Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Moral victories are a thing of the past according to Mel. We want wins. This is not a slam against Shirtless. He does a tremendous job with the recruiting round up. I love reading his write ups. We are lucky to have a guy like that. Trust me, i'm trying to remain positive. I will be in Bowling Green to watch them.
I'm on your side, I was trying point out some positives but in the end, the PP, offense and record are unacceptable. I know they are close but at the same time I've felt that way on and off for a decade...

I dunno, I'd say this is the closest to turning the page since I've been a fan. We've only been blown out once. I can't remember another season with so many close games. I'm still full of koolaid.

this is also the first season without Minnesota, North Dakota, St. Cloud, etc...

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I expect a big SWEEP by Tech this weekend. Let's say 4-2, 4-3.

I hope you're right. I wonder how the attendance will be this weekend, $5 youth tickets should get some more people in the door Saturday.

I was having this discussion today, I'm pretty sure it's kids with a Keweenaw youth team hockey jersey that get in for $5. But I'll buy a couple kids tix anyway...

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Big weekend for Michigan Tech to show it learned from the trip to Ferris State and they really need to turn the corner on scoring as the amount of season ahead of them continues to shrink.

Agreed. We'll see if the extra week off helped with PP adjustments.

In other news, my sources are reporting Hancock, MI native Devin Kero (Tanner's younger brother) has agreed to join the Huskies next season. He had offers from Air Force and Lake Superior State. He's currently playing in the BCHL for the Merritt Centennials.

Interesting...if true, he could be one of 5 goalies on the roster in 2015-2016?

EDIT: Not sure when this happen but he's listed as committed to Michigan Tech on the BCHL.ca website:

The only way I can figure that out is if one or both of Copley and Phillips are leaving, or Redmond is no longer coming.

Yeah, or Wintjes is leaving for a better opportunity?

2012-13 Pheonix Copley
2012-13 Jamie Phillips
2013-14 Matt Wintjes
2014-15 Devin Kero
2015-16 Angus Redmond

Quite the logjam at Goalie.

It has been confirmed via twitter from Devin himself.

Redmond's numbers have evened out (seems he's lost his job to an older goalie), and Kero's numbers are actually really good for a rookie.

Still, if fall 2015 is supposed to be the freshman year for these recruits, then, IMO, the odds of Copley and/or Phillips leaving in summer 2014 are high. If one of them leaves this summer, then the other will stay for his junior year, I think. Regardless, this will leave Mel's staff with more decisions to make.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I was going to post this earlier form the Mining Gazette article, but I thought it just shows Mel's furstration at this point.

"It is the good and the bad," Tech coach Mel Pearson said. "The good thing is that we have given ourselves a chance to win in every game and the bad is that we haven't found a way to win. We are playing just well enough to lose.

"I have never seen anything like it in college hockey."

Good and much needed W tonight. What was attendance? Looked kind of empty.

Mel's postgame interview:
Got off to a slow start, maybe because of bye
We took early penalty too, they skate and move the puck well and they cam after us. Phillips gave us a chance to hang around.
First Ferris goal, off Hietila, tough break, tied it right away
2nd goal had guys in right position, but couldn't corral the puck, good to limit them to 2 goals
Pietila/Sturos/d. Johnstone line accounts for all 3 gaols, good to have D. Johnstone back, Sturos played extremely well, look out for Reid, a lot of positives for him
Pietila, didn't like his penalties, we'll talk about that, but strong play, worked hard, like him at center, always around the puck
Good patience on GWG, big time goal,
Showed the guys shot chart 28-10 attempted after 1, Jamie had 14 saves, he had 17 in whole game Sat @ Ferris, we looked rusty after 1
Too deliberate on 5x3, missed the net, had some shots, have to do better/score
Did some good things on PP, looked sloppy at other times
We'll talk abotu golie, Jamie did good, make a couple big saves in 3rd after turnovers, really good in 1st when we were flat
We'll see some fresh legs tomorrow for sure
We'll be better tomorrow, youth hockey tonight, $5 tickets, skate with the huskies

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Yeah, it didn't look good attendance wise. HUGE win though.

Nice win, and great to see Reid finally putting the puck in the net. Go get 'em again tomorrow night.

2 points are 2 points. Need to make it 4.

The Merritt Centennials tweeted that Devin committed for 2014/15 or 2015/16, we'll see.

From Muckalt's twitter, it looks like we're wearing this years creme GLI jerseys tonight. I'm a fan, they look good!

Go Huskies!!!

Got to see a bit of Michigan vs Michigan State and Wisconsin vs Ohio State on the Big Ten Network last night. I wonder how Michigan likes being upstaged by Minnesota and Wisconsin in the new conference. :D

A lot of stuff wasn't working tonight, but PP just killed us, by not converting all those chances in a row or taking penalties while on the PP.

I think it would've been a lot different game if Gould's post was a goal instead, so close.

Mel's postgame interview:
They're a good team, showed their bounce back,
There's critical moments, did not like our penalties, especially early
Key time in 2nd, they score a goal on a giveaway, Gould hits crossbar, critical juncture in the game
NOt much going on tonight, they did a good job defensively, we eleminated a lot of their chances
Didn't seem to have the energy/drive/zip, maybe need to learn to handle success
We weren't in sync or together bringing it up ice on the PP, takes energy otu of team when you don't have success, would rather play 5x5 against Ferris
Hats off to Ferris, solid effort from their goalie, they had more authority than our team
Can't have our best players takign penalties, Petan, Johnstone, Blake took some this weekend
we let them get to us and get under our skin instead of just playing
BG a good hockey team, they got one of their beetter players back, every game so critical
Dirk thought split against #6, we'll take it Mel - no, we want more as a team/coaches
We need to learn waht it takes to play real good teams on a weekly basis
Jamie was good, didn't have to do much, solid, not many good scoring opportunities from either team
Their team rallied around their goalie change, Williams, and played hard for him
Special night, thanks to fans, bigger crowd of year, apologize for loss and effort we put forward, unacceptable
Good to see the skate with huskies and lines for autographs, giving back to community, we have good guys on a our team, put aside L and enjoy moment with kids
