the way they support the program and the support the community gives, but you can never say never, no matter who you are.
I would put Tech at the very top in terms of support for the program in all of college hockey. I would doubt that jim Harbaugh is more recognized in AA than Coach Pearson is in the Copper Country.

I'm not sure Wisconsin is the right way to look at things. They were in a crap hole and needed to get out...first I need to see other programs actually follow suit.
Most of the top coaches are in the $300k area right now so we shall see.

I have to wonder if Mel would get frustrated if the WCHA becomes a one bid league. With so many non-conf road games and Mankato possibly leaving, it seems hard for the WCHA to compete and get a couple in the top 16 of the PWR routinely. If the only way Mel has a shot for his team to get to the NCAA and make noise is by winning the WCHA tournament, I'd think a place like Michigan could be attractive with a reasonable shot at winning his own NCAA championship as a head coach.

I agree, Mel isn't the only good hockey coach out there. Plenty of good candidates. Have to make sure they find the right one.

That being said, let's not put the cart before the horse. ha ha.

Re: Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Ov

We're in a position now where we have the best chance to win a regular and/or playoff championship. That being said, I wouldn't be shocked to see a move to another conference if the opportunity arises.

Mel has a lengthy contract with a very heavy buyout clause.
