Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I can't blame anyone for apathy, I think there's plenty of hockey fan alumni that are in that group. I'm not there yet, I haven't forgoten how happy we'd be with a split with the #6 team just a coupld years ago. We were in a deep hole.

A couple things from today's Mel Pearson show, it seems like between the lines Mel really wishes he was getting more from Seniors. These are Jamie recruits, hard when upperclassmen aren't contributing like you kind of need to be successful.

Also, for the apathetic, you might want to give the questions segment a listen if the pod cast is posted. Mel does a good job of explaining needs, selling hope etc. We can't forget it's his 3rd year, not only is he looking for skill, but he needs the correct leaders on the ice too. It'll get better.

I've thought that too!

I think no one realized how deep the hole was until recently. Mel did talk today about the steps to being good. We have done the first step, now we need to do the second. and boy it does take patience.

For those that don't care so much. I've been there. it runs in cycles. Nothing like a winning record to change things.
Honestly, I think Mel is the best coach since MacInnes though. If anyone can do it, he can, and I think he will. I think maybe tough losses are harder to take than the one sided ones.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

The different turnaround Coach is talking about is being good consistently, not just every 2-3 years.
I still like our chances for home ice if:

1 goalies step up to their capability, 2 really good ones in Copley and Phillips.
2. Power play must start executing to provide a goal or 2 a game.
3. I would rotate 3rd / 4th lines just as the goalies until you finalize your playoff go to lineup.
Vallis and Baltus need to play too.

Here's the Mining Gazette's article on Devin's commitment.

Devin-itely a future Husky

Hancock’s Kero commits to Michigan Tech hockey program

January 29, 2014

HOUGHTON - Like brother, like sister, like cousin, like uncle.

Devin Kero is going to be a Husky.

The 2012 Hancock High graduate publicly announced last weekend he will be joining older brother Tanner as a member of the Michigan Tech hockey team in the near future.

With superb numbers in the British Colombia Hockey League for the Merritt Centennials (2.39 goals against, .920 save percentage in 34 games), Devin received interest from a number of schools - including but not limited to Air Force, Lake Superior State, Brown and Quinnipiac - but couldn't pass up the chance to join Tanner, as well as cousin Blake Hietala, at Tech.

"It has always been my dream to play at Michigan Tech," Devin Kero said, joining older sister Jordanna (volleyball) and uncle Ryan Markham (hockey, 2001-05). "I watched them since I was little, been going to games since I was a kid. I love Michigan Tech."

Until Kero signs a National Letter of Intent, coaches and athletes affiliated with Michigan Tech (including Tanner) are not allowed to comment on potential recruits.

Kero will be able to sign an NLI in April.

But Devin said he sought advice from Tanner and Hietala, and all the responses kept coming back positive.

"It really helped to get (Tanner's) perspective on playing in front of family and friends every night," Kero said. "We just talked about what it's like under the coaching staff, how the players get along and how the program really ran.

"I just really weighed all the pros and cons. A chance to come back home, I really couldn't turn it down."

Devin said he has been thinking about sporting the Husky sweater since he started skating at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena for high school games.

With two years of juniors under his belt (Kero played with the Coulee Region [Wis.] Chill in the North American Hockey League last season) each opportunity was devoted to making it back home for four years of Husky hockey.

"The light at the end of the tunnel was always to get to there," Kero said. "In high school, then in juniors the past year. My goal has always been to get back to Tech."

Kero said he plans on enrolling in the 2014 fall semester - "That's not 100 percent yet, but that's the plan," he said - and will get to play one year with Tanner on the roster as well.

Devin acknowledged that the battle for playing time will be tough with three goaltenders (two sophomores and a freshman) currently on the Tech roster, but that challenge will be present at any school.

"Obviously I can get quicker and stronger still," Kero said. "But the big thing is really playing consistently, giving your team a chance to win every night. juniors has really helped with that, playing so many games each season, you can focus on your consistency."

Until he comes back to the Copper Country, Devin said he plans on making the most out of his time in Merritt (where there is currently no snow on the ground).

But he is beyond excited knowing a Husky sweater is waiting for him.

"Since high school, you picture yourself in that Husky uniform performing in front of big crowd at a college arena," Kero said. "I can't wait."

That seems extremely silly on the NCAA's part that current players can't comment on a player who has verbally committed.
Agreed. Article today about 13 year old female soccer players being heavily recruited. Geesh!.

As far as BGSU. They are facing much the same sort of situation we are. They like their defense, and they play very well defensively, they like the penalty kill, ( though Lssu did score a shorty on them) but the pp is poor and the playing with the lead marginal. Now that Carpenter is back he has been scoring a lot of goals.
Two very important games, given Huntsville is at alaska.
I expect it to be low scoring.

Coaches can't either, not until they have signed that LOI to play.

Vallis and Baltus need to play too.

I was quite upset when Baltus switched his commitment to Tech from UAA, when Shyiak was fired. I see he has only 1 goal in 20 games, and is a -5 on the ice. Does he show more promise to you than what the coach sees in him?

I knew that and I accept that but a current player should not be bound by those silly rules? A current player can't comment on his younger brother verbally committing? So Stupid.

As are many NCAA rules. I agree!

I saw in USCHO's WCHA column today it said that you guys haven't played in the state of Ohio since 1984?!? I understand your hatred for the Buckeye state, but is that right?

Why would they? No Bowling Green, OSU or Miami in conference? Not much interest in any of those schools making another trek to the UP in a given season.

Don't confuse us with Michigan and or State fans. I have no beef with Ohio.

I think that it is one of the few things that both Michigan and State fans have gotten right! :p

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Finally some scoring tonight, a much needed road W!

Mel's postgame interview:
It was a nailbiter for Mel, don't make thigns easy, should've had a better 3rd, didn't want to give them life
But we haven't played with a lot of leads
Huge 2 points against a good team at home
Pheonix excelent job, a few key saves
Guys confidence helped with finishing the nice plays early for goals, D. Johnstone big timeplayer, changed our PP a little
Gould great play in neutral zone and got to the net, good for Malcomb
Vallis has a good stick, but has hockey smarts, may not be abel to play him back to back, but good job tonight
GOod hockey game until the craziness of last 5 minues, up/down good scoring chances both sides,
have felt better at times for some Losses this year didn't practice Wed. so will see how conditioning is tomorrow
J. Johnstone good tonight, used his speed, Rix/Vallis also on that line, good
Huge 2 points, they're fighting for home ice, nice bounce back game after last Saturday
Pheonix really good, unforunate the last one went in, handled puck well helping our Dmen
Goaltending need to be consistent and get better each game,
