Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

John. Scott. :D

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I live for the day when a Tech alum in the NHL is on sportscenter for something other than a cheap shot or a fight.

Don't be silly. They don't show hockey highlights on SportsCenter!

MTU announcing today they have hired a "Director of New Media". Is that a business way of saying he gets to drive the video board?

The question we should be asking now is, "Who is going to directing the fax machines, telegrams, and the carrier pigeon fleet?" We can't forget about the other side of the rink which may not be into "New Media."

Ryan J
And he's coming to Tech from NMU. And he will do an outstanding job.

He's the ex Husky who is about to be suspended by the NHL for his cheap shot elbow to the head of Boston's Loui Erickson last night.

No ****? I didn't know that. Derderder

I said a number of un-kind things about Scott last night, and I'm thinking them now.

Actually, he's a pretty good guy. And he made some great strides as Tech to even become a prospect. Worked really hard and earned his shot. He's the guy other teams and fans love to hate, but you would love to have him on your squad.

And to be fair to him, he's only doing what he's asked to do. And I'm sure its not the easiest thing in the world to hit someone and not make contact with their head when you've got 6" on him.

Pronger Physics™? Scott didn't need to lead with the elbow though, that's really the crux of this issue.

Chris Conner made the Not Top 10 for falling on his face during a penalty shot. So we got that going for us.

ETA: Oh, and Kevin Genoe gave up that 170-footer at Magness.

I wouldn't want him on my team. He adds zero value. Fighting is not a deterrent in today's NHL. Guys are getting run constantly. I saw a Minnesota Wild game with John Scott and Derek Boogard both in the lineup and Steve Ott hammered Peter Sykora and Gonchar took a flying leap at Cal Clutterbuck.

There have been a few times Tech has made it for good plays, that I remember off the top of my head. Chris Conner had goal make the top 10 several years ago at the GLI, and I didn't Petan's goal from his knee against MN make it last season?

I don't know. The Bruins have their big guys that do dirty work, but I'm not interested in Scott alongside any of them. I just wish that McQuaid had done better in the fight. That was some aikido noise he pulled in the takedown.

GFM <— just fine with Chara, McQuaid, Lucic, et al. But you can have Shawn Thornton.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

John Scott is a pretty nice guy off the ice. I knew him when I was at Tech, had several classes with him, even worked on a project with him (and Conner, actually), went out drinking with him a few times. He was always very friendly and he was pretty dang smart too.

He obviously shouldn't be elbowing opposing players in the skull, but I do believe some of the tweets I've seen today saying that he is genuinely remorseful, and that he feels bad about what he's done. I don't remember him ever being involved in a dirty play before this...he's always been called a goon, and a fighter, but other than that, I don't think he's ever been suspended for dirty play before now, at least that I can remember.

It would be his first suspension I believe. I'm still amazed his "enforcer" skills are enough to offset is lack of NHL level hockey skills.

I heard Rolston was playing Big John much more frequently because he had a great camp and improved his skating. If you look at the number of games he's played this season, that does seem to be the case. Not saying that he's an NHL caliber forward, but on this year's Sabres, he's not the worst liability.
