Michigan State 2009-2010

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

While on the Miller subject, I understand he and Justin Abdelkader will be signing autographs somewhere on the concourse sometime before the MSU/MTU game next Tuesday. Whether they are in Red Wings sweaters or Green&White is unknown. Details (presumably) to follow.

I recieved an e-mail from Olympia Entertainment, They will be signing autographs from 3-4 on Tuesday. Plus $1 ice cream sandwiches and popcorn!!

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

9 different scorers, 4 get their first of the year, 2 of them rarely play (perlini deserves to), and 2 get their 1st career tallies. yeah booeeey

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Another step towards redemption with that GLI win. Sure, the competition may not have been as stiff as previous victories but it's hard to argue with outscoring opponents 16-2 on the weekend.

Funny how right after Comley has personal 1 on 1 meetings with players to discuss things including trying to achieve more scoring depth, we probably couldn't have spread the scoring around any more than we did. Hopefully that jump starts an offense that besides Mr. Tropp, has been otherwise anemic since Notre Dame

Can't stumble against those snot-nosed brats on the U18 team this monday. Gotta take it to them and keep the momentum going for LSSU.

I know it will be a fruitless hope but maybe there is finally the buzz to start bringing in 5500+ in Munn. I doubt it will happen but you can always hope until the puck drops.

$5 per ticket might help. It will be interesting to see Austin Czarnik on our ice for the first time. He's second on the U18 team in assists.

A good week so far for former Spartans too (if you don't count JM Liles). Ryan Miller's on the Olympic team. :)

With the students out of town, and seeing that I doubt Lake State will bring a ton of fans down from the Sault, we'll probably struggle to draw 4,000 next weekend. We might get 2,000 for Monday.

All that said, we'll probably get 6,000+ for Notre Dame and sell out for Michigan. Beyond that? Let's just say that I fear the future.

It'd be nice if we could actually beat the NTDP for once. What are we, 2-4 or 3-3 in our last six against them?

Hmm is he still coming here? If he is even on the fence, i doubt monday's turnout will make a good impression.

Odds are greatly stacked in favor of "no". In fact, despite rumours swirling about his eventual flight to U-M (mainly started by pie-in-the-sky bloggers) - he's not the least bit interested in academics (trolls insert something about "fitting right in here") ... just being the next Sid Crosby in miniature.

Well I am canceling my All Access too. Now, please help a poor fella out and give me a link to the BTN access. I tried to find it tonight but was unable to. (This after I got a response from All Access that the reason I couldn't connect was that they weren't carrying it... bastads...)

Clem who? :p

http://video.bigtennetwork.com/

When I called in, they told me the BTN was carrying the game and that was why they didn't broadcast live. While on the phone, I tuned to the BTN and found that they were broadcasting wrestling, not hockey. I then told them that the BTN was charging additional money for live streaming of the game that I already paid them to watch. With that info they finally refunded my money. (This happened in the past with the UNO games and the Minnesota game too, but they claimed to not known why at the time.)

Some of us prefer to believe that $5 tickets and $1 brats - plus positive buzz from the tournament - will bring people out on Monday. The only thing that might keep people home is wanting to stay out of the cold. Given a choice, I prefer to remain positive.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Yes, it's NTDP U-18. No, Jack Campbell's not in goal.

Still, don't tell me 8 goals wasn't fun to watch, or wasn't important. Just want to keep the 'O' rolling into next weekend.

We got in A.J. Sturges, Joey Shean and Justin Johnston. Gave Petry (flu) and Rowe (high ankle sprain) the night off.
Also, Kyle McMahon saw some time in net at the end. Really satisfying night.

FYI - Austin Czarnik's got some skill - but Fallon is a BEAST.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Well tonight was interesting...

1. It was dollar brat night and I left my cash in the car! This is exactly where there needs to be an ATM at Munn!

2. Coach Comley was not behind the bench tonight. I did not see him in the press box either. I know he is often recruiting monday and tuesday, so I am not entirely shocked.

3. Nearly all of the healthy roster players dressed. It was nice seeing AJ Sturges toss his body around!

4. Petry and Rowe were noticably out of the lineup. I hope they were healthy scratches.

Those are my observations for the evening...if anyone else was part of the crowd of dozens, please join in!

Glad you made it up for the game.
Comley is out of town due to death in family. No radio show tomorrow either for same reason.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

since i haven't seen the score posted on uscho.com yet, here's the game report from MSU:

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State got a pair of goals and an assist from Daultan Leveille and a goal and assist each from Corey Tropp and Derek Grant as the Spartans posted an 8-2 exhibition victory over the US National Team Development Program Under-18 squad on Monday night at Munn Ice Arena. MSU again had a balanced scoring attack, with seven different goal scorers.

The Spartans held a 3-0 lead at the end of the first with goals by Brock Shelgren, Leveille, and Brett Perlini. Team USA got one back from Luke Moffatt early in the second period before the Spartans re-asserted themselves with goals from Nick Sucharski and Mike Merrifield.

Top liner Brandon Saad stuffed back his own rebound at the 13:43 mark of the second, but Grant's pretty goal late in the frame gave MSU a 6-2 lead headed into the final period.

The Spartans got third-period markers from Tropp and Leveille for the final 8-2 margin.

Bobby Jarosz got the start for MSU, and made 21 saves before making way for backup Kyle McMahon, who made three saves in the balance of the game.

I noted 2 & 4 myself. Anyone else with more info on either of them? I know Rowe was a little dinged going into the GLI.

