MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

That's exactly what I figured - probably book Delta in-and-out of ANC, and then handle the FAI leg separately with Alaska Air. Looks like that piece can be done roundtrip or one-way (if I do the train back) for less than $200. The train, however, is a bit more expensive than I hoped.

In the pre-merger days, I thought Northwest used to have a direct from DTW to ANC, but it was always expensive and may have only been in the summer. Seems Delta has dropped that route, and now they make you connect in MSP or SEA.

Ah well, something to chew on for the next 9 months anyway.

That's the method we have done for both trips. The train is definitely an expensive choice, but definitely worth it for the unique views you're going to get. That said, I've now done it twice and most likely will fly both ways next time.

Speaking of travel, are any of y'all coming here later this season?

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

To those of you complaining about the camera work...it is admittedly hit or miss depending on who's doing the work on any given night and their experience level.

But...

The Carlson Center is absolutely terrible to try to film any sports event from. The camera has to be either really low, resulting in constant movement, or really high, which makes the players look like ants. Keep in mind that he building was:

A. Built 26 years ago
B. Not designed for sports in the first place

Until we figure out a way to renovate the Patty Center on campus into a D-1 level facility it just is what it is.

I've shot video in the Carlson Center, and in many buildings with more challenges than it presents. It's actually easy to get good stuff there, the sight lines are clean. There's no way you can blame the building for that presentation.

Priority one in hockey video for the lead camera is keeping the puck in the frame, and you couldn't even count on that during Saturday's game. The camera work is one thing, but the director was even worse - if the tight camera doesn't have the puck or the action, DON'T CUT TO IT. That's lesson 1 in our Video 101 remedial class for today.

That's the issue I had, it wasn't the angle of the camera or anything, it's that I spent as much time watching empty ice as I did watching the action because none of the camera operators seemed to have any clue how to keep the puck in frame.

Similar thing happened with the UAA games. The camera operator was okay having the puck in the very top of the screen when it was along the boards. The only issue with that is the score/time graphic was there so the play near the puck was blocked. Annoying.

Injury notes from the Mel Pearson show yesterday:
Injuries:
Blacklock is feeling well, should be good, we'll see
Jackson should be ready for practice this week, he's been skating, could be available this weekend
Steman - not sure, if he's not ready, he's close
Pedersen had a groin - getting close too
Ray Brice was on AK trip - but got hurt, he's questionable for this weekend

Saturday night was bad for that from UAA, Friday night's UAA broadcast and camera work was pretty good I thought, except for huge amounts of buffering or losing the feed.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

It would be good if someone could explain to me what interference is because obviously I don't know.
I believe, without looking, that we are now the most penalized team in NCAA D1 hockey.
I talked with the WCHA head of officiating (not really) and he told me interference is when a Huskies player touches the opposing player - two minutes. That's how they called the games in Alaska anyway.

Given the offensive support the Huskies have been giving Beef, can you imagine our record if our penalty kill wasn't as good as it is? So far this season the penalty kill is 92 for 109 (84.4%). Tech was 2 for 20 on the penalty kill in Alaska. Can you image if we played teams that were scoring on the power play at a 20-25% clip? One extra goal allowed in 3 of the 4 games would have cost us points in the standings. We could have come home from Alaska with four losses. Overall there were 44 power play opportunities in four games. The games were not that dirty, just poor "ticky-tack" officiating.

I still think the biggest BS call in all of hockey is the embellishment call when a player is tripped.
I've agreed with this for a long time. If there is a penalty on the play then embellishment is not possible. If an official feels a player embellished to make it look like a penalty, then no penalty occurred. YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH ON THE SAME PLAY!

I will fully admit to being a huge homer for Tech hockey. However on that particular play I was 20 feet way and they were coming right at me. It was a straight up trip and no part of that play was even remotely a dive.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Some thoughts on the trip for those of you maybe planning a future Alaska / Tech Hockey trip.

-- With the current train schedule, you'll only get to ride it going South (assuming you want to see all four games and they are played Fri/Sat). Currently during the winter the train only runs two days a week. North from Anchorage to Fairbanks on Saturday and then returns South-bound from Fairbanks to Anchorage on Sunday. For me, the train was one of the best parts of the trip. I fly a lot of places so taking the train, was a nice change of pace. Takes 12 hours vs 2 hours between the two cities the there was no comparison to the comfort of the train. Even with light snow and low visibility it was a great time.

