Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

Try Mike Usitalo.

He's only 20 something games in and they've been happy with his defensive play; little early to start worrying about his chances when they likely have plans for him to be there three years.

And once you're on Calumet, you probably heard Erkilla is back from Marquette and is playing for CHS this year. Also likely Tech will be watching both Storm (switching back to forward this year) and Jacques this year as Pearson noticed both in the finals last year; Jacques apparently already has an offer of some sort from NMU- his dad has a suite at MTU (Center Ice S & S).

A 4 point game for Johnson yesterday (2-G, 2-A). 12 points in his last 6 games. They won't have him for 3 years if he can keep scoring. Sounds like he is seeing a ton of ice time. PP and PK too.

Also, did hear Storm is on the radar. Not sure moving to forward is a smart move. Lot more chance of making the cut at D. Unless they are telling him to move to forward but I can't see it?

Jacques is a very nice player; it will be interesting to see how he progresses. Should get a ton of ice time with Johnson gone.

Chris Leibinger spent the weekend on a "call up" to Muskegon. In two games, he had four shots on goal and finished with a combined even +/- rating in a pair of 6-2 and 4-1 losses.

I heard that Storm was moved back to D when Erkkila decided to play.
I'm a little sad that the Cal/Cranbrook series conflicts with the Tech/UMD series this weekend. Can't be in every rink at once.

Re: Michigan Tech 2011-12 Season Thread, Part II: You're gonna need a bigger bandwago

I have been thinking about what it will take for Tech to get home ice. I figure, with fade's help, that 28 points is what will be needed. So if that is the bar it is quite attainable. However we have to get some points out of these next two weekends. No points will make home ice tough to get, unless we think we can win at UND or CC.

I think the tough one will be the gophers in the twin cities.... I think we get at least 2 from UMD at home.

I think that 28 points is a reasonable number to need if you expect home ice. You also have to hope for the league to be fairly even top to bottom if you can't get 28 pts. When the bottom three or four teams suck, it takes more points to get home ice because the teams at the bottom are not winning their share of points. If we look back the last ten years, only once was a team able to obtain home ice with less then 28 league points. The 2001-02 the Badgers finished 5th with 27 points, but is should be noted that 6th, 7th and 8th place all had 24 points each putting a lot of points in the bottom half of the standings, thus requiring less to secure home ice. It seems logical that on average you have to earn 50% or more of the available points to finish in the top half.

In fact the highest total ever required to secure home ice would have been 30pts in 2002-03 when the 6th place team finished with 29. (The 5th place team had 32.)

Season / Pts for last team to secure home ice / Pts for highest placing road.
(Note this is 5th / 6th place until last season when it became 6th / 7th, but there were always a possible 56 points)
2010-11 / 28 / 27
2009-10 / 33 / 27
2008-09 / 29 / 28
2007-08 / 28 / 27
2006-07 / 29 / 27 *
2005-06 / 32 / 28
2004-05 / 29 / 26
2003-04 / 31 / 28
2002-03 / 32 / 29
2001-02 / 27 / 24
* MTU was 6th place this season.

In the Muskegon/Green Bay game, MTU had three recruits playing. Eick and Heinonen both scored.

nine WCHA series left. 18 games. possible 36 points on the table. currently at 11. 17 points needed to reach magic 28 number.

can someone with a Tech degree check the math?

Splits all the way, minimum.

18 games left, 17 points needed. Win 9 games, you get 18 points.

And I didn't even need a degree, much less a Tech one. :p

More to the point, after the next two series, 14 games left. Without any points that means needing almost 3 points every series thereafter. A stretch for sure. Splits are a near necessity for these series if we are talking home ice.

The factor that may lower the bar is that UM and UMD are playing really well and the bottom teams are strong enough to play with the top half this year. We may see a couple of teams at the top getting a lot of points, parity at the bottom and as a result, maybe 25 or 26 points gets home ice with a bunch of teams sitting int he low 20s.

There is an artical about Josh Robinson on the USCHO homepage. I don't have a link, because if you can't find the USCHO homepage, you have bigger problems.

They really need to get a new photo for Robinson.

This.

Nice article though.

And for all we know, it may take 30+ points to secure home ice this year; it has in the recent past. I wouldn't worry too much about it just yet - they need to concentrate on consistency and bringing their best game every night.

you are probably right, however to tell the truth I've been looking at potential match-up's. It would benefit us greatly if we get one of these big ice teams in Houghton instead of their place, and it will be difficult to get even a split at CC or At UND so that makes it even harder.Course who knows, Tech will be a better team after the new year.
I agree on the photo. I don't see his face very well at all. Maybe he should take off the mask.