What was the deal with McMahon? The players were going crazy over him playing. Is there more to the story there? I got a kick out of watching him. Very different style. Personally, I'd call it ADHD. Very busy legs and arms. Quick aggressive movements. I wish he had gotten a bit more time!

Rowe has a high-ankle sprain and Jeff Petry is being kept far away from the team. We don't want that flu going through the team like it did 3 years ago

According to a reliable source, Coach's father-in-law passed away in his sleep overnight. It was not expected. He will not be around tomorrow either, but it's unclear whether there will simply be no radio show or whether someone else will step in.

As for McMahon, I think it's just the team was happy to see him get some time. Personally, I thought he could have played the entire third period and nothing would have changed. He handled himself very well out there :)

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

I am convinced after having Dominic Vicari and Jeff Lerg, Coach Comley has given up on any goaltenders over 5'7"!ThatMcMahon kid was fun to watch. I know hell will freeze over before we seehim again, but he looked very confident. The first shot he faced came off a block in front and he had to sprawl across the net in very Lerg-like style.

I am pleased as punch at the way this team has not only been able to find the net lately, but from anyone that is willing to contribute. I know it has been a while since we have faced a real quality opponant, but that opportunity is coming up over the next 2 weekends.

I was very pleased to see how often the forwards used the defensemen on the points in the offensive zone. It seemed like we had a lot more flow in the offensive zone, and yet did not sacrifice quality shot opportunities. I also loved the combination of Butterty and Krug on the blueline. They compliment each other perfectly on both ends of the ice.

Also nice to see defensemen take some well-timed, well-directed shots (Shelgren and Josepher can really drive the puck) and go in deep when opportunities present themselves. I also thought on Monday Sturges and Johnston played like they could step in when called on.

I hope Petry is well and ready to go this Friday. Saturday will conclude a stretch of 5 games played over 12 days. Whew!

--------
Well the accolades keep rolling in. Corey Tropp got Player of the Month for December, and Torey Krug picked up Rookie of the Month. (Derek Grant already has one :))

Ricardo Cooney: A few things you should know about this team

Ricardo Cooney: A few things you should know about this team

Ricardo Cooney may be as close to the hockey program as any media type we have. Here's his take:

First and foremost, these guys are bothers in arms. To a man, they've all said at one time or another this season that they were not going to have last year be what they were remembered for when they left MSU. The committment has been phenomenol. They have bonded incredibly fast and the closeness is very genuine.

They are constantly together, they share meals together, they share down time together and the feel in the lockerroom, as captain Nick Sucharski told me, is so much better than last year. Even something as simple as watching the World Juniors. This year, they watched the U.S.-Canada title game in two separate groups. Last year, they would have split up and watched the game in 5 or 6 different groups.

And it's not just by class. Whereas, upperclassmen tended to stay with upperclassmen last season and last year's freshmen were kind of on their own, these guys all hang with each other in all different situations.

There's a lot you can glean from a team's chemistry and closeness and this team has it.

The best example I can give you is in late October after a practice, Comley was set to meet with his coaches and discuss some aspects of the team. That meeting was supposed to take place in his office about 30 minutes after practice. When the assistants didn't show up for nearly an hour, Comley grabbed a cup of coffee and went looking for his staff. He found them still on the ice with most of guys, still wanting to work on aspects of their game. The team was supposed to be off the ice by 3 p.m. that day and didn't all actually leave until about 5 p.m. Those are the kinds of things that tell me everything I need to know about a team.

Secondly, the offseason was crucial in a lot of ways and in the 'you can actually teach an old dog new tricks' category, Comley gets an A-plus.
First he actively brought older, more mature players, who were already ahead of the curve physically.

Four of the freshmen have turned 21 in the last five months, meaning they are ahead of the game in emotional and mental maturity and physical maturity.

Also, as somebody noticed in an earlier thread, MSU runs the Red Wings system. Over the summer, Comley got the former video guy, who now works for the Wings to send him tapes of the Wings offensive and defensive strategies and incorporated them into this year's Spartan team.

And their offseason training program was about as intense as it could be at any university level.

All of last year's freshmen, who were weak on their skates, gained muscle, lost baby fat and strengthened their bodies and minds to become mentally tougher. Everybody stayed and got stronger together. That didn't happen with last year's team.

Give trainer Mike Vorkapich all of the credit here. He did a phenomenol job with these guys, making them get up for 6 a.m. workouts, with a lot of those days being two-a-day sessions.

In all honesty, I thought this team would be much better than last year's after looking at what they had coming in, who they had returning and the improvements I knew those returning would bring to the overall makeup but I can honestly say, I didn't think they would be this good.
In many ways, they have exceeded expectations.

Now, the real test comes because they will not be able to sneak up on anybody anymore and are now in the category of being the hunted during many of these next seven weekends.

One thing that should really work in their favor down the stretch is the fact that they will have a weekend off after getting back from Alaska.
Players in the past have commented about how hard it is to get back mentally after that trip, with some admitting it's taken an entire week. The fact that MSU will not have to prepare for any games after returning should give them more than enough time to recharge and close it out strong.

Lastly, I would like to commend all of those who had the guts to get on here at different times and amend their criticisms of Comley and the program.

For long time and diehard fans last year was sickening and I can understand your frustrations but I knew it was just one of those bad years that happens every now and then. Comley's been in the game way too long to lose it that quickly.

By the way, many of the things MSU went through last season, are happening in Ann Arbor and unless something really special happens, I don't see the Wolves making the NCAA tourney.