-- The cost of a one-way flight from ANC to FAI and the train back (<$400) was LESS expensive than then drop fee for renting a car in ANC and leaving it in FAI ($400+ for the one way car rental drop fee). Car rental prices also go up and down as demand changes. I booked a car about a month in advance and then rebooked about a week before arrival and the price went down by ~$100. My car in Anchorage was just over $100 total for four days. Fairbanks was about 50% more for the same reservation length. When I am planning a trip well in advance I usually check car prices about every 7-10 days leading up to the trip. Since there is no cost to cancel the car reservation, you can just keep rebooking every time the price takes a substantial drop.

-- Air fares are all over the place and rise and fall like gas prices. However a multi-city ticket for ANC / FAI SHOULD price out similar to a round trip to either of those cities. For the booking rules it is called an "open jaw" ticket. If the distance between the two destination cities (the short leg of the triangle) is less than the distance from the original airport to either destination it SHOULD price like a round trip ticket. Where you may have a problem is that you may not find an airline that flies to both cities without a codeshare agreement and then you'll get hosed on the pricing.

-- There was plenty to do between the two cities. If I could do it over, I would have stayed longer in Anchorage - better weather, and just more to do in general. The locals said we got off easy with highs in the single digits this time of year in Fairbanks. It could have been much colder.

-- Overall I enjoyed the extended trip (other than the quadruple murder-suicide at my hotel before the Friday game in Fairbanks). That kind of put a damper on things at the end of the trip.

I checked into the multi city on Delta, and they do not fly the ANC FAI leg so I gave up on that. in addition if you look, some of the airline web sites advise you that booking the trip as 3 one ways might save you money. I haven't found that to be true. However, having said that, it's a huge pain to have to go back to ANC after the game on saturday. it costs you almost a full day. It's worth the extra 100 bucks if you ask me, just to get out of there promptly.

I take the train in Europe quite often but most of the time it goes 250- 300 kph so it doesn't take as long to get anywhere though flights are quite often cheaper. I like the train because it's not near as much hassle and leaves from downtown most of the time.

No, my life is stressful enough as it is.

:)
maybe but maybe not is the answer, but i'm sure JJ will come down.

BTW, for
Tech fans going down there. there is a direct from Detroit to hsv, but the cost is pretty high. about 420. if you go thru Atlanta, which I never recommend anyone go thru atlanta, it's 369 and if you go to Nashville and drive it's about 280. it's I think 2 hours from nashville, plus there are a lot more choices on flights as the Detroit flight to hsv leaves in the evening .
you can also go to nashville on southwest which is a hub for them.

I looked at it, but I won't be doing it this year. It was definitely cheaper to fly into BNA or BHM, but for a quick weekend trip, the cost of renting and refueling a car probably cancels out any substantial savings over flying direct into HSV. Now, if you take a little PTO and extend the trip out to spend a couple nights in Nashville as well, it makes a lot more sense. Especially since you probably won't need the car in Nashville.

I thought JJ said that he wasn't and was saving his travel budget for other trips this year. I'm sad that I didn't get to talk to him last season (saw him at rink level).

True - Unfortunately I don't think UAH is in the cards for this season. If I do another trip it will be either be to Notre Dame and/or any potential playoff / tourney games during the stretch run. The good part is that the opportunity comes up at least every other season now so there will be more chances down the road.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

I'm trying to finagle something with work that would let me go to the UAH series. One of our biggest suppliers has their engineering facilities in Huntsville and they invited us down to see the facility, so I am trying to work out a trip to tour their facilities on Friday and go to the games that weekend. Not sure it will happen but worth a shot.

I suggest using Kiwi.com to look for exotic cheaper itinerary options or matrix.itasoftware.com.

There's a couple of others also. Cheapo air is pretty good and I use Kayak at times too.
Also if you are using the train in Europe the polrail site can get you tickets on any of the major country rail lines and is cheaper than most of the other sites.
