Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

It's been deathly quiet on the assistant coach recruitment front. Has anybody seen any candidates about campus? I've got to think that the interview process is well underway.

I'm sure it is, why wouldn't it be quiet? I was last time. You're not going to hear much more than rumors since every candidate should currently have a position somewhere whether its with another NCAA program or in a junior league somewhere.

Questions for those in the know....

Is Lucchini Tech's best offensively skilled recruit of the Pearson era?
How to keep all the forwards happy this year, seems we have 5 extras that can play roles?
Who plays with Eick and Neville, P. Anderson seems slotted for a defensive water bug on RW.
Will Boeing be too good to leave out of the lineup?
Will Mason Blacklock grab the 1st line center spot.
Will Jackson, E. Anderson, Steman, Blacklock, and Neville be the centers in no particular order?
Will this be the year to take back the MacNaughton?
It's hard to say...Lucchini compares quite a bit with Petan. In Alex's last year of juniors he finished with 38-50-88 in 55 games as a 19 yo
Lucchini was 35-48-83 in 58 games as a 19 yo. The nice thing about Lucchini is he's listed at 6' instead of Petan's 5'-9"
He certainly seems like he should come in and be a talent on offense.

Eick & Neville? I have no idea, not sure about Anderson though...
Boeing? Yes I think he should be in the starting lineup until proven otherwise...
Blacklock? Center will be interesting. I wouldn't be surprised to see L'Esperance moved back to Center where he played in Juniors and if that happens, he could grab the top spot.
More on Centers...I've got Steman, L'Esperance, Neville and Jackson at top 4 centers right now in no particular order...
MacNaughton - You saying it that way makes me think like Michigan Tech has been the Pinky & the Brain of the WCHA for a long time...what are we going to try and this season Brain? The same thing we try and do every season Pinky, bring the MacNaughton home!

I know they are in a hurry to get someone on board.
I think that Steman or Neville will be our top two centermen. Then we'll see.

I'm also wondering when we will start giving the full cost of attendance money to players.

So... an extra $112.79 per year for snacks? This is Houghton were talking about. Its a fairly inexpensive place to live / attend.

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

it's all about being able to fly home to Nanaimo for Xmas.
No need to have flight money. There are plenty of Canadians who attend Tech. Just post on the ride board and tell them you need a ride down "The Road" to get home for Christmas.
Hey, my 150 bucks a month in rent was TOUGH man.
Should have moved across the Portage. My rent was $100/month for my own apartment. Now in truth it was a second floor unit with only two windows (one looked out UNDER the new roof which was built over the old roof at a steeper pitch and the other looked into the hallway) but it also had a screen door (to enjoy the cool evening breezes of Anytown, USA) and the low rent left me a ton of money for TopRamen noodles and Wal-Mart's Mountain Lighting. I didn't even have to wait for noodles to be on sale for 10/$1 I was so loaded with extra money. Also not buying text books was a huge money saver...

Fairly inexpensive? Have you seen the cost of tuition lately? Criminal how expensive it is to attend college these days.

No need to have flight money.

but flight money is a good chunk of the calculation.
it's apparently the reason that Auburn gets to fork out more CoA $$$ than OSU or BC, go figure. easier to get in and out of Columbus and Boston than wherever the hell Auburn is located. And international students get more than in-state.

what international students are playing D1 football/basketball that it even matters?

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

Sounds like Whitten had the NHL jerseys from LSSU's former players moved to more prominent places in the arena. Anyone else wish that Tech would move ours (which are "buried" in the hallways down below the stands, that lead to the players' facilities), to a more public place where you could see them without asking for a locker room/facilities tour? Or maybe they have been moved, and I haven't noticed? Or maybe Mel doesn't want to? Or maybe I'm being stupid (don't answer that)? :p ;)

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

As far as I know those jerseys are just blank store bought replicas (based on what I have seen from interviews done in front of them) and they are not really worth showing the public. There are better ways to highlight past players and plenty of cool things the team has squirreled away that would be much more interesting displays. Even something like the old Tech jerseys displayed in the suites hallway would be a great additional to the main level.

If we can't find any good game used Tech memorabilia to display, then we'll have to settle for a fireplace like UMD, or worst case a nacho cheese fountain with six kinds of cheeses. Hey, we should celebrate our nachos too!

Bleu cheese nachos? Consider me "in favor". ;)

But I see your point. If the jerseys are just replicas and not game-worn, well then...

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

This is the only image of seen of a numbered jersey. I believe this would be for Jim Storm as he is the only former Tech player to wear #43 with the Stars (10 games, 1995-96). I have no idea if this jersey is legit as I've never seen these up close. I believe the photo is from August 2009 when former Tech equipment mgr Mike Aldrich got his jersey on the wall.

I thought it was neat that LSSU had them on display (they were tucked back on the concourse near the stairs to each section if I remember correctly). Western Michigan has their alumni NHL jerseys along the main concourse at the top of the seating bowl (not hard to have them prominently placed in that building).

As an NMU fan, I was always a little jealous that NMU never had a display like that. Even more-so now that I know that even MTU has some form of NHL alumni jersey collection and NMU doesn't.

If I had the money, I would love to get NHL replicas stitched for the alumni and have them displayed at the Berry.

One of the first things that Bergeron did at BG was move the historical artifacts out into the public hallway where everyone could enjoy it. The east hallway in the ice arena is jam packed with that kind of stuff now. The number of fans that pause and look at all of it is a testament to his wisdom. There is a lot of history in the program and it should be on display for everyone to see instead of being tucked away in the player facilities.
