Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Tell you right now getting sent to UAA is death. They have a tendency to rope-a-dope you for two periods, then explode for 4 goals in the third. It's like clockwork.
That's because the visiting team falls asleep at that point. Most teams are not used to playing the third period at 1am (according to their body's internal clock).

Everyone at MTU needs to be writing Geof and the rest of the UAH team and fans a thank-you card this morning. Rivalry can do amazing things for a team... So without further delay...

Thank-you UAH.
Thank-you Mankato.
Thank-you Northern (Ugh that felt awful...)
Ferris... What the F you C K?!?!?!?

Can you imagine how pleased as punch EVERYONE will be if the two AK teams finish 4th and 5th...

One more night of scoreboard watching.

Need _airbanks to lose at least a point for Tech to control it's own seeding destiny. One win for Tech next week and home ice is reality.

If Alaska sweeps Ferris and NMU sweeps BG, we are in the position of a must win of at least one or we are at alaska or Northern. Winning one at Mankato will not be easy, as they need every one to get a bid and losing to us likely puts them out.

Even if Ferris wins tonight, I think tech needs at least one point next weekend. With Alaska and UAA playing, one of them has to win each game. Even if one swept and left the other behind Tech, NMU and BGSU have winable games next weekend to make up ground and get ot at least 28 points (at least for the one who wins tonight). That means it's likely that either UAA or Alaska and either NMU or BGSU will get to 28 points. Tech does okay in some head to head tie breakers, but once the tie involves 3 or more teams, we start losing out by virtue of number of wins and record against superior teams. A single win next weekend changes everything because then the fact that UAA and Alask play each other works in Tech's favor (one has to lose each game).

I had zip to do with that. I sure liked it, though.

In other recruiting news, Mitch Reinke and the Stillwater Ponies upset 15th ranked White Bear Lake to reach the Section 4AA Finals to face #3 ranked Hill-Murray.
Mitch Rienke and Stillwater are making their first trip to the state tournament after another upset victory...this time over Hill-Murray.

So Ferris shat themselves and UA_ continues to come up with big games down the stretch.

Tech does control it's own destiny for home ice, but placement depends on how Tech and UA_ do next week. Tech holds the tiebreaker over UAA since we only played them twice, we would have equal wins with equal points (unless we got two ties with Mankato), and we have the better win percentage vs. Ferris (assuming they come out of the weekend #1 or we gain at least 2 pts at Mankato to have the same win percentage as UAA vs. Mankato. Tech holds the HTH record tiebreaker over BG.

Long story short, Tech needs at least a split AND needs UAA to take the majority of points from UA_. Everything else doesn't matter.
The problem is we could wind up with UA_ in our barn for the Quarterfinal series depending on what BG does with BSU.

This league is ridiculous right now. I think it's going to be fun for years to come if the recruiting around the league continues to get better.

A win or two takes care of a lot of things, but there's another option in case Tech can't get it done. An Alaska Sweep (I wouldn't bet against them right now) combined with a BSU/BGSU split would put Tech in a 2 way tie with BGSU. that would mean home ice even if Mankato sweeps. Of course, that assumes that Ferris can actually take care of business this weekend. BSU getting 3 points would also work. If BSU sweeps then they are in a tie with Tech, but they own tie-breaker 3 or 4 or something based on their record against Mankato.

Or Tech could just win.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

The other interesting thing is Mankato now has everything to play for...McNaughton Cup, top seed and NCAA pwr.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Thanks for nothing Ferris...

I guess now it's win and you're at home. Lose and we're rolling the dice and getting who knows what. Time for MSU to have a down weekend and for Tech to just leave it all on the ice. I'll be attending Friday night, but will have to miss Saturday.

Five points and just two games remaining separate home ice from staying home. I don't recall any league being this tight this late into the season before in college hockey.

Funny how the NCHC commissioner was patting himself on the back for having his top two teams tied. The WCHA really needs to pump their own tires and brag about this.

That's all the NaCHo does. ;)

If Ferris sweeps they win the cup as Mankato loses the tiebreaker. If Alaska sweeps and Ferris sweeps we are forth even if we lose both, unless BG sweeps in which case we go there. Even if we win one, if Ferris, Alaska, and BG sweep we finish fifth, according to sioux sports.

No doubt they will...they'll just tell you about it in mid March.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

To be honest, I'd rather see Mankato win the MacNaughton. Unfortunately, Ferris is playing a sagging LSSU team, and we need the points in Mankato.

The way I read the WCHA website, Mankato wins the tiebreaker over Ferris. They've got 1 more conference win right now. Plus they've got head-to-head based on sweeping Ferris a few weeks back.
