Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

Depending on his replacement, I'm going to hold out hope that this will be a good thing in the long run as we begin to flood the USHL with agents devoted to furthering the work of Mel.
Yes, the replacement will be key because it seems evident that having former assistants in charge in the USHL can only help.

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

Two years, two coaches lost to head coaching job promotions. Another gold star on Mel's resume if you ask me as it looks like he is developing more than the players on the roster.

Although I don't have the slightest clue who will fill this role, I will be interested to see who we are able to get. I think Muckalt had a unique mix of background that could appeal to potential players.
- Played for Pearson at Michigan
- Was highly successful in college, got him all the way to the NHL
- Had NHL experience to share with players
- Passion for the game
- Coached other junior teams
I wonder if Tech's NCAA appearance last season might be enough to land us a good "lead assistant" rather than Mel having to develop one. Maybe a current lead assistant from a smaller program? Someone from a Canadian junior team staff? The Huskies currently have a pretty good batch of talent waiting in the wings, but that can dry up real quick... just ask the Badgers.

Anyone want to start throwing out names?

They already have a good "lead assistant" in Joe Shawhan. I'm sure there will be plenty of qualified candidates applying.

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

As a program, when you help out the assistants by doing what you can to get them a promotion and a raise, other people notice. It's the right thing to do. Good luck to Coach Bill, I will especially miss the come on over mentality.
Kind of the opposite of some programs I can name isn't it.

WAH!!!!!!!

he will be missed. but good luck for him, he will do well.

On July 1 of 1925, the greatest coach in college hockey history was born in Toronto.

Happy 90th birthday, John MacInnes.

Lots of questions. Do they target a younger guy or older? Someone whose focus is on offense, like Muckalt's was? Someone with western Canadian recruiting ties, like Muckalt had?

I think you want a younger guy (by that I mean around Bill's age and a little younger), probably someone with ties to western Canada.

Of interest, during my research into potential candidates, I found two former Huskies coaching that I had not noticed before.

Brad Patterson (1998-2002) has been an assistant at Youngstown (USHL) for 4 seasons
Jason McKee (1997-1999) has been the head coach of Spruce Grove (AJHL) for 5 seasons including coach of the year the last 2 seasons...

The Youngstown head coach (Noreen) has left the team so Brad may be available if he doesn't move in to the head coaching position or doesn't stay on with the new head coach.

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

It really depends on who applies. Remember, Shawhan's name came up early in the search last year, and I suspect he was personally encouraged to apply. If Mel has anyone in mind, I'm sure he will make phone calls.

It really is hard to know what he will find important in this hire and who he has connections with to have an inside track on prying away from wherever they are currently.

There are many different directions this could go from a head coach at a lower junior league like the NAHL, maybe even a western canadian league to an assistant in the USHL or even a current D1 assistant somewhere.

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

If anyone wants a really cheap Chris Conner jersey that he actually wore with the Dallas Stars, www.meigray.com has four jerseys reduced for a limited time to just $99 + shipping. That is a freaking steal for an NHL game jersey. When they are gone, they're gone. I would buy them, but as the Beverly Hills Cop Axel Foley once said "I already have three in my bag (collection)..."
FYI,

I would be very surprised if Ellsworth even applies, based on previous insights.

Agreed. I don't think he'll apply at this time.

Happy July 4th to Husky Nation. I'm U.P. bound for 10 days in the morning. I'll be in beautiful Copper Harbor Saturday night enjoying the fireworks.

$750 for a guy who hasn't played an NHL game yet?

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

les could speak to this more, but I think he has become much more than a goalies coach. he does a fair amount of recruiting and scheduling. plus I would imagine his personality would be one the players would find easy to work with.
