Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Forgot to post after last game, so here it is.

As much as I don't want to have to compare us to really good high schoolers in an exhibition game, I'm going to because we hadn't fared too well against those same high schoolers the past couple years. First period seemed like a weak scrimmage, no one really trying. Once the second period started it was more competitive and we actually took control, which was nice to see. Hopefully we can carry that into this weekend against PSU.

On Matt Berry's return to the team
http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/...ey/2015/01/13/msu-hockey-matt-berry/21709403/

It will be great if Berry can get back to full participation soon.

Anastos: "I'm going to position it this way — Matt was not meeting certain obligations that we felt every player on our team needs to meet," Anastos said. "I gave him time — I didn't give him time, I forced him — to go reassess life as a Spartan hockey player and the commitments that are necessary to be part of it. And he's done that."

Complete speculation, but you have to wonder if it was grades or attendance. No word from any source the entire month +, and nothing on the police blotter.

Regardless, this team can get a huge boost from his return, if he does return to the ice. As the article mentions, we won't see him in the Penn State weekend coming up.

Yeesh, sounds rough. But, it also sounds like he will return fairly soon. Perhaps something happened after the Minnesota game.

You may be onto something; that was cause for celebration - if you're talking about the second game ;)

I had a dream last night that I forgot about the game and on Saturday morning saw that we had lost 8-3. Luckily, I don't believe in any such dream future nonsense.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

I've done that couple times. Like ten years ago we played at Duke in basketball and were down by 10 when I decided to go to bed. Had a dream that I woke up and checked the TV and we had won by 2. Actually woke up and figured what I had dreamed was real so when I went to school I was pretty confused when everyone was talking about it.

Another one was a couple years ago when Tech had that huge losing stream. For some reason I had a dream about them playing Minnesota Duluth. They went up 4-0 in the 2nd period but Duluth came back to win 5-4 to keep the losing streak going. In real life the games weren't that close.

I'm interested to see these alternates that PSU keeps talking about. One of the previews showed part of Penn State, which if I had to guess means they're doing a look based off the club jerseys they had before moving to varsity.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

I'm hoping to not have a dream that Matt Berry netted like 24 goals the remainder of the B1G schedule and MSU suddenly found itself the #1 seed going into the tournament at JLA. Because my dreams usually aren't very prophetic.

If I get my wish, then Berry will net something like 24 goals etc. etc.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Not from a dream, but here are my predictions for this weekend.

Friday:
MSU 2
PSU 2
MSU SO win

Saturday
MSU 3
PSU 1

This team has seemed to have turned a corner since the Berry suspension/hold out/benching/whatever Anastos is doing. PSU is much improved from year's prior but I like what I've seen these past five or so games.

I need to start finding a college hockey bookie. It only works if I post it here first though, both my GLI guesses were off by a couple goals.

I will do my part. Resist posting a prediction until Spartanforlife4 gets his in.

I just meant posting it here on the board before the game starts, not that I had to be the first one to make any predictions.

Regardless, I was somehow able to watch the game on BTNPlus last night without paying. We looked good, though probably should've lost because Hildy stood on his head a few times. On the flip side we missed a couple easy ones where half the net was open so we had our missed chances too. I think Saturday has been our good day most of the season, so I hope we can put out a good effort today. Buccigross will be in the house on ESPNU.

Dang - I didn't know to try the BTNPlus. All through the game though I keep hearing the radio guys talk about Hildy needing to be ready, because PSU's prepared the fire the puck on him as soon as they cross the blue line. (I sorta like that idea, except when on the power play) but it sounded like that's why you had the 50 shots on net they delivered. Seemed that moving Haag up to the top line along with Cox and Ferrantino worked well.

So MSU got one challenge of what was called a goal on the ice upheld, while they got another challenge of what was called no goal go their way as well. There also seemed to be a couple penalties that could have been easily called against PSU not get called.

Why doesn't Minney from the NTDP get any action in net this year?

Hildebrand has been playing great. I am surprised he hasn't made a couple spot starts, but really, Hildebrand gives us the best chance to win night in and night out.

Disappointed with last night's game. We were playing great through the first two periods and then the floodgates opened. Oh well. Ohio State is beatable, would be very helpful to sweep next week.

Unless its a matter of keeping Minney's eligibility for as long as possible. Minney as we've seen can obviously step in on any night.

Up 2-1, State had numerous opportunities to get that crucial third goal and other chances to extend the lead or keep the game close. Not cashing in near the end of the 2nd 5-on-5 when they had PSU on its heels, or power play at the end of the second was huge. Honestly thought they could go into intermission tied and take the momentum back. Gave the home team a chance to regroup with a 3-2 lead and they just took the game over. Turnovers were just brutal.

Does FSD contract out their production? There's currently a MobileTV truck sitting outside Munn.

Evidently jerseys for the Chicago game will be unveiled tonight. If it goes along with Michigan's look it'll be something retro. I'm hoping for those jerseys from the Anastos era with the tiny USC-like logo on the front.

Fox Detroit rents production trucks, they don't have their own for every show they do.

And I think you're under the impression that Anastos is older than he actually is. The jersey you're talking about was an Amo Bessone era sweater - Anastos never wore anything but the script Michigan State look. The whites that were just before that were a block print in capital letters.

I would hope they're going to use the classic 1960's look. http://www.msublueline.org/bessone3b.jpg

You're right. Anastos tweeted a throwback Thursday pic a few weeks ago and I just figured it was him, didn't pay too close of attention. Now I realize it was Tom Ross.

I'm actually surprised we haven't come out with a version of these for this season, with it being the 40th anniversary of Munn and all.

Hockey Classic Jerseys

Essentially the football pro combats with sleeves. I like 'em. Certainly not as good as the scripts, but still good.

The OSU fans were saying in their thread that they don't play defense. They were right. If you count post shots, plus the wide open net shots we missed, plus the most frustrating stop ever when it was a foot away and simply got overpowered by a stick, that game is 8-2 or 9-2. I think that might've been a top 3 game of the year. Puck possession was strong, we stayed physical with them, and it didn't really seem that even on shots. Big crowd tonight too. A lot was due to MSUFCU but I'm thinking some locals pick up tickets for tomorrow after tonight's showing.

Now we'll see if this team can do the unthinkable tomorrow.
